Exceptionally engaging. Prepare for a full history. He spends, appropriately, a lot of time in the "pre-history" stages, so by the time you get to the conquest by the Spaniards you are really able to understand the culture that was there, then how it meshed with the invaders to lay the foundation for what would then become Mexico... I really enjoyed the authors consistently reminding the reader that the concept of "Mexico" is a relatively new, statist understanding, that does not encompass well the inherently boundless lines that have defined the peoples of the area for literal thousands of years.Recommended to anyone who wants to comprehend Mexico, not just understand superficially.

I read this book because I had lived in the Southwest for many years interfacing with people from Mexico. Yet, I really never understood the history of Mexico and the impact the Spanish mindset had on the Mexican people. This book provided me the history I needed to understand the tremendous issues facing the people of Mexico. I highly recommend this book.

Fehrenbach is an excellent writer who, over the years, has covered a number of subjects. He wrote a book about the Korean War and his experiences in combat there; he wrote a book, "Lone Star" about the history of Texas. [Fehrenbach was a newspaper columnist in Texas in his 'day job" after the Korean War..] This book as a panoramic overview of the various regimes that ruled over Mexico for almost 500 years is broad in its sweep. It's well written, and for a gringo like me, it helps me understand Mexico and her current political state. The story ends about 1990.

Fire and Blood: A History of Mexico, published in 1973, is still the best history of Mexico and the Mexicans available. Written by San Antonian TR Fehrenbach, with whom I shared a 40-year friendship, the book sympathetically explains Mexican history, culture, character and personalities. Mexico’s friends should read this history, written before political correctness, as we ponder how best to confront the seemingly unsolvable dilemma on our southern border.Porfirio Diaz famously remarked, “Poor Mexico, so far from God; so close to the United States.” And yet, the United States was not Mexico’s problem. As Fehrenbach shows, within Mexico’s pre-European culture, a tiny minority subjugated the populace.Under the Spanish Colonial system, a tiny European minority subjugated everybody through a repressive Christianity allied with economic feudalism in which most land ownership was held in a few hands. European diseases were the greatest Colonial tragedy—claiming 90 percent of the population.Independence from Spain saw 100 years in which power bounced back and forth between “conservatives,” a coalition of church, landowners and military, and “liberals” left-leaning utopian dreamers. The Mexican Revolution, a civil war that killed 20 percent of the population, used classic Marxist bait/switch/control, to replace the church with single party rule, and, landowner monopolies with economic concentrations. As always, a tiny minority controls a population irresistibly drawn to strongmen offering leftist, big government “solutions” presented with a democratic veneer. Like its predecessors, this governing group blames its failures on the U.S.Two centuries after independence, Mexico, unlike its northern neighbors, has yet to demand the capitalist freedoms, which enable rule of law as well as real democracy and prosperity. Fehrenbach wrote this 40 years before the prominent emergence of the criminal cartels that are interdependent with police, military, courts, big government and big business. His conclusion regarding this modern coalition would be: “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”Despite these handicaps and contrary to Diaz’s statement, Mexico has been drawn forward because of its neighbor the United States. Absent the often-vilified American president, James K. Polk and his Mexican War, which brought Utah, California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas into the United States, the American Southwest would have shared the fate of “pobre Mexico.”

Written in a conversational style that gets you through a lot of dense information and complexity regarding the timeline facts and dates. There is a strong social anthropology theme and it is consistent in tone and form. Each chapter has a quote to set the tone and ending paragraphs to summarize the gist. For me, this was important on a very personal level as I am delving into my ancestry that was only recently made known to me. I am very glad I read it.

Review

“A hybrid of memoir, technical primer and social history . . . [Auerbach] suggests that we need to be bitwise (i.e. understand the world through the lens of computers) as well as worldwise . . . We need guides on this journey—judicious, balanced and knowledgeable commentators, like Auerbach.” —The New York Times Book Review"[A] fun and informative memoir of a life in coding explains what makes coding deeply fascinating, and is tamped full, like a scientist's experiment in sphere-packing, of history, fact, and anecdote." —Popular Mechanics, Best Sci/Tech Books of the Year “A valuable resource for readers seeking to understand themselves in this new universe of algorithms, as data points and as human beings.” —The New Republic  “With wit and technical insight, former Microsoft and Google engineer Auerbach explains how his knowledge of coding helped form him as a person, at the same time showing how coding has influenced aspects of culture such as personality tests and child-rearing . . . An enjoyable look inside the point where computers and human life join.” —Publisher’s Weekly“An eye-opening look at computer technology and its discontents and limitations.” —Kirkus Reviews “A profound memoir, a manifesto, and a warning about the digital world. Auerbach spins out the secret history of the computational universe we all live in now, filtering insider technical know-how through a profoundly humanistic point of view like no book since Gödel, Escher, Bach.”  —Jordan Ellenberg, author of How Not to Be Wrong “Auerbach artfully combines a personal and professional narrative with a philosophical examination of the way the real and digital worlds contrast and intertwine. It is a subject that will take on ever more importance as algorithms continue to gain dramatically more power and influence throughout our world.” —Martin Ford, author of Rise of the Robots “Very attractive (in all senses). The sentences resemble something both plain and clear, like a Shaker desk—a kind of generous transparency, and about things that are not transparent at all.” —John Crowley, author of Little, Big “A delightful journey through the history of personal computing. It succeeds brilliantly at conveying what it’s like to be a coder and at exploding common stereotypes. I couldn’t stop reading.” —Scott Aaronson, David J. Bruton Centennial Professor of Computer Science, University of Texas at Austin

Bitwise isn’t so much a continuous narrative of a life as a set of reflections on not just his life but the data-trolling business that increasingly conditions our choices as individuals. Auerbach worked first for Microsoft (a wonderful account of life in the Microsoft trenches) and then for Google. His comparison of the two is insightful and helpful.“I had coded servers at Microsoft, but Microsoft’s entire business was based around the PC desktop. That focus was one of the primary reason Microsoft found it hard to shift into the internet age, where the locus was not a home or workplace but a web server or database somewhere else on the internet –what’s today known as the “cloud,” the amorphous mass of data around and above us, only dimly visible. Unlike Microsoft, Google knew servers from the beginning. .. All engineers shared a single enormous code repository, rather than having a different repository for each team, as Microsoft had had…. These machines were always running, and they were always running my code. …The more significant difference was data. Microsoft had succeeded as a software company, [but] Google’s lifeblood was data. Google needed software got collect, store and manage this data, but at Google, software served data.… [T]he general approach at Google was to see how much could be gotten out of what little explicit structure was there.”This is a visual book, with many pictures and charts and spell outs of segments of computer code. If you’re not a programmer yourself, some of the code passages fall flat but the overall effect still moves forward, and it feels like Auerbach is taking the reader seriously: “I’m not going to shortchange you. Maybe you won’t follow me every step but you’ll know all the way along that I’m not hiding things from you.”More importantly, it is filled with occasional, and on the edge, insights into our new and rapidly emerging digital world, its opportunities and its pitfalls.A side point: Auerbach pursued a dual path in his youth, computers on one side, philosophy and literature on the other. It’s an attractive merger because, as he makes clear over and over, computer and data surfing issues are also human issues, which affect the quality of lives and even how we conceive of ourselves as human beings. The downside is the occasional use of a literary or philosophical quotation that doesn’t seem quite to hit the mark. The upside is a wider spectrum to examine the effects of today’s computer life on human life. One of the loveliest, and most insightful, segments of the book is Auerbach’s observations on the growing life of his first child, reflecting on it from what he knows about computer learning. Reflecting on his daughter’s transformation in her first year, he writes about computer learning: “The process of creating artificial intelligence is coming to seem less a matter of coding up algorithms and more of applying algorithms to a growing system.”This is a serious book about serious matters. It is also gracious, thoughtful, questing. Here are some random observations from the book.A footnote on p. 24: ”Processor development has gradually relaxed the idea that a computer is a calculator performing strictly ordered operations at increasing speeds.”A discussion of the largely French literary movement, Oulipo: authors like Queneau, Perec, Calvino (one of my favorites), Harry Matthews, who wrote deliberately mathematical constraints (a missing letter in Queneau, use of the taro deck to set story in Calvino). Two different times, schemata to explain the organization of James Joyce’s Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake.He cites William Wimsatt: scientific theories are “piecewise approximations to reality.”He dumps all over Jung for unsupported assumptions about the nature of human reality. One of the most reliably expensive keywords over the last fifteen years was “mesothelioma,” bid on primarily by law firms looking for asbestos victims. Many law and insurance keywords go for over a hundred dollars per single click. In 20916 “best melothelioma lawyer” cost you over $900 a click. The observation that the Software giants look for low cost, low risk advances, and not revolutionary new approaches. “Google avoids trying to grasp the meaning of the web pages it retrieves. Apple revived its brand with new hardware rather than innovative software. Microsoft succeeded by slightly outperforming competitors… Google, Amazon, and Facebook are less valuable for their algorithms and for their state.: the sum total of all the data the system contains and manipulates. None of these companies can clear out their systems and ‘start over,’ algorithmically.”An interesting but fairly trivial fact about David Auerbach: he was responsible for the creation of the first ever Emoticon. (Non-information expressed as information.)

There is a great book to be written at the intersection of computing in literature but this one is not it. What starts as an exploration of someone who grew up in the 80s with computers worked with them professionally and then became a writer meanders into parenting, society, big data and literature at large in a very confused world.

The book wanders between topics, but the topics are all interesting and the connections made between them are often insightful. There are a lot of neat references to well known and obscure video games from decades ago, with thoughtful lessons drawn from those games and applied to current technology trends and challenges. The prose are well written, the content is thoughtful, and the author is an expert in the areas discussed. One of the quotes on the back compares it to Godel Escher Bach, which I think is a fair comparison in style and type of appeal -- you will probably have a similar opinion on both books, be that good or bad.

Full disclosure: I'm friends with David and read an earlier draft of the book to give pre-publication feedback.Bitwise is about the lessons that computing can teach us about human nature, and vice versa. The writing is by turns erudite, funny, and touching.

with the title containing "A Life in Code" the reader might be excused for thinking this is a book about what it is like to work in the software industry so prominent in our world today. Topics such as what the education is like and experiences on the first job and then growth in the career are ignored. Instead this book is a rambling meditation on a variety of topics only tangentially related (if at all) to understanding the life of a software professional. Aside from learning that the author didn't much care for the politics at Microsoft and admires Google (where, he tells us, he was in the top 10% of engineers) you won't come away from this book with much more understanding of the career and the people that work in the field than you started.

Loved it. Very refreshing narrative. This book kept me interested the entire way through. It you enjoy either computers or philosophy, check this book out.

If I were a writer and knew that I would have to give up money if I didn't have a "book" on my publisher's desk by a date certain, and time was up, this is the kind of load of crap I would dish up. What passes for a plot is meaningless: the whole book is fleshed out with WW II history that needn't be narrated as fiction, and arcane minutiae of criminal and civil procedure that couldn't be more boring and, moreover, is woefully inaccurate. I actually felt that I'd been tricked into reading this steamer by being bamboozled by Grisham's reputation, on which I can't comment. BORING!!!!!!

I have always enjoyed John Grisham's novels. This one is a disappointment. First of all I did NOT like the ending at all. I know that's about me and not about the book but I still didn't like it. More than that I didn't like wasting my time thumbing through page after page after page of completely useless narrative. There is a vastly long section at the center of the book where he is writing about the mothers mental problems and the sons law school career that are a complete waste of time. It's obvious that the publishers are paying him by the page or by the word. The result is a huge amount of unnecessary text that doesn't really contribute to the story, that is very useful in putting me to sleep. This is not the first time this is happened. I have found it happening more and more frequently with other authors.

This is a disjointed, dislikable book - a soap opera with some courtroom window dressing and the Bataan Death March thrown in for no apparent reason except alleged depth of feeling. The mystery of the main character is that he won't talk - a sort of misguided Clint Eastwood Man With No Name anti-hero. Not talking can work on the screen but does tend to drag on on the page. The wife does a bad thing while her husband is slogging around in the Philippines, although it isn't clear what that is until the end. Consequences ensue. The hero kills somebody else. The generations-old family farm is lost to a shyster lawyer. Almost everybody dies. Who knew what? When did they know it? Who was wrong? In the end, who cares? I can't believe I read the whole thing.

If you wish to spend at least 1/3 of the book getting a histoty lesson on Gen McAuthor and Japan's takeover of the Philippenes then you may enjoy the book. I skipped over the large majority of this section. The book also drug on and on in other parts. I wanted to enjoy a thriller like the authors earlier books, not a sad, tedious and boring book like this one. this will be my last book by this author.

I was really eager to read this book, and hated it. Long long descriptive passages about mundane things. So much dramatic build up about nothing. The war parts are appreciated but the rest was a waste of time witn unsympathetic characters. Time to find a new fave author.

This was a bad read. Too much information on mostly known history. Agree, not enough character development on some people. Way too much detail before "secret" was FINALLY revealed in last 10 pages!!

A lot of long arduous filler to finally reveal nothing of surprise. Dont believe the hype. This is not his best work. I feel more like the victim of a con job than a satisfied fan.

I read all of Mr. Grisham's novels and look forward to each release with anticipation. But none before have held my interest as much as The Reckoning. My uncle through marriage is a survivor of the Bataan Death March. He never spoke of his experiences. Not a history buff, I had no understanding of the atrocaties of this war. This novel was spellbinding from start to finish.

How far would you go if your five-year-old son were sexually molested? Jodi Picoult takes on this question in PERFECT MATCH, a story that kept me reading all night. Nina Frost, a dedicated prosecutor specializing in child sexual abuse cases, Caleb, a stonemason, and their young son, Nathaniel, are a happy Maine family until Nathaniel suddenly stops talking. What has happened to their gregarious child, Nina and Caleb frantically wonder. The answer becomes clear as Nathaniel exhibits signs of having been molested, but only he knows the identity of his abuser. Using American Sign Language, which he learned from his therapist, he eventually leads Nina to a shocking answer.Nina, who has spent her career attempting to protect children from abusers, flies into a rage so intense that she barely recognizes herself. A mesmerizing courtroom drama then plays out. This is not an ordinary book about a run-of-the-mill trial. It is filled with twists and turns, and all the while, the Frost family is tested. Will Nina, Caleb and Nathaniel exist as a family after the long emotional ordeal comes to an end? And what will that end look like?As she always does, Jodi Picoult makes me think. In PERFECT MATCH, she tackles an uncomfortable subject head-on and in a well-written, thoroughly researched book, she makes me wonder to what lengths I would go to protect my child.

I must have read this book when it was first published, but I hate to admit I did not remember it at all. I usually remember all Jodi's books.I only gave it three stars because of the main character, Nina Frost, the most hot-headed person you have ever come accross. When she finds out her five year old son has been molested, she goes off the rails in her actions, hurting all those around her who love her. There are quite a few mitigating reasons for her actions, but the way she reacted every time aggravated me to the extreme.Apart from that, the book is a page turner, moving fast in a plot that twists and turns when you least expect it and well written like all of this author' s novels. I just wish I could have liked Nina Frost more and not judged her so harshly. But there again non of us know what our reactions will be and what we are capable of under severe circumstances.

I've always enjoyed Picoult's novels. They are thought provoking and relevant to today's topical issues. This one had an extra interest for me as it has echoes of Arthur Miller's “The Crucible” which I remember teaching to a sixth form class some years ago. This one deals with Jack St Bride who has just been released from an 8 month sentence in jail as a result of a “plea” in spite of the fact that he was innocent of the crime he was accused of. A teenage student had said she'd had an affair with her popular teacher, a situation where many young girls fancy they are in love with. She kept a diary with her fantasies recorded, but when she realised that this would implicate her teacher in a criminal offense she admitted it was all just in her mind. However the damage was done and she was unable to retract. Jack seeks to move to a place where he was unknown and kept himself to himself, avoiding contact with women who might be able to lay a similar claim against him. However, in small town Salem, word gets out and the rumour of a preditor in their midst spreads wildly. In the town there are a group of teenage girls who fancy themselves as witches and practise magical rites. Add to this the desire to tempt fate . . . . . and here is a dramatic plot. About of third of the book covers the trial, and though I have always found the arguments put forward by prosecution and defense lawyers to be clever in the past, in this novel I felt it was rather tame and predictable. I enjoyed it never-the-less. A good read.

Loved it. I have read several of Ms. Picoult's books and usually like them very much. Surprisingly, My Sister's Keeper had been one I didn't care for too much. It took me forever to get through it. Luckily there was a surprise at the end to reward me for my tenacity. Long story short, after that somewhat disappointing experience, I hesitantly picked up Salem Falls, but I'm happy to report, that it was one of my favorite books of hers so far. Very relatable characters, a gripping story (case). I spent many hours on a rainy Sunday reading this book, even my boyfriend said: You must like this one. I couldn't tear myself away.

As always JP is flawless in her story telling and thought provoking in her character’s actions. I don’t really like these people very much - except the child - but that is not necessary for a good novel. I had a difficult time relating to this mother who does something that I could never see myself doing. During the trial I came to some acceptance of her actions. I go so far as accepting that her deed was truly a defensible action. I was, and remain, totally unready to accept the more calculated action of her husband. This is a mostly emotionally charged review driven by my own moral ground.
