Great introduction to what you need to know to do appropriate e-collar training. It was a very helpful tool for me!
Really good information on training your dog with the e-collar. The book doesn't have a lot of pages, but it does present a lot of information in a short, compact format. I highly recommend it for anyone considering the use of the e-collar.
If you follow the instructions this color works great depending on the dog it works very quickly. We have a pitbull and a stubborn as she is she gives into the Collar quickly without having to use the electrodes! The instructions in this book are perfect for the collar we purchased.
The collar needs charging often as the only negative. The rest is very good with good instructions.

I found this book in the #WeNeedDiverseBooks catalog on Scholastic Book Clubs, which is my favorite place to shop for my classroom. This book appealed to me because it was a graphic novel, and because of its premise in examining gender norms.Aster is a boy who lives in a magical society where the girls are trained to be witches, and the boys are supposed to grow to be shapeshifters. Aster's shapeshifting magic hasn't come to him, and he's really much more interested in witchery. At one part of the story, he points out to the other boys that it's silly that the girls are in lessons learning things while they are just running around playing fighting games. As a teacher, this made me smile! His family then runs into a mysterious danger, and no one will listen to him when he thinks he has a way to help make things right. Will he be able to use magic his way to help save his family?This book features a diverse cast, which is readily apparent to the reader thanks to the graphic novel format. Aster is a likable protagonist, as is his friend Charlie. I love the message that shatters the binary gender norms, especially because they are sometimes quite rigid in this age group. When I listed the books I had bought to my students this last year, some of them questioned me on how the title could be "The Witch Boy." Even in the world of fantasy, they had clear gender norms established in their head. I am all for books that can help loosen those norms and create more open minds. There is no reason for our children to feel like there are things that they cannot do or be because they have been assigned a certain gender. Because of its fantasy setting, I feel like it's a book that can be more readily accepted by readers and gatekeepers with more conservative views. This kind of representation is very important for our children who are coming of age and discovering themselves.Because it's a middle grade novel, the plot of THE WITCH BOY moved very quickly and I would have loved more details about the characters and the world. However, I think it'll be more than enough to keep kids engaged, and the story line is easy to follow. It's a quick read, which is a huge plus for some of our reluctant readers, and my students were definitely attracted to the full color, high-quality pages. This was the nicest looking book in the book order that it came in, and one of my students must have liked it enough to keep it, because it never made it back and I had to order a new one on Amazon.
cute story and great art.I like it just fine.Although it does do a bit of a too heavy handed "parents never understand thing".which is a part of the thing's theme. I get that. Still though, having a secret family of magic peeps being staunch gender conformity supporters doesn't make sense. Witches have an extensive history of cross gender stuff.There are a few not so great magic rules that the book doesn't really answer but I can't expect it to.It's a very short story and doesn't have time to answer my quibbles.It's a delightful read, but it does have flaws. I'd give an average book 3 or 4 stars. but seeing as how important this sort of story is I'm giving it the full 5. It is creative enough to deserve it and the majority of the metaphors and representation are treated very well and understandable through a child's eyes.I look forward to the prospect of reading this story to my kids.
We got this book when it first came out. I forgot to review it.My then 6yo loved it. He read the ending over and over. He really identified with Aster and Charlie, both kids who maybe don't quite fit in how they were expected to.I read it as soon as it arrived in the mail. I was afraid it might be too intense for my 6yo at the time (an advanced reader) and i worried it might deal with subjects that felt a bit raw for him, but I left it lying around, hadn't decided what to do, and he just read it as soon as he saw it. It *was* intense but ultimately he loved it. My other kid didn't read it until the day the sequel came out and then he read it several more times in the days to follow.I read recommend this graphic novel, but especially if you have a kid who due to interests or gender expression or anything else feels like they don't fit right in their communities.
I had high hopes for this book, maybe too high.First off, the pictures are GORGEOUS. I love the style of drawing used here. The world building is pretty cool too. I loved the main character. He's sweet but still thinks about his own needs, and is naive but in a way that's appropriate for his age.However, the plot is lacking. The "surprise villain" is pretty much the most obvious "twist" you could have come up with. Literally the exposition in the first SCENE spells it out for you. The side plot, a friendship with a non-magic girl, is a cool idea. She has a broken leg, and she doesn't want to tell the protagonist what happened. They make it out to be this big suspenseful secret so I was thinking abuse? assault? bullying? But no. (spoilers if you care) but some kids were teasing her so she dared them to make a jump with their bikes and she did it first and fell. I understand they're supposed to be middle school aged and this could seem embarrassing but I mean?Also the metaphors get pretty annoying as a teen reader. I understand that for children this could help them understand complex issues around sexuality and gender, but I mean we get it.All in all, I'm not disappointed I read it. I think it had some great qualities, but it just wasn't for me.
This book was amazing! I loved the designs and the overall art style. The story was well written and I feel like many kids out there can relate to Aster and Charlie, being someone who doesn't fit society's picture of what they should be. I loved how Aster was able to be his true self and even though his parents don't quite understand 100% they still love and accept him for who he is. Would definitely recommend to others and I can't wait to read more from this author.
Amazing graphic novel. I love the art and the writing! I pre-purchased the hardcover edition of The Witch Boy because I have read the author's webcomic Strong Female Protagonist. The book itself is extremely well made. The binding is firm and the pages turn well. The characters are warm, charming, and well written. After reading this book with my two boys, I plan on donating it to their elementary school library.

The Kaplan Catholic High School Entrance Exam review book is an excellent tool to use in preparing for the HSPT. The book provides excellent descriptions of general strategies to use on each section of the test, rather than providing detailed subject matter content that is covered on the test. If you want a book that is going to teach your student algebra, then don't buy this book. If you want a tool to teach your student strategies that will improve their score on the test, this book is your best bet.
I've taught TACHS review class for over ten years. This is the only book I've used. The practice exams are better than those in any other TACHS review books.
I recommend this book very highly. My son used it to prepare for the High School Placement Test. It helped him to refresh his memory on some topics, he used the strategies to know how to approach the test, and the practice tests were really helpful. As a result, he scored higher on a couple of areas than he ever has on a standardized test! Well worth the money!
Daughter prepped using only this book, and received a 99% on the HSPT! Would highly recommend.

These stories are interconnected by a core set of characters who don't get anywhere by mainstream standards, but don't get overwhelmed by their lack of success because they didn't expect much to begin with. This leaves the reader with an uneasy sense of optimism that arises from the narrative's suspension of conventional norms about how to communicate or interact with others. Couldn't anything be possible when there are no apparent guidelines about how to live a life? Even some of the supernatural happenings described begin to seem plausible, given the author's gift of seamlessly blending tangible and spiritual elements into his storytelling. The always dysfunctional, often disturbing and sometimes hilariously funny behavior described drives home what growing up Indian in contemporary American society might feel like. At the same time, I can't help drawing a few parallels between growing up half a century ago in a frequently inebriated Irish family. Great storytelling would seem to be a universal refuge from chaos on the home front no matter what cultural crucible defines you.

Alexie is a wonderful writer - at once provocative and hilarious. I read this book several times when I first got my hands on it (it was one of a dozen or so books in English at the local library when I was living abroad) and have since shared it with many friends.I even bought a copy for my somewhat racist and homophobic father, hoping to expose him to a culture of which he knows little, and he too fell in love with the characters and their stories.
Alexie is the writer we all wish we could be. Once you put this book down you'll feel lonely, wistful, wrenched apart, and healed. The only answer will be to check out "Smoke Signals," the movie based on this beautiful horror, and Love Medicine, a slightly older work similar in its frenetic, harmonious yoga pretzels that leave you feeling tranquil. In this 20th anniversary edition the stories of Sherman Alexie ring ever as personal, lyrical and insightful as they did two decades ago. Having grown up just next door to the setting of these tales in Pend Oreille County, the scenes and city were as clear in my mind as ever. What was new when I first read it and again in reading this edition, was the peak into a very real and enduringly dynamic Native American culture. What Alexie is able to do in these context of these stories is open the reader up to the complex personhood behind the stereotypes; behind the rhetoric. I remember reading this as a young man in High School and how, even then, Thomas Builds-the-Fire spoke to me. Alexie acknowledges more readily now the autobiographical nature of these stories in many ways and it is in him we see not just Vincent but Thomas. Thomas was the modern day historian and wise man of the tribe though no one was willing to see it. He spoke the stories and words that needed to be spoken and needed to be heard both inside and outside of the reservation. Alexie does that as well, in this and in other books, capturing snapshots that speak to the humanity of history and its inherent subjectivity. This is what storytelling should be, telling us what we need to know that we had not realized and were even perhaps intent on avoiding. Things will never be what they were for any culture prior to expansionism, but hey, there is always a rising basketball star to put our hopes in. Worth getting the Anniversary Edition just for the final two additional stories.
This is an early collection of related stories from the author of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." The stories interconnect, and together paint a picture of growing up on the reservation is Eastern Washington State. Unlike in his novels, there isn't any clean conclusion to this collection, but rather a portrait of how life is, and I think maybe how life is for a lot of people, some of whom aren't Indians at all. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes ugly; good vs bad. The road to destruction and yet a life of dreams where "imagination" takes you to places unknown. I feel that the author does not expect everyone to react well to this book as it is very vivid ! As he says "the pressure of straddling two worlds.
I was inspired to read this after seeing the film "Smoke Signals." I found the collection of short stories enjoyable and accessible. In an age when many people substitute politics as a pseudo religion, using stories as a form of veiled ideological evangelism, Alexie sticks to telling us stories of those he's known and grown up with. No "Indian spiritual and good/white man money-lover and bad" stereotypical dynamic here; just interesting stories of people in a different and complex American culture. On a personal note, when the stories were somewhat 'trip' and surrealistic, I didn't enjoy them as much. But that's just a matter of taste. The majority of these were right up my alley, and a good, solid bout of my kind of storytelling.

We see her grow from a young girl who spends her happiest days playing and exploring the world around her with her friends and helping her mother with her younger sister. Her closest friends "jumping Fish" (her brother) and "Falcon" are her constant companions as they grow up day by day from children with not a care in the world, to young adults facing the world around them. Her relationship with Falcon changes as they grow older as well.From friendship grows love and they vow to be married one day when the time is right and Falcon has proven himself to be a man and worthy of marriage. To the three of them, life cannot be better, their threesome will stay close with the marriage and they will not have to part. Falcon prepares for his first hunt and with his return, plans to ask for Echo in marriage, a plan that seems perfect to all three of them.All seems happy and carefree for Echo until the day she happens to be in a place where a child falls from a high mesa and she catches it nimbly in her outstretched arms. From that day forward, her life changes in ways that she never dreamed possible....and all because she saved the life of this one child. For the child she saved is a child who belongs to the priest's and their group who live high on the mesa. And with the news of her heroic action a priest asks for her hand in marriage.Echo is crushed but knows that to ask for her hand is a compliment to her family and she cannot even think of refusing. So she is swept up into a marriage to a man she has no love for and who is not interested in her for a typical wife, but for someone who will be kind to him and help him as he grows older. She agrees to the marriage with the stipulation that he will teach her all his secrets of the priesthood and train her as he would a man. Her husband sees the wisdom in such a request and grants it thus beginning her studies as a student of the mysterious ways of their people.As the book continues, we see the tribe growing more and more aware that in order to survive, they must move on. For they have used up most of the natural resources of the area and as they years go by, it is harder and harder for them to prepare for the winters that lie ahead. Sadly they realize the futility of staying and one by one they move on leaving those who are too sick or old to stay and die where they lived. Echo stays behind caring for and burying those who die, as she feels she must do for her tribe. Her husband grows more ill as the days go by until he too passes on and Echo is left to bury her husband by herself. It is Echo's footsteps that are then the last to leave the mesa and all the memories it held for her people.After reading this, I found myself thoughtful, wondering if in fact this could have happened to the people of Chimney rock. I wondered if perhaps they, like the people in this book, slowly realized that though they had a wonderful city built on the mesa, that it no longer met their needs, and beautiful or not, they must move on to survive. I would highly recommend this book for young readers of all ages. It is filled with thoughtful moments, historical references to the lifestyle of Echo and her people and realistic characters as well. It is a book rich with meaning and thought provoking situations. This book is one that would make an excellent addition to any home or classroom library and one that is well worth the price. It is a wonderful way to look at the life of Native Americans and to see all aspects of their life in an easy to read and understandable manner. I bought this book as a supplemental/optional text book for a CBT course. It turned out to be the best of the three books assigned - more useful and practical than the other two required texts. It is well-laid out, with chapters organized by disorder, very easy to read, and full of practical examples.
This book is hard reading in the way all the headings continue throughout the text. But, If you persist, there are real nuggets for those of us who are experienced therapists. I don't know how helpful it would be for novices, who may need some further explanations.
I am about to start a CBT training course and the book was recommended by a friend who has previously completed the course. Inital reading has been informative and I hope it will become a working handtool in my practice
