FRED A. WILCOX is a veteran’s advocate, environmentalist, and scholar of the Vietnam War. His book, Waiting for an Army to Die: The Tragedy of Agent Orange, helped break the story of the effects of chemical warfare on US veterans who had served in Vietnam. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his scholarship, including the Chapel of the Four Chaplains Humanitarian Award, which was presented to him on two occasions by the Vientma Veterans of America. This book should be read only if you have an extremely strong and healthy heart and stomach.For Fred Wilcox spares nothing and no one in telling and describing one of the most horrible episodes in the annals of human history, namely that of Agent Orange and the terrible crimes which were committed and perpetrated by the policy makers during the Vietnam war on the Vietnamese people.In fact, I believe that this book is the first one that gives the reader a comprehensivesurvey and analysis of those shocking times when Agent Orange was dropped on Vietnam, causing devastation, death, cancer, deformities, birth defects and many more horrendous inflictions on the Vietnamese people.As Fred Wilcox lets us know, this book has been in the making for more than ten years, during which he and his son Brandon traveled to Vietnam in order to meet the survivors, talk to the doctors and victims or their families and take pictures that would document this war crime for posterity.Agent Orange was a herbicide so named after the orange stripe painted around the 55-gallon barrels in which it was stored. This agent of death was contaminated with dioxin, a powerful carcinogenic, and whose spread over the North Vietnam fields, forests and jungles got the blessing of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. True, this was not the first time that such a biological war was ever perpetrated in human history. There are many more examples, as they are documented by the author. Hoever, this was the first time in human history that such a crime was committed over a whole country where the victims were not only the soldiers and the civilians of the enemy, but also the American soldiers who later became the veterans of the Vietnam war. This originally-designed defoliation program became the death program for both sides of the conflict. Nothing and nobody was spared. Mr Wicox interviewed doctors and patients and also the American veterans, many of whom were-and are still-suffering from the results of their own country's decisions. Their tragedy was that to this day the crime of this act was not resolved, since the American judge who two decades before lead the trial concerning the case dismissed it on legal grounds. The reason for this, as Judge Weinstein explained, was that there was no scientific evidence to support the plaintiffs' claims that "the Vietnamese people are sick and dying as a result of their exposure to toxic herbicides. In short there was no causation". Then in another paragraph, the same judge argues that "the United States did not use herbicides in Vietnam with specific intent to destroy any group. Nor were those herbicides designed to harm individuals or to starve a whole population into submission or death. The herbicides were primarily applied to plants in order to protect troops against ambush, not to destroy people".This argument is of course a judicial farce and the American victims plus their families are still being compensated for a variety of illnesses related to their exposure to Agent Orange. Even the Supreme Courst refuses to deal with this case. "Why bother to hear arguments in a case when it has already been established, time and again, that there are no veifiable victims?"This book shatters every possible judicial argument which dismisses the responsibility of the American presidencies of this war crime and crime against humanity and will serve as a constant reminder of the evil side not only of the human psyche but especially of the judicial side which has probably lost its capability in reaching a reasonable decision.This book merits to be on everyone's shelf!

Has the right amount of information to keep me interested. I would recommend reading "Waiting for an army to die" before this. This book cover victims of agent orange from both side. It also shows the long aftermath of Operation Ranch Hand and the sufferings of Vietnamese Agent Orange victims. Putting the verdicts of class actions aside, the American government should spend more effort in helping the Vietnamese clean up the residue dioxin and prevent future generations of Vietnamese from the effects of dioxin.

This book reviews the USA policy of drenching Vietnam with Agent Orange, a policy first signed off by J.F.Kennedy. Vietnamese are still reeling from the effects of having millions of gallons of a defoliant poured over them, as are many members of the U.S. military. The makers assured the government that the defoliant was harmless to humans and animals, that dioxin was harmless. The corporations manufacturing this material and the lies that went with it should be held accountable and the US should pay the Vietnamese and American veterans millions in reparations. Do not purchase this book unless you have a strong stomach!

Brutal truth told finally.Hard to read the truth why my dad a disabled vet with Parkinson’s from agent orange is so sick. Couldn’t put down ,will make you cry if your a child of parent sick from agent orange exposure on Vietnam.

I wanted to read this book after hearing an interview with the author on NPR. The information in the book was shocking to me. I was in my 20's during the Viet Nam War. And yes, I knew we used napalm, and yes, I knew we used a "defoliant". What I didn't know was that NO ONE knew what the long-term effects of the spraying would be, no one, of course, except the chemical companies. I know the theories behind the blatant disregard of human life during war, but this was insidious and shameful. And how, so many decades later, can there still be denial about these effects? I know many people that float on the river "de nile", but this staggers the imagination.

Scorched Earth is a real compelling eye opener and informative read on the affects of spraying Agent Orange on the Vietnam people and our American Vietnam Veterans. I have watched my own brother struggle , suffer and fight for years from the effects of the spraying, and only recently has he been compensates for his suffering of Agent Orange by the VA Administration. I hope many people read this book, it will help you understand why so many Vietnam Veterans and there families struggle today, as well, what is happening to many generations of Vietnam people because of our government's spraying mistakes.

It is hard not to be outraged and deeply moved by the distressing results of US and Australian policies of destroying foliage and vegetation without due care and understanding. The suffering of many people, both US, Australian and Vietnamese, their children and grandchildren should haunt us forever.

A very important and highly readable account of the tragic legacy the U.S. left in Vietnam through the use of highly toxic defoliants.

I find myself using both 1st edition and 2nd edition rules when developing my new campaign here in late 2015. I am a big fan of the game and enjoyed playing it for years. I prefer the older game where the story made up more of the enjoyment and not the mechanics. In my opinion the current versions are too dependent on individual feats and actions and less invested in the group dynamics and long term campaign development. So I will stick with older rules. Second edition was a marked improvement over 1st edition in that it clarified and organized the rules for players. However, it also was the first step in removing some of the game aspects that I liked in first edition. So that’s why I blend them together and even add more of my house rules. This edition was written to cater to a larger audience compared to the first edition which seemed to focus on an older audience. Nothing wrong with that at all, but at times I prefer the simplicity of the older materials. I would definitely recommend this edition to new players if they wanted to play and had access to this stuff. Nothing wrong with any of them, but for me as an old school player I prefer them. Make of it what you will. This book has everything you need to begin playing right off the bat as long as someone else is the DM. That was always one thing that drove us nuts in the beginning. The 1st edition stuff had way too much player material in its Dungeon Master Guide compared to 2nd edition.

2e AD&D is, IMO, the best version of the game. It is very close to 1e, but with a great deal of improvements. It is closely compatible with all 1e supplements and adventures. The PHB is a fantastic resource, containing much more useful information on playing the game compared to the 1e version. Bought this for my daughter-in-law who is just learning to play. Wonderful to still be able to purchase a good copy of this veteran book, long OOP. Cheers!

I don't think he should of put Used-Very Good. Probably more like Used-Good. But it was mainly just the cover that was bad .So I don't if that's considered used "Very good" or what. Either the way the pages inside were perfect and no musty smell etc. Would def.order from him again.

Goes to show that what was good back in the day is still good today. The capstone of fantasy role-playing has never been more enjoyable and cleverly composed, and this book brings together all the dreams of individuals who reflect on the past and relish in old superstitions that arose from past periods where ignorance flourished and filled our ancestors' minds with visions of unseen demons and creatures lurking in the murk and mire of things yet to be discovered.

This is my favorite edition of d&d. Awesome book and it came in in good shape.

Where, oh where, to start? Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is a RPG in a league all it's own. When I first started playing RPGs I started with D&D 3rd edition and it was okay. I always felt that the rules in it were too much like a video game and put too many limits on my characters. Second edition is completely different. When AD&D was created it was during a time when you still needed to be creative to play a RPG. The rules are perfect for creating vast and wonderful characters. The game also keeps in mind that your DM is basically the boss. He decides what happens and where the party goes, it doesn't say you should put up with a jerk but you shouldn't be one either. This book is the Player's Handbook. It contains all the information and rules you need to create a character from the basic classes and races. It also explains the rules for combat, healing, equipment, magic spells, and everything else you need to play the game. It works best if you have the Dungeon Master's Handbook and Monstrous Manual with it.Though I love second edition I know that it's not for everyone. If you like playing things like Dungeons & Dragons but you like it feeling like Final Fantasy, where your character is set and you don't have to be creative, than you might as well stick to one of the newer editions. Second edition was made so you could be creative and interact with people. If you can't/don't wanna be creative and only want to go into dungeons and level up than play 4th edition. AD&D is for the creative elite in a way but I extremely suggest you give it a try and see how wonderful your campaigns can be in it. The freedom and realistic was the rules works will be sure to please.

My husband has been playing 2nd edition for the longest time. This book is great. We bought it to replace one that had been a bit too worn.

Smelled heavily of mold, or as if the book was kept in a dank basement for years. The condition was good enough though, all the pages are there, no stains or rips, just a horrible, rotten smell.

I have been doing special makeup effects for many, many years and have probably read most of the books on the subject. My first "book" was Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook. I read it until the pages were tattered and torn and the staples finally fell out.When I decided to order this book, I expected to get another run-of-the-mill makeup handbook that might have a tidbit of information I could use. Boy, was I wrong! The information contained in this book would take the average makeup artist many YEARS to learn! This is the kind of information that most makeup artists only get if they're lucky enough to work in a top notch special effects shop - and that's pretty much impossible nowadays.Todd offers easy to understand, step by step instructions along with pictures of the processes. Did I mention it comes with a DVD? That alone is worth the price of the book.Other things I think you should know is that Todd explains what you SHOULDN'T do, and describes why some things you expect to work - won't. There are simple tips and tricks described that I didn't know - even after well over 25 years of being a special makeup effects artist. Incredible.If you are a novice - this should be your #1 makeup bible. If you're a pro - this should be the "go-to" book in your library.I can't promote this book enough. You just have to buy it. The information in it is worth double or triple the price.Did I mention it comes with a DVD?In closing, let me give you an idea of how well this book is put together: my 4-year old granddaughter will sit for hours looking at the pictures! She will even take it to bed and have me explain the makeup process. When I'm in my studio making prosthetics, she will ask me if did this or did that, to make sure I haven't missed something. I have to laugh, but I also have to admit that Todd's book is so easy to read that a 4-year old can understand and remember!Buy the book. I promise, you won't regret it! It contains the latest materials and procedures used in the industry.I'm sure in a few years the pages of my book will also be tattered and torn and the binding beginning come apart from so much use.Did I mention it comes with a DVD?

I bought this book a little while ago and it probably is one of my best investments. This book covers everything that you would want to know and more. I'm just starting out as a special makeup effects artiest and this book has made my life 100X easier. I no longer need to guess on how to do something and get it after several different attempts I can just look it up in the book and use it as guide.The author of this book suggests to have the binding cut off and get it spiral bound so that it can lay flat while your working with it, so I did this but I had mine cut in half at chapter 6 and then spiral bound both of them now I can see two different chapters at the same time while working I highly suggest doing this with your book as well.Pros: Everything that you will learn from this book and all the tips it provides.Cons: There really are none.

I am a subscriber to Make-up Artist magazine and in their latest issue an article talked about the most valuable books for make-up artists to utilize and this was close to the top of the list. I already had a few of the other books so upon seeing this I purchased it and anxiously awaited its arrival. Talk about powerful presentation! My head was spinning from the load of info I received as it is a deluge of experiences filling every crevice of my mind and then some. If you ever feel like you want to up your game on make-up, seriously take this book into consideration and purchase it. You will not be disappointed!

About the Author

Steven Faulkner grew up in the Sudan and Ethiopia in Africa, and later in Arkansas and Kansas. After dropping out of college, he married, had children, and worked a variety of jobs: driving  dump trucks and concrete mixers, carpet cleaning, roofing, newspaper and doughnut delivery, and spent fourteen years as a carpenter.He returned to school and acquired the necessary degrees from the University of Kansas and now teaches Creative Writing at Longwood University in southern Virginia.His previous book Waterwalk: A Passage of Ghosts has been made into a movie starring Hollywood actor Robert Cicchini and has been released across the United States and Canada and is now available on DVD.  Faulkner has published essays in many literary journals and magazines including: North American Review, Fourth Genre, Southwest Review, Shenandoah Review, DoubleTake, and Wisconsin Trails Magazine. His work has been noted in Best American Essays and anthologized in Beacon’s Best.
