Review

"Riordan fans will find all of the key elements here: wisecracking narration, underdog kid turned hero (well, god turned underdog turned hero in this case), mythological core, and robust side characters who round out the field. This is familiar territory for Riordan, but the formula works so well, and Apollo is just so appealingly unpleasant, that there's little to fault in this adventure."―Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books"A clash of mythic intrigues and centuries of pop culture to thrill die-hard and new fans alike."―Kirkus"Riordan's many fans will be thrilled with this return to the world of Percy Jackson and friends. . . This latest has Riordan's signature wry narration, nonstop action, and mythology brought to life."―School Library Journal

Well, I'm hooked on Riordan's books, although I prefer the Greek/Roman world to the Egyptian and Norse series. It takes a writer of Riordan's skill to make me interested in following the adventures of Apollo as a human, since he's about the least admirable, most dislikable Olympian in my eyes. Anyway, I enjoyed this, which sets the stage for Apollo's redemption after getting tossed out on his ear, and sets up another new villain for Percy and hopefully, Jason, to join forces with the gods and Save The World - again!

I’m happy about the release of this book, back to Camp Half Blood, and I admit the trip into Norse mythology was fun for a bit, but I’ve grown quite fond of our past protagonists and it was nice to have them back. One thing I would recommend, this book could be read on its own, without reading the others that have come before it, but I wouldn’t. There are some brief summaries of Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter, but it talks about the outcome of those events. Also, the book takes place at the start of Riordian’s last book Magnus Chase, and you know that based on what Annabeth is doing, she’s in Boston. The book has Percy for a bit in it, but then it is primarily focused on Apollo and a new demi-god Meg. Like many of Riordian’s past books, the origins of Meg are a bit of a mystery. Uh, I really have to say, there are some hysterical reference in the book that are not entirely based on the knowledge of children in the normal YA range. Shout-out to a Rocky Horror mention! Anyway, the book is enjoyable to read as all the others and is quick.Apollo is on earth as a mortal, the oracles have stopped prophesizing and there are a lot of tie-in’s to other stories that will emerge in the future, in particular Leo. I was worried that Apollo would annoy me, but his arrogance is amusing, and he has some pretty interesting narratives on his fatherhood, especially being proud of his children’s vanity. As a condition of his time on earth he must serve a demi-God, which is an enjoyable paring to read about and the character of Meg is unique and very strong. There’s still more to learn about her background though, which I am excited for in the future.I don’t want to give too much away, but the new threat is a bit different from the past and pertains to historical figures, not simply the Gods and Goddesses in the traditional sense. The entire story is told from Apollo’s perspective and it’s kind of nice to have on-going pop-culture references, even as recent as Alabama Shakes.I highly recommend it! However, wait to read this after you’ve read the other Percy Jackson books!

I am a fan of Riordan. I enjoy how he takes ancient mythology and relates it to the modern world in a way that intrigues young and older minds alike and inspires kids to learn more about ancient histories and civilizations. This first book of the new Apollo series was much anticipated by both myself and my son (age 12). That anticipation may have been a disservice, however, as the story did not quite meet the high expectations. While the Percy Jackson and the subsequent books brought the reader into this mythological cross-section with relatable characters, Apollo falls short of establishing this relationship. He is frequently far too depressed and, for lack of a better description, whines too much in self pity. While I realize this is an internal struggle for Apollo, it is not so dissimilar to the feelings of inadequacy Percy often felt, yet because of better development, the reader was drawn into Percy's feelings rather than just being annoyed by them. It is never a good thing for the reader to find your main character annoying. I did finish the book and I am hoping Apollo's inner whine struggle will abate, or at least be relatable n the future installments. My son did not finish the book. And that is saying something, as he is an avid reader and huge fan. He easily reads two books a week and loves all the Percy Jackson, Olympian, Roman, Egyptian and Nordic books by Riordan. He was greatly disappointed and would probably disagree with my giving the book three stars. However, I stand by the three stars, admitting this is not Riordan's best work, but the research is excellent, the plot moves sufficiently, he did create characters I care about and he did provide adequate conflict, even if the resolutions were sometimes over simplified. It is an okay read if you are patient enough to get past Apollo being a little too Apollo. I do hope the next book is better, but this one does not leave me in a rush to pre-order it.

This is one of the best books I have read. It was great that Rick kept Apollos arrogance but still made him realize that he had faults. I'm going to be real here and say that I was in tears on multiple occasions. It was also great that he decided to let people like Leo and Calypso have the spot light instead of Percy and Annabeth. I was laughing so hard and some parts, I almost fell off the chair I was sitting on.This is a book that you are going to want to read and will keep you on the edge of your toes waiting for the next one.

Wow. I have read several of the authors books and they were excellent. In this book he decided to get political. The first 80 percent were dedicated to how smart Obama was and how his brilliance brought Osama to justice. The next 15 percent of the book was objective and chronicled the finding and killing of Osama. The last 5 talked about how brilliant Obama handled the aftermath. Most of the book was difficult to read, which was surprising for this author.

I wish I would have checked the reviews before buying this book. After reading 24 pages, I looked at the reviews to see if I was missing something. Not. A terrible political piece. What a disappointment from the author, whom I had respected.

I only liked this book, am a big fan of Mark Bowden. His work with Black Hawk Down, and Killing Pablo are his best. Those two books were objective and thorough. This one is more a history lesson with much of the current Presidential Administration Input and thoughts. I did not need the history of the life of the President, and it took the focus off the book which was the efforts by the intelligence community to find U.B.L.. To that end, if you are looking for a book about how Bin Laden was found and taken out, this one is not it. I do understand that much is still classified, but there are far better books out there that explain the demise of U.B.L. better, and leave the politics out.

The only thing missing from this book are details on the action at the compound itself, -which is available in the book No Easy Day, and the 'Shooter' article published in Esquire magazine. But this book is supreme in every other respect and needs to be read as part of an overall appreciation of the build up to the action proper in Abbotobad. So if you are only interested in what happened during the raid itself, this book sheds little light, but not only is that information available elsewhere, but this book more than makes up for it with truly outstanding details in every other facet. The two books you need to read to get the gist of the raid are this one, and No Easy Day. Also, Google 'Esquire Bin Laden Shooter' and theres an excellent report from another Seal on the raid. Avoid the book Seal Target Geronimo, its full of wrong information. No single book contains 'everything worth knowing' about what happened. This book has a lot of great information, just like No Easy Day does. Even as good as the movie Zero Dark Thirty is, it has its own agenda as well, and its own glaring omissions. The movie is so afraid to offend the arab world, it glosses over events that happened during the raid like UBL's body being dragged down the stairs by the feet (not yet in a body bag) or even just the kill shots themselves.. simply not shown at all. More time is spent in the movie showing Maya crying at the end than UBL. No single source contains everything worth knowing.

Mark Bowden's latest book, "The Finish," details the 10-year effort to find and deal with Osama Bin Laden. Unlike Mark Owens/Mark Bissonette's earlier "No Easy Day," Bowden's book focuses on the actual hunt for the terrorist chief, detailing how the American military and defense communities retooled themselves to deal with a terrorist enemy that was everywhere and nowhere at once. President Obama receives some kudos for keeping OBL's capture/killing a top priority and for his unusually forceful decision to enter Pakistan to carry that out. But he also receives some censure for taking too much credit for the mission's success.Unlike "No Easy Day," the Bin Laden raid comprises only one chapter of "The Finish," which, according to Bowden, draws upon Owens' account for details. Both should be read, along with Esquire magazine's recent article, "The Shooter," in order to begin framing an opinion on what happened that night. Two facts emerge -- one, there was practically no chance bin Laden was going to be taken alive; and two, the "fog of war" is a real thing. We have three accounts, maybe four if you count Zero Dark Thirty, and maybe three different versions of what happened.Bowden, a professional journalist and author of "Blackhawk Down" and "Killing Pablo," among others, is always an entertaining writer. However, one is somewhat left with the impression that this book was rushed to print in reaction to news events.

I recommend Peter Bergen's "Manhunt". This book offers nothing new and leaves me wondering why it was written at all.

a well written book easy to read for the average adult. Author Bowden goes into details on the politics of the hunt for UBL including sections on Obama and his outlook on hunting down UBL as well as his promise to go into Pakistan if high value targets found there, and the use of drones to kill terrorists in Yemen and Pakistan. The actual raid/killing of UBL is not as detailed as the book written by the SEAL who wrote under a pen name and was on the raid and fired shots into UBL body killing him. I am always interested in any book about the killing of UBL and details of the operation, due to my obsession with the termination of the terrorist who financed and coaxed the hijackers into attacking America on Nine Eleven. I want to know a lot about how justice was done and UBL was killed cowering in his bedroom hiding behind his youngest wife.

In one of the first nonfiction accounts of the lengthy & successful hunt for Osama Bin Laden Mark Bowden recounts the search without leaving any important details out. But in way too many details make it a difficult, at times, read for me. It was okay but Hue 1968 is Bowden's best work. Still, the last chapter on how the raid went is up to Zero Dark Thirty.

The cover of this notebook was what caught my eye. After receiving this though I was a bit disappointed. The journal is not a lay flat. Which I really wanted. Also, the pages are a bit thinner than I wanted. I might save this for a drawing/sketchbook and order something else for my bullet journal needs.

Love, love, love bullet journaling and this notebook is great for it. Light gray dot grid allows you to line up letters and have straight edges on charts and graphs. The intro is helpful in that it gives you ideas for what to journal but the "how to bullet journal" page is vague and not very helpful. The cover is some sort of rubbery texture that I personally don't care for and I wish it were spiral bound for ease of laying open but otherwise a great bullet journal.

So far no bleed through, the pages are as advertised, and of course, the front cover is awesome. Would recommend to a friend beginning any kind of bujo project - the price is good and the book is perfect for on the go.

I really love this spiral. It's not hard cover so it's lighter if you like to carry your journal in your bag. The paper is a bit thin for heavier markers (like sharpie). I'm probably going to get some coloring pencils for it. Pen works fine as well. Overall very pleased for the price!

I really liked this journal. I used fine liner pens in it, and though there was some ink bleed-though, it was minimal and not particularly noticeable when using both sides of the page. Using water color pencils on the pages was more difficult (water quickly damaged the thin pages), and highlighter ink/brush pens are a little too heavy to use without noticeable bleed-though. I liked the plentiful pages, and the only real down side was that the glue binding made it difficult for pages to lay flat. I'd recommend having the book rebound with spiral binding.

I love this bullet journal. It has come amazing ideas in the front which helps add to the fun. The pages are thick and the cover is really pretty. All in all I would 100% buy this again.

Great starter for bullet or other journaling, good quality paper, not over the top. Seem durable. Don’t purchase if you are looking for a loose leaf or spiral. This is a center bound product so there is a ditch.

Just starting bullet journaling and this book is perfect, I wasted a larger book because I am visually impaired. This book is the perfect size to really make your journal pages with larger print and designs. Love it

The Politics of Everybody: Feminism, Queer Theory and Marxism at the Intersection

Review

“Like a breath of air from some enlightened future, this book will invigorate and inspire all readers looking for a fresh alternative to the smugly inward theoreticism of so much contemporary feminism and queer theory, advancing by leaps and bounds a conversation that has struggled to emerge for far too long.” (James Penney, Trent University)“Lewis asks incisive questions about the relationship between the universal and the particular, between sex and gender, and sameness and difference. In so doing it rejects both an economistic reading of macro processes and an individuated reading of relations at the micro level. Ultimately it is a provocative book: for it provokes both thought and action.” (Tithi Bhattacharya, Purdue University)“At a time when Marxist politics is struggling more than ever against the current, queer Marxist scholarship is enjoying a slight, startling, heartening resurgence. Lewis’s The Politics of Everybody is a major contribution to the trend.” (Europe Solidare Sans Frontières)“[A] thought provoking and original text.” (Critical Social Policy)

Humane, incisive, good capsule histories of relevant concepts and movements. Highly recommended, enlightening and inspiring. Helps greatly to grasp complex fields!

Holly Lewis did an excellent job synthesizing debates and the history of ideas between and within queer theory, Marxism, and feminism, as well as the historico-material reality of sex and gender. Highly recommend.

Lenin got on the train in 1917. In 1940 Edmund Wilson published his story of the century of socialist and utopian thought which the revolutionary rode To the Finland Station. Edmund was looking back romantically and a Princeton man younger by five or ten years already had reported with great sympathy and understanding from the Soviet Union about the corrupt and fundamentally rotten society that would fall if we contained it.I grew up in the United States built by George Kennan's memos and when I came back from my own time behind the curtain I read the Mars novels of Kim Stanley Robinson, five or ten years older than me, the student from freshman year through doctorate of our looming Marxist thinker Fredric Jameson at one of our great new Cold War universities. For me in the 1990s the novels were an already antique account of fifty Americans fifty Soviets, born in the 1980s, all scientists, deliberately screened of any politics, who journey about ten years from now to the Red planet which they turn Green then Blue over two hundred years while replicating the whole span of human thought about governance in a world overtaken by capital.Vladimir and Edmund and George and Fred and Kim and I all knew dozens of people from all over the world who had lived some great 20C adventure of trying to make life better for all, for everyone, all the time. Things have so changed for better and worse that you may not know any at all.I am not entirely sure that this woman Holly Stevens, if that is how she lives, really knows that many old-timers especially foreigners. But her command of ideas, engaging with those of others to state her own, is bracing. The reader is right there on the train with her rolling to meet history. I myself am an ideologist of capital, a liberal, an anti-communist, a second-wave feminist at best, impatient with queers who dress and talk alike and ascribe all manner of meaning to my personal appearance and choice of word. But this author and I are squarely on the same page, talking about things as they are. Her sections on what Richard Rorty could possibly be talking about and likewise post-colonialists are like listening to myself in much better humor. The book ends with a call for solidarity that is both with those you disagree with about this and that and against those you must together deal with now in order to survive, leaving no one excluded or ignored whether as friend or foe. Terrific book.

Lewis takes a thorough understanding of Marxism and projects it through very readable text to illuminate the intersectional nature of the title concepts. In particular this text is helpful discourse for the transgender community looking to understand intersectional and class contexts.
