About the Author

Garry Martin, a native Manitoban, attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship, where he received the BA degree. He then attended Arizona State University for the MA and PhD degrees. Garry returned to Manitoba in 1966 and taught in the Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba until his retirement at the end of 2008. He is currently a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the U of M, and he continues to supervise graduate students, teach part-time, and write and publish. He has co-authored or co-edited 8 books and over 150 journal articles on various areas in behavioral psychology. His book, Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It, with Dr. Joseph Pear, first published in 1978, is used as a primary text at many universities in 14 countries and various editions have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean. His research on behavioral training technologies for improving the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities and children with autism has been supported continuously by the Medical Research Council of Canada, and now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for the past 32 years. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences around the world. He has supervised 38 Masters theses, and 32 PhD theses at the University of Manitoba, and has received numerous honors and awards, including induction into the Royal Society of Canada. At the 2010 Annual Convention of the Canadian Psychological Association, Garry received the CPA Education and Training Award, the most prestigious education and training award the discipline confers in Canada.   Dr. Joseph J. Pear, Professor of Psychology at the University of Manitoba, received the B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University. A fellow of Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) and Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Pear has done both basic and applied research. His early applied work was with children with developmental disabilities at the St. Amant Centre, where he founded the Behaviour Modification Unit (now the Psychology Department) in the early 1970s. More recently, he developed Computer-Aided Personal System of Instruction (CAPSI), an instructional program based on the Keller Plan. CAPSI is an award winning program that is being used to teach a number of courses at University of Manitoba and at several other universities in Canada and the United States. It is also a research tool that Dr. Pear and his graduate students use to research the teaching and learning dimensions of university education. Dr. Pear has also done basic research with pigeons and fish using a tracking system that he developed. In addition to Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It with Dr. Garry Martin, Dr. Pear has written two other books: The Science of Learning and A Historical and Contemporary Look at Psychological Systems. He has also written numerous research articles and two encyclopedia articles: “Psychological Systems” in The Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology (Fourth Edition) and “Physiological Homeostasis and Learning” in Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning. Martin and Pear's handbook is in its tenth edition. I have purchased 3 previous editions and in the process saw how their approach to behaviour modification evolved. The book should be useful for anyone who deals with behaviour that may need modification (e.g. teachers, coaches and clinicians); it is not only about behaviour therapy (although the book should supply clinicians with a firm theoretical foundation for the latter.I found that, like previous editions, the 10th edition describes behaviour modification well. Martin and Pear clarifies the theory behind behaviour modification in a way I find easy to read and comprehend. They do it so well that one may think you know more about the topic than you actually do. A set of questions at the end of each chapter will reveal the extent to which one has grasped the material covered in that chapter. The questions are not followed by answers - the answers must be sought in the text.Topics are neatly arranged into easily managed ("bite size") chapters. The authors often use practical examples to demonstrate theory and practice. I have used previous editions (and this one) as source book for self-teaching as well as for teaching and training students. Although behavioural approaches do not sit well with all clinicians (and theorists) the empirical evidence for the efficacy of behaviour modification (and behaviour therapy) cannot be ignored.

First off, a lot of these negative reviews seem to be from students forced to read the book and weren't interested in the first place or they are about the packaging and highlights (which, as we all know should not be reviewed on the product page).If you are, like me, in a Master's program for clinical psychology (i.e. to be a therapist)-- BUY THIS BOOK. If you are in an undergraduate psychology program--BUY THIS BOOK. If you are a parent of young children/teens or future parent-- BUY THIS BOOK. If you are interested in improving your life (e.g. weight loss or any other kind of behavior change for self-improvement)-- BUY THIS BOOK.My point is--this book is very informative. The authors describe the pros and cons of the various types of reinforcemet as well as descriptions of plans and which work best in certain situations.And if you're considering an older edition (I had the 5th or 6th edition from my undergrad years), buy the 9th edition instead. I thought it was like a new book. The older ones are good but this was far better. It can be pricey but the international copy is about half the price (and is exactly the same besides the difference in British spelling). Well worth the change but if that option is unavailable and you are interested enough--get this book! It was worth the money for me and I think and hope it will be for you as well.Thank you, good luck, and enjoy.

This is a good aide to learning about DADGAD tuning. I have learned a great deal, but it is a little sparse for the price and seems poorly organized to me. I am overall pleased with it, and would probably buy it again, knowing what I know now, but you might want to research to see if this is the book you were looking for. Assumes some prior experience with the guitar.

This is a very detailed book about behavior modification. It literally traces the history of behavioral modification from its origins and progresses into actual techniques that can be used in a variety of setting. Some of the chapters are quite dense, yet interesting. There is a comprehensive summary and the authors do a wonderful job with breaking down large units of information into readable points. There is a useful guide for functional analysis provided. The behavior contract is generic, but a decent basis for an individualized one. Finally, many behavioral methods are explained in simple terms and there are numerous examples that illustrate their usefulness.

This book covers so much and so clearly. It is a serious introduction to an important topic. The chapters are so well laid out that a mature and/or perpetual student (I am both) can work through it without signing up for the course. People in the mental health professions have got caught up in neurological advances, solution-focused therapies, mindfulness and so on. A solid background in behavior modification is an equally important part of the picture.

Really easy to read and the chapters are very short. It easily explains the main theories of behavior modification and gives great examples. Also has an index and glossary section for easy referencing!

Dry, poorly formatted, strange ordering of subject matters.

If you want to understand how to handle mentally challenged or handi-capped persons, you will see how to moderate their fits of frustration and reduce negative tantrums. Very useful for parents with autism.

*Sigh* This graphic novel is a hot mess.The first issue focuses on Orc Dave. It is interesting and good worldbuilding, but it is also repetitive and tangential. Why include a flashback at what will be the beginning of a bound volume if it is only relevant to the rest of the volume in the tiniest way? Why not save it until you are actually going to tie it to the main storyline?But, to be honest, I would rather have read more about Orc Dave than the rest of the issues in this volume.The next issues sees the Rat Queens fighting a giant hypnotoad and…haven’t we seen this before? The greatest weakness of the comic is that it isn’t super interested in doing new things. The hypnotoad sequence ends with Betty the smidgen thief licking it. I know that Betty’s impulsivity (and drug use) are basic character traits, but to make such a stupid decision so important to the rest of the comic grates.The rest of the volume gets into the titular The Colossal Magic Nothing. I won’t get into it, because there is no way to explain it that makes sense and isn’t spoilery. With the big reveal at the end, I see what Wiebe was doing, but it winds up being a disjointed mess. I like the idea, but the execution leaves much to be desired.The artwork is good, with some cool visuals, but I wasn’t a big fan of the intentionally simplistic style adopted for some of the flashbacks and surreal sequences.

One of the oddest moments in the ongoing Rat Queens series is, without a doubt, the abrupt ending to volume three that separates magical half-demon Hannah from the rest of the group and her friends. The volume ended on a bizarrely depressing note and (aside from a single issue in #16 which is not included in any of the trade volumes) was immediately ignored and seemingly retconned out of the series in volume four. The series is at its best when it mixes drama with over the top humor and the soft reboot of volume four was a great way to reestablish that tone. Creator Kurtis Wiebe has said that volume three is still canon, but it was hard to see how... until now. The amazing new volume manages to redeem the seemingly weak link volume of the series by showing how the team managed to "save" Hannah from her dark fate, while also opening the door to some amazing new potential arcs. The book at first seems to be going down a similar dark and depressing turn (including a new villain who seemingly wipes characters out of existence) but the twist ending is a gut punch that shows how good Wiebe is with these characters. Owen Gieni remains a spectacular artist for this series (especially with all the past turn overs and behind the scenes issues with past contributors), especially during the sequences when the Queens start to trip and the art shifts styles to match their hallucinations.

Gah this story has turned into a hot tangled mess. And I understand that is not my story but I’m just not enjoying Rat Queens anymore. Which sucks because I LOVED vol 1 n 2 until I found out who did the art. Honestly this volume was just hard to read because of spoiler plot devices which made for a lot of “wtf is going on narratively” moments. It made it hard to enjoy the times where the Queens were being their awesome selfs and than not for plot purposes. I don’t how to describe it. Like obviously the story is serialized but it stopped feeling that way at the end of vol 3. How everything’s tied together in vol 5 is unsatisfiying to me, and still leaves us with a lot of questions. I just don’t know if I care enough to find out anymore.

I have been following Rat Queens since volume 1 and I am finding that the storyline is so random and disjointed that it is like badly written fanfiction - and the art varies between excellent and terrible. This volume has some good storytelling and backstory and then heads off into a mess where it seems that the writers are trying to be cleverer in their storytelling than the reader wants or needs - and/or than they are capable of telling. Hopefully Volume 6 gets better - but the series has been so uneven that I have no clue. Maybe they are writing the plots using random rolls of dice ?

This volume teaches the Rat Queens about the consequences of their previous actions. Each queen gets their own story and moment to shine. While I enjoyed the character development, I am not sure what effects, if any, this will have on later stories. The ending left me confused about what had just happened until I re-read the title and decided a colossal magic nothing just happened.

It was confusing towards the midddle, as I didn't know where the story was going. But the ending made some things clear. You should read the previous books before jumping into this one.

Rat Queens continues to be the BEST ensemble book on the market. This volume is heavy on the Orc Dave backstory and pulls at a few heartstrings before diving right back into one of the funniest storylines of the series that stems from licking a frog and I'll just leave it at that. Great book!

I wish this book was recommended for business school. It would have made studying for exams much easier. The best parts about the book are:(1) Descriptions and examples of various financial instruments(2) Insights into the trading process(3) A look into back office functionsA lot of the knowledge from this book cannot be derived in one course at school, and most schools do not teach about the backdrop behind the markets. Overall, a very useful book for business students, traders, bankers, and anyone interested the markets or finance in general.

The topics suggested by the title (settlement, etc) are well addressed, but the first half of the book is dedicated to marketplaces and here the book comes up short. Many recent market developments, even those that were in place at the time of writing, appear to be inadequately or inaccurately addressed. Examples:ATSes/ECNs are much more center stage than the book would suggest and are not sufficiently discussedHybrid market mechanics are not discussed muchDark pool liquidity is not addressedOptions market making is not addressed beyond a single paragraph that sheds no light into how Citadel et al make continuous markets electronicallyAnd unfortunately, given that the major development of Reg NMS took place after the book, this makes the marketplace info even less useful.

I enjoyed reading the book. I learned a lot on the sections entitled "Products That We Offer", "The Marketplaces and Order Management" and "The Trade-Processing System". I highly recommend this book!

I bought this book as someone recommended me reading this to understand the trading and behind the scenes stuff. It is easy to follow and very detailed, but of course very old and now we have everything computerized. This book was written before the technology times. For $4 it is not bad.

This book is being used a textbook for my UNIX Shell Programming class. I believe it is really well written and gives a quick and efficient overview of UNIX scripting. This book is not for a complete novice. To appreciate this book, you definitely need at least some experience maneuvering around a UNIX or Linux terminal. It also doesn't hurt to have a firm understanding of programming concepts like variables and control structures. The book gives some great examples but on occasion you will have to do some additional research on the web to fill in some blanks. This is to be expected as UNIX is very powerful and feature filled and covering it all would take a book much thicker than this one.

Let me start by saying that most of the Unix tools like sed, awk, regular expressions, even vi, deserve their own specialized books and there are excellent books on these subjects.This is the only book you need as a general foundation to overall Unix shell environment. It is more convenient to start with this book and then dive deeper with the help of books like "Learning VI", "Mastering Regular Expressions". Yes awk is not covered, but it is not a big loss since awk was kind of not the part of native tools and it most definitely needed its own book to master as well as Perl.Then after you are done, most definitely for a daily use obtain "Unix Power Tools"This book is excellent for two audiences.For beginning programmers new to Unix. It should be their only general purpose Unix book, followed by specialized books. Also it serves to veterans that were away for a while from Unix and need just to brush-up very quickly without going to minute details of every tool.I for one, used this book as part of both audiences. I got acquainted with Unix with help of this book as well as refreshed my knowledge a year ago after long hiatus.

This is my second copy. I made the mistake of loaning out the previous copy, and it grew legs and disappeared. They got the old edition, and now I have the new one. "Unix Shell Programming" is loaded with good information. I only get to write shell scripts once in awhile, and sometimes I really need the book as a reference to refresh my memory. And, there are plenty of examples in the book. Great for newbies, and great reference for us old-timers.

This third edition is still based on the classic UNIX shell programming book Kochan put out in the late eighties. The benefit of this edition is that it includes POSIX standard support for constructs supported by the Bash and Korn shells. It is no longer restricted to the Bourne shell.There are many thoughtful insights appearing throughout the book, which makes it an excellent reference book. If using it as a text book, it is a little slow getting into the actual programming; you may find yourself bogged down in regular expressions that are covered in chapter 4.Overall, this is one of the better books I have seen on Shell Programming.

A clear and concise intro text for beginners. Wording is kept short clear and to-the-point. Examples are very clear. Exercises are not tricky and test your plain knowledge of what you covered. Chapters are short. It is clearly a beginner oriented text and is not intended for advanced users.

Book is great. Great examples and good reference for class with a subpar instructor. Shipping was okay I ordered about three weeks before the fall semester began and received it a week and a half into class. Thankfully I was able to borrow from a friend in that time frame.

This is one of the best text books I've ever read. And I mean EVER. I have never had a text book that has kept my interest over a single chapter, let alone several chapters in one sitting. Kochan and Wood really get their point across in a subject that can otherwise be dry and boring. They really bring it to life. I love this book!

Great unix book. I had little unix experience and the book was just right for me. I've only read the first 4 chapters but have picked up a lot already.
