Amazon.com Review

Tibetan Buddhism has one of the most complex iconographies of any religion. Robert Beer, the artist who brought to life the saints of Tibetan Buddhism in Buddhist Masters of Enchantment, has now brought the myriad symbols of Tibetan Buddhist art to life. Not exactly arranged like an encyclopedia, this book is more like a tour of the categories of Tibetan Buddhist symbols, beginning with Landscape Elements (rocks, clouds, rainbows, etc.); moving on to such areas as Flowers and Trees, Cosmology, and Mudras (hand gestures); and ending with Geometric Borders. Exquisitely detailed line drawings (using fine-pointed traditional brushes) are grouped on full-size plates, each of which the author tells us took between 50 and 200 hours to draw. The eight years that went into this book are revealed not only in the drawings but also in the text that is equally detailed in its descriptions of the religious significance of the symbols as well as their sources and development in Tibetan art. Beer's encyclopedic knowledge has not come from book learning, but from 30 years of doing Tibetan art and learning firsthand from Tibetan masters. After glimpsing just of few of these plates, you'll be calling Beer a master too. --Brian Bruya

From Library Journal

Through 12 thematically organized chapters of text (accompanied by black-and-white line drawings), BeerAa British artist who's studied Tibetan thangka painting for 30 yearsAsets out to "cover the whole spectrum of Tibetan Buddhist symbols and attributes." Given the dearth of English-language works on the topic, libraries serving sophisticated interests in Tibetan Buddhism or Eastern art may want to add this work to their circulating collections. Its value as a reference title, however, is severely limited on several counts. First, Beer lacks credentials both in terms of traditional Western scholarship and Buddhist lineage of transmission. Additionally, the book contains no index or glossary; cross references are scarce; and terms unique to Tibetan Buddhism (like "concealed treasure" traditions) are not defined in the text.AJames R. I have been eyeballing this book for literally years now. It's been there seemingly forever, in my Wish List, always taunting me from afar, looking so tempting and beautiful. I just couldn't bring myself to spend the $75.00 that it cost. I was beginning to think it might never lower in price but it finally did! For now at least, but I hope it stays reduced so that others can enjoy it more easily as well.Fantastic book! I knew it would be. It is almost exactly what I expected it to be, although with more in-depth text than I anticipated. I knew it was lavishly illustrated with the author's original brush drawings, the talent of which I cannot fathom, but there's also a very good amount of text detailing the history, custom and usage of the various motifs, symbols and other art. Pages of detailed information, not just captions. I won't list the contents of the book here because other reviewers have already generously done that. I will say it's a book to be cherished and treated with the same level of respect and care that clearly went into planning it. It took many years of meticulous drawing to offer us the opportunity to sit, admire and learn from this book, and I for one am very thankful. To be clear: It is NOT color. There are ZERO pages with color. That could really disappoint someone who spends a lot of money expecting full color or even any color, so I just wanted to make that known. I am usually a person who likes color in books, especially an illustrated encyclopedia of Buddhist and Tibetan art! Tibetan art is known for it's vibrant color combinations as seen in Thangka art for example. And while I would *really love* to see a full color version of this book, I also have full appreciation for it's lack of real need for it in this case. The art is so detailed that in a strange way it might actually cheapen it somehow if it were in color. In any case, color or not is personal preference, I'll just say that in no way should lack of color imply dull with this book, that's for sure. Every page is stunning.Gorgeous brush drawings aside; I am also learning a great deal from the book. It's not something I can sit and easily digest much of at once, it's a very thick volume made for reference and that's how I use it. But I am amazed each time I look something up and learn much more than I expected. Lots of information here, this is really a must-have for anyone seriously interested in Tibetan symbolism, especially Tibetan Buddhist symbolism. It is one of a kind that I am aware of. I've searched over the years for a less expensive book on Tibetan/Buddhist symbols, but have found none so in-depth and seriously put together as this one. The same author did also publish a similar book "The Handbook of Tibetan Buddhist Symbols", which from my understanding is a MUCH less detailed book which may be good for someone only looking for light knowledge, but it is not a paperback version of this book, and shouldn't be confused with this encyclopedia. One final note, I was very pleased to see that Amazon shipped this with the book itself in tight protective plastic covering it (most books I order don't have this plastic), which kept the pages intact and perfect. It's too nice a book to have been tossed loose in a box, so I am glad they kept it protected as the publisher intended.I am very happy that I finally splurged and treated myself to this and I hope you treat yourself too! Namaste.

This book is even bigger and more extensive than I thought it would be. It is beautiful, well researched, well written, informative and educational. I gave it a well deserved 5, but I found myself wishing it was at least in part in color and that it had drawings and explanations of the Buddhas in it.

Unbelievable source to unravel symbols in arcane Tibetan art. Only source like it. Lots of visual and textual source material, but accessible to a reasonably experienced Western reader, i.e., you aren't going to understand Tibetan art from this if it is your first and only exposure.

This book is excellent reference for all artists. We use it constantly in the tattoo shop, it has designs for a wide variety of Tibetan and asian motifs. Very clear and precise illustrations too

Buddhist -- Tibetan symbolism --If you are interested in it or not -- this is a wonderful reference.

I would give this more stars if I could. Illustrations are really excellent and the text is an appropriate amount for a picture book and very informative. Excellent book!

excellent

I love this book. Having found it a few years back at a tattoo shop in Santa Cruz, California, I was only able to look at it for a short time but I was able to gain so much knowledge as to the wealth of designs and deep meaning found in Tibetan art. This book stayed in my mind thereafter. Here it is a few years and a couple tattoos later and the book resurfaced on Amazon. Great price, great condition and prompt service. This book is great for one who has interest in Tibetan art and it's symbolic nature. The concepts are well articulated and with each 'type' placed into a different chapter it makes refrencing quite simple. If you are interested, get this book!

This is a marvelous text which with simple but direct language explains some of the most baffling riddles of Buddhism: "form is emptiness, emptiness is form. ... all dharmas are marked with emptiness; they are neither produced nor destroyed, neither defiled nor immaculate, neither increasing nor decreasing." Many who read such writings proclaim that Buddhism is incoherent, but Thich Nhat Hanh beautifully and simply -- and briefly -- explains the truth of these apparently irreconcilable statements. The accessibility of his writing is remarkable.Although the book is short -- a mere 54 pages -- it should be read slowly and with a thoughtful and contemplative attitude. Thich Nhat Hanh is explaining some of the core tenets of Buddhist thought, and one should not rush through his exegis. Every sentence is to be savored and rolled around in the mind a bit, just as the Heart Sutra itself is. This is the text I send others to who want to know more about Buddhism. The elements can be found in this slim, easy-to-read volume,

This 54-page book is compiled from a series of talks that Thich Nhat Hanh presented to large groups of Americans at retreats and lectures in the United States. A master and enlightened communicator the author explains the aphorisms of the famous ancient Buddhist teacher, Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and his five elements that comprise a human being--form, feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness.Thich simplifies would-be difficult topics in a flowing easy to follow manner. He takes the time to translate and define foreign terms and provides vivid examples to help the reader visualize concepts. He skillfully shows how all things, life, and thought are part and parcel to one another. While this book was short, it was well-worth the price. It's not often that a truly enlightened person has the ability to transcend culture and relay the essence of such great works in such a succinct and enjoyable manner.I recommend this book to all people who want to better understand themselves and their relationship to their environment, life and death. For an equally enlightening book by this author, I recommend Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life.Buy this book now. You will not be sorry.

Good read. Very clear. Filled with delights. He’s a beautiful being with beautiful words. Not a deep dive, but a deep enough dive.

Thich Nhat Hanh is, in my opinion, the greatest Buddhist teacher and author of modern times. His ability to clearly communicate some very difficult and often misunderstood topics/concepts is remarkable. He makes the Heart Sutra, which is very brief but packed with meaning, accessible to anyone with a desire to understand.

Shipped as promised with no damages

The Heart Sutra is the premiere sutra, or sermon of the Buddha, in all of East Asian Buddhism. People from Tibet to Japan, and now in the West chant the Heart Sutra. Many people study it because it gets to the "heart" of Buddhism (no pun intended). As such, it's very easy to find commentaries on the Heart Sutra, but few can surpass this one.Thich Nhat Hanh understands the Sutra inside and out. The sutra can be cryptic and times, but Thich Nhat Hanh patiently works his way through each section, allowing the reader to really get the whole picture.I definitely recommend this book to any Buddhist, new or veteran, as (re-)discovering the Heart Sutra is a great step on the Buddhist path.

A truly superb commentary on the Prajñāpāramitāhá¹›daya - a gem.

This book will help you get a better understanding of the way everything is related, how everything "Inter-Is". I definitely recommend it!

excellent

How I missed this book it was published, I do not know! Russell's book, The Brain Book, I still use as an integral part of my courses.

Important book, well written and researched. Recommended. Nice, clean copy, fast service, thank you

Following the explanation of the possible evolution path, Peter Russel speculates on our ability to evolve to a higher level. From a philosophical standpoint, he looks into the issue of self, which is a major subject for any philosopher. Our self as we see it, is mainly a skin-encapsulated ego. This is an essential concept as every human being is an individual entity. We see the world as activities interacting between ourselves and the outside world. This is the source of human survival as well as a problem as it is the root of much of the thoughts on self-interest, personal well being, both materially and spiritually. It creates a conflicting situation between oneself and everything else. I read in another article that this "I-ness" was considered the source of human evil. In fact, it is a necessary and natural characteristic for every human being to remain as an individual.Throughout human history, there were instances where spiritual leaders spoke of the pure self. There are many theories, both philosophical and spiritual, that besides the skin-encapsulated ego, there is a pure self within everyone. However, this pure self is not the dominating reality of oneself because we are heavily affected by the interacting activities between ourself and the outside world in a conflicting situation. We are always trying to get what we need and want from the outside world, while defending ourselves from the intrusion of the outside world to our self-interest. To get to the pure self, one need to put aside the thoughts of everything of the material world. In fact, from a broad-based research, there were many cases where a person claimed that he suddenly saw the pure self. The general description has something in common: they all felt an unity between themselves and the whole world, or even the universe.Peter Russel practices transcendental meditation TM. This is the main stream meditation method which is very popular and has it roots from India. He says that TM is one of many ways which could help people calm down, get rid of all thoughts, and find the pure self, even for a brief moment. He proposes that such ability to know the pure self could be seen from the teaching of many spiritual leaders. Examples are: Buddha spoke of Nirvana, Christ spoke of the Kingdom of Heaven, Laozhi spoke of heaven and man becoming one, etc. These spiritual leaders all tried to preach what they knew and the method to know the pure self. However, such techniques were hard to learn and all religions which grew from such teachings all fell into superstition and indoctrination. The author sees the trend and suggests that as more and more people found the pure self through TM or other appropriate methods, a larger group of human minds will be linked spiritually. When such mind links reach a critical mass, the evolution leap to a global brain will occur. The human race will then evolve into a superorganism acting as a whole instead of 6.5 billion individuals.I consider such conclusion highly biased and heavily leaned towards the author's background as a practitioner of meditation. I think the conditions for an evolution leap as he proposed are not on the side of the spiritual mind alone. The complexity of the human society is from diversity, organization and connectivity. In particular, connectivity of the human mind is now aided by the advance of communication technology in the form of computers, Internet and artificial intelligence. Studies of intelligence all point to the destination of the awakening of artificial intelligence called the Singularity, where the entire computer network becomes one conscious mind. Although there are many horror movies and sci-fi stories about the machines dominating human, I tend to think that human would increasing become dependent on the technology he creates and they eventually merged into one. We and the entire computer network and all the artificial intelligence within would evolve together into the global brain. This global brain would strive to preserve plant Earth as Gaia and then look outwards for opportunities away from Earth.

Not too many philosophers have taken a serious crack at explaining what the advent of the Internet means to the future of human society. While technology takes a back-seat to spirituality in The Global Brain Awakens, author Peter Russell takes all the recent hype about global interconnectivity to a fascinating extreme: The Internet as the central nervous system to a newly evolved global organism. Russell draws parallels between the development of the central nervous system in living organisms and creation of Web communications here on Earth, which he argues is the biggest living organism of them all. Unfortunately, this intriguing line of thought is undermined by the book's conclusion, which collapses into a mire of hokey higher consciousness that lacks the same critical reasoning. We recommend this book to anyone interested in an alternative vision of a Web-enhanced future, provided you are not turned off by its new age clichés.

Every so often a book comes along that has the potential to "rock" the very fibre of your being, as well as impact society on a grand scale. This is one of those books! Peter Russell has put together a compelling story of how the "age of consciousness" will swamp the "information age" in comparison. It all starts with learning how to finally tap into that 95% of dead weight brain we carry around. If you are on the path to higher levels of consciousness (and who isn't?), then you will want this book. Guaranteed satisfaction!!

Very much like his other books

Mr. Russsell has provided an absolutely indelible stepping stone to the very being of our composure and identity. The reader sees him/her-self as an impressionable moving force towards the "wholeness" and hearth of this evergrowing vast system we are so fortunate to be a part of. Inspirational and Unforgettable-a driving force to a better I and a better sense of reality in itsself and its entirity.
