Review

“[Y]ou want this. You want Mick Wall's Enter Night. The Metallisaga is fascinating, almost an epic, and Wall is well up to the task of telling it.” ―Boston Phoenix“They may be the greatest band of all time, but Metallica have been plagued by a load of artistic misfires and band-member squabbles. In this extensive biography by British rock journalist Mick Wall, no lowlight goes unnoticed...His narrative is straightforward and fast-paced - it's fun to see the band transform almost overnight from scruffy, Mötorhead-loving teenagers to hard-partying gods of thunder.” ―Rolling Stone (3 and ½ stars)“Wall has a long history with Metallica...his deep archive of interviews give a sense of the story unfolding in real time.” ―New York Times Book Review“Enter Night, Mick Wall's biography of Metallica confirms this grizzled veteran to be [an] engaged and waspishly authoritative chronicler of metal's most hirsute behemoths.” ―Independent on Sunday (UK)“[A] flaming juggernaut of a heavy-metal biog... the author writes a deceptively casual-looking, sincere but half-amused prose.” ―Guardian (UK)“'It takes a writer of Mick Walls' pedigree and calibre... to present the whole wild, wonderful and emotionally draining tale all over again and make it as consistently fascinating and momentous as Enter Night...this is the definitive account of heavy metal's biggest band of all.” ―Classic Rock“Millions of words have been written on Metallica, but few journalists have been present at so many of the band's milestones... [Wall's] eye for detail through the early years makes the book truly enlightening in the way it captures the character of the major players.” ―Rock Sound“A cinderblock of a bio, a worthy addition to the library of any self-respecting member of the Metal Militia...The writer clearly did his homework.” ―The Cleveland Sound

The beginning of the book is interesting where he tells how they got started and their backstories but beyond that this is really Mick reviewing and trashing a lot of Metallica records. He states when they put out Master of Puppets that it is way ahead of Ride the Lightning in every aspect especially in songwriting and production. I think a lot of people would disagree that MOP is better than RTL. Why have I heard For Whom the Bell Tolls in a few movies. Can't recall any MOP songs that I know of. FWTBTs and Fade to Black I think are 2 of the best songs they ever recorded. He really puts down Justice for All... which I think a lot of Metallica fans believe is thier fasted and heaviest albums. Even to go as far as to put down the CLASSICS Harvester of Sorrow and Shortest Straw. He even blatenly lies saying Four Leave Clover wasn't a hit in America. Funny the song went to #1 on mainstream rock chart. (Really the only radio format that plays Metallica songs.) Another thing he trashes is Death Magnetic. And asks "Why did they record this? Well Mr Wall, I think it was for the fans that absolutely love hearing new music from them. (Especially ME!) He says they brought back their old sound but all the songs were fogettable after listening to them. I know I haven't forgotten them and loved the record. I personally think its the best since Justice and IMHO many of the songs are classics. I will say that he was fair to Jason Newstead telling about how such a raw deal he got from joining a band he loved. I would say its worth reading for Metallica Fans but his reviews of Metallica's records which makes up a lot of the last half of the book is just awful.

I don't usually review books but this time reading the rubbish written by what must be Jason Newsted's girlfriend below I just had to. I live in the UK and was lucky enough to get a copy of this book for Xmas. I have since read it three times. I am also a Metallica nut and have other books on them. None are even close to this one though. Enter Night is a masterpiece. Far from playing favors, Wall ignores the band's feelings to tell it as it is. It's amazing they will want to stay buddies with him after they read it. The truth hurts fellas and this is it. It also means when Wall says something is good you know it really must be. Best rock book I have read for a very long time. But then hey this is Mick Wall. If you read his Zep book you'll know this guy is an awesome writer.

Five stars for a thorough and interesting review of each band member and their respective backgrounds, as well as what was going on with the band and what they (and producers) were trying to achieve with each album and even many individual songs. It proved to be one of those books that I couldn't wait to start reading again to shed light on what would happen in the next few months/years/events for the band. Since reading and finishing the book I've found myself listening more to Metallica and thinking about what it was going through at the time the song was wrote and what went into writing that particular song. Admittedly I did not like how freely the author would criticize or speak ill of many songs and some albums, some of which I think were some of Metallica's better songs and work overall. These are Mick Wall's personal opinions, and he is certainly entitled to them, but I didn't appreciate nor value his thoughts on them, I read the book to know about the band itself. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a Metallica fan or even just a fan of hard rock music.

You don't need to read this book if you have already read Joel McIver's masterful books, JUSTICE FOR ALL: THE TRUTH ABOUT METALLICA and TO LIVE IS TO DIE: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF METALLICA'S CLIFF BURTON.If you have not read McIver's books, then be sure to read TO LIVE IS TO DIE for an account of Cliff. And before that, read Wall's ENTER NIGHT for an up-to-date biography of the band and for more even handed musical criticism. McIver doesn't like much of Metallica's work after AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. Wall sees more value in it, though he is unduly negative on DEATH MAGNETIC.Unlike McIver or any previous biographer, Wall spends some time discussing the rumor that shortly prior to Cliff's death, Cliff and James had seriously discussed replacing Lars. The speculation that Dave Lombardo from Slayer would have been brought in to replace Lars seems spot on, as Lombardo was particularly unhappy with his bandmates at that time. What would have happened to Lars? Wall doesn't speculate, but I'd wager he would have gone to Dave and joined up with Megadeth. Now that really would have made for some bitter rivalries in the thrash world!Wall helped answer a question that always bothered me: When they got to be arena headliners, why did Metallica have Queensryche and The Cult open for them? Why didn't Metallica take a page from Ozzy's playbook and have an opening band that was more underground and extreme? The answer: both Queensryche and The Cult were represented by Metallica's management, QPrime. I really like both Queensryche and The Cult, and I enjoyed those shows. But it would have been great if Metallica challenged the audience with Death, Cannibal Corpse, or Morbid Angel as an opening band. And what a difference that could have made for Metallica's future development.Wall makes a couple of howling mistakes, both owing to his being from Britain: First, he claims that the GARAGE DAYS RE-REVISITED EP was released as THE $9.98 EP in America. Incorrect. It was released as THE $5.98 EP on cassette and record and was also released on CD as THE $9.98 CD. Second, he claims the album AND JUSTICE FOR ALL takes its title from the final line of the Declaration of Independence. The phrase is actually found in the final line of the Pledge of Allegiance. But the more direct inspiration for the album title comes from 1979 Al Pacino movie AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.All in all, it's worth a read if this will be the first book on Metallica you pick up.

In-depth, good story. Not big Metallica fan, but enjoyed it.

This was a gift and my friend loved it.

I knew most of this stuff.Enjoyed the detail about the album recording sessions.Had some good pictures but not too many.Didn't agree much with the authors take on the last ten years or so of Met's albums (he thinks they all basically sucked. He kind of slammed Death Magnetic which is crazy, that album was GREAT.

The authors did a GREAT job in tackling a difficult problem, namely how to tackle poverty and create long-term economic and social prosperity. The Prosperity Paradox team's answer is simple, yet powerful: even if it sounds counterintuitive, enduring prosperity for less developed countries will not come from fixing poverty, but rather from investing in innovations that create new markets within these countries. The book is effective in spelling out support for its thesis. Starting with the idea that every nation has the potential for extraordinary growth - what the authors call "nonconsumption" - the book goes on to detail examples where nations (e.g. Singapore, South Korea, Japan) and innovative organizations (e.g. Aravind in India, Celtel throughout much of Africa, etc.) have taken advantage of this potential. What the authors do so well, however, is not just to list out examples of innovative companies and policies, but rather to devise a complete framework based on those successful examples listed that can in turn be replicated in other cases. For instance, the authors argue that infrastructure development should be pulled in alongside to support a market-developing innovation rather than pushed down via institutions in the absence of that innovation, go on to list positive examples, and then analyze exactly why pulling worked better than pushing. In developing their framework for how nations can aim towards prosperity, the authors are doing policymakers a great favor.Another aspect which I appreciated about the Prosperity Paradox was the intuition and empathy with which the researchers approached development. Take the chapter on corruption, for instance. The authors argue that corruption can often times accompany development simply because, in some situations, it can meet people's needs and their desire for progress better than legal means. If policymakers can focus on offering their populations alternatives that are more attractive than corruption (e.g. jobs that pay sufficient money, upward mobility, etc.), then those states would have a chance to tackle corruption long-term. This stands in stark contrast to common belief that simply investing in strict anti-corruption initiatives or electing governments that promise to end corruption will in fact end that corruption. Most importantly, though, the authors profess hope for nations in poverty. As they state in the last chapter, the authors believe that the Prosperity Paradox can become a Prosperity Process that is sustained by a continuous commitment to innovation. The examples in the appendix only provide more hope of a brighter future, as we can witness entrepreneurs all around the globe working with limited resources in different, challenging environments to solve the real problems faced by people daily. On this basis, it's not hard to see why The Prosperity Paradox is currently an Amazon best seller.

I wish we could magically deliver this powerful book to the nightstands of political and business leaders worldwide. The Prosperity Paradox brings the insightful theories of Dr. Clay Christensen to bear on the world’s most challenging issues that impact billions of people. It offers a positive, hopeful view of how focusing on market-creating innovations can transform institutions, cultures and countries.I found the history lessons in American economic development (Singer, Eastman, Ford, Giannini) fascinating, as well as parallel examples in Asia. The authors research is profound and compelling, yet very easy and pleasurable to consume over a few sittings. While this book keeps its focus on global opportunities, I’m inspired by how the authors thinking could be applied locally, to struggling communities within my country. (U.S.) This is hinted at in the Appendix - Disney in Detroit. The notion of fostering pull rather than push is very powerful, as is the focus on non-consumption.Whether you are new to the theories of Disruptive Innovation and Jobs to be Done, or well-acquainted with them, this is an important book that should be at the top of your 2019 reading list.

The book makes a profound and correct observation that our common view of a major global problem has a serious flaw! Whether it's Africa or the US, we shouldn't be focused on beating poverty. Instead, we should focus on bringing prosperity, a much more lasting and independent concept. Although much of the discussions in the book are centered in Africa, I believe this book is just as relevant, if not more, to our backyards and inner city streets where we continue to witness major poverty-related problems. Christensen makes it very clear that beating poverty is not a gradual process. It is more of a big jump supported by innovations that create new markets. We don't create good jobs by handing out things, but by creating new products and services that open up new markets. That was true a hundred years ago, and that is true today! This book contains one of the most significant macroeconomic observations in the past 50 years!

It’s been a long time since I read one of Christianson’s books. This one has some really good ideas. I’ve often wondered why some countries stay poor even when they have a wealth of resources. I believed it was cultural, but I think I may be wrong. The South Korea example is perfect. They created prosperity through their choice of markets. Countries that focus on infrastructure and aid never seem to improve. We see the same thing in our cities. What if they focused on unserved markets instead of welfare. It might make a difference.

This book has been well- thought out, well-reasoned, and is a great work addressing challenges in the developing world as an excellent follow-on to the disruptive innovation work that has defined Christensen's career. Efosa Ojomo and Karen Dillon as excellent co-authors and their insights shine through as well. This book should be required reading for every course on international development at every business school and every public policy school! All International Dev professionals should have this book in their personal and office libraries! Can't wait for the next installment from this dynamic trio!

Truly great book. Very easy read. Also extremely insightful. Great for people passionate about creating lasting sustainable change. Found it hard to put it down when I started reading.
