Review

"Today, American democracy is threatened. Political fundraising--and the power it awards the big funders--has come to dominate Congress as never before. Congressman Buck's book is an important exposé that should incite real action for change, both on Capitol Hill and in congressional districts throughout the land." --Bill Bradley, former U.S. senator, New Jersey "It's rare to see any politician really shed light on just how corrupting Washington can get. It is even rarer for a sitting member of Congress to do it. Congressman Ken Buck offers a refreshing take on his time in Washington, how the culture in Washington incentivizes a corrupt status quo, and how the American people can change things. This is an eye-opening read." --Erick Erickson, host of Atlanta's Evening News with Erick Erickson and co-author of You Will Be Made to Care: The War on Faith, Family, and Your Freedom to Believe "Congressman Ken Buck is a strong conservative with a courageous record of standing up to the bipartisan corruption in Washington. He is a friend and a warrior for liberty, fighting to defend the Constitution and restore power to the American people." --Ted Cruz, U.S. senator, Texas "In this pull-no-punches explanation of what's wrong with Washington, Ken Buck tells it like it is. Every American who wants to drain the swamp should read this book." --Mike Lee, U.S. senator, Utah "Congressman Ken Buck pulls back the curtains of Congress to deliver this must-read for anyone who wants to actually drain the swamp in Washington--including President Trump. If you love freedom and liberty, you'll love how my friend Ken exposes the arm-twisting and back-room deals in the Capitol, then offers constitutional solutions for Americans to take their country back!" --Mark Levin, New York Times bestselling author and host of the nationally syndicated radio show, The Mark Levin Show

Congressman Buck offers details and examples of the tricks played, lack of oversight, lack of will or arm twisting, and more happening in congress, bureaucracy, and executive branch that should have everyone paying closer attention. There are suggestions and reference materials. Read and share the message with others.

I always knew things in DC were a mess. I thought it was just partisan gridlock. Wrong! It is a perversion of everything you always knew about how our government is supposed to work. Do you believe you have representation in Congress? No, you do not. Do you believe congressmen wrangle out a budget? No, they do not. This book is a long list of things that don't work the way they are supposed to in ways you never get to hear about. These are not topics that show up in the news. Another reviewer complains about a lack of proposed solutions. In this case, they are obvious. Want a solution? How about following the rules?

Everyone should read this book, no matter what your political affiliation is. The book makes it clear how the culture of Washington needs to change. The author is Republican but he pulls no punches on how his party contributes to the problems.

Easy Read... A real eye opener! Really lays out what is wrong and adds a couple suggestions, amendments and ethics changes.. I am buying a book for my congressmen (mentioned in the book).. Really lays out the hows and why's to the questions we all have about why nothing ever changes with every vote... WOW GET THIS BOOK!

This is an excellent book that details the immoral, unethical and corrupt behavior of many of our elected politicians in Congress. The book focuses on the actions of Republican leadership in the House of Representatives, since that is where Congressman Buck sits, I suspect there is plenty of sleaziness on both sides of the aisle as well in the Senate. The sad thing about books like this is they attract readers who already agree with the authors' premise. The writer is preaching to the choir. Both Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives should be seething with moral outrage over Congress's unwillingness to make the tough decisions and do what is in the best interest of the country. The authors' solution is for the states to petition for a convention to draft Constitutional amendments for items like congressional term limits and a balanced.budget. This method has never been successfully used.to amend the Constitution. All amendments have been introduced and passed by congress before going to the states for ratification. It will require a nationwide grass roots effort to make this happen.

First the disclosures. Ken Buck is my congressional representative and I voted for him in both of his campaigns. I am also a lecturer on political science who teaches courses on congress. Finally, I don't usually read these type of political commentary books, but was intrigued after hearing REP Buck on local radio.Having said that, this is two books. The first half is good tell all about the current norms of congress. This is the better half. Most congressional memoirs are not published until the member is out of office. And then they tend to be a recounting of the members time or a collection of their speeches (a way to bypass campaign contribution limits). Taking a completely different direction, REP Buck goes into the details of the money game within Congress. Unlike most accounts which is how leadership uses money to increase their power, he shows how leadership uses committee assignments to garner money for the party in what can only be described as a massive extortion scheme. The second book is the normal listing of how to change things in Washington. None of these are particularly new. Most have been kicking around Washington for a number of years with little or no success. So I recommend you read the first half and scan the second part.

Buck is a congresman from COLO and is known as an honest and ethical person as opposed to Cory Gardner and Michale Bennett - CO senators who are so corrupt they rot when they walk and talk. This book names names, gives details (some "cardinals" should be named) cites events and shows the dirty corruption that exists in BOTH parties. Buck mainly focuses on GOP as he is a GOP and knows it better but come election time, those RINOS and corrupt self serving slugs in congress that serve only themselves should fell our wrath! This book makes the need for a CONVENTION OF STATES needed ASAP and term limits on congress! Too much power are in the hands of those who could not care less about Americans and only about themselves. This is a 5 STAR book - get it. You will NOT regreat it! THEN GO VOTE!

Congressman Buck has done a great service to us all by exposing the inside game of the DC Swamp. MAGA will be a continual effort by all Americans...Trump will never make it alone, especially with career politicians undermining him at every turn...The Freedom Caucus gives both Trump and us a fighting chance...let's take it!!

From the Inside Flap

He's a boy called Jew. Gypsy. Stopthief. Runt. Happy. Fast. Filthy son of Abraham. He's a boy who lives in the streets of Warsaw. He's a boy who steals food for himself and the other orphans. He's a boy who believes in bread, and mothers, and angels. He's a boy who wants to be a Nazi some day, with tall shiny jackboots and a gleaming Eagle hat of his own. Until the day that suddenly makes him change his mind. And when the trains come to empty the Jews from the ghetto of the damned, he's a boy who realizes it's safest of all to be nobody. Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli takes us to one of the most devastating settings imaginable--Nazi-occupied Warsaw of World War II--and tells a tale of heartbreak, hope, and survival through the bright eyes of a young orphan. So moving, raw, emotional! The story of a young boy growing up during a very bad time, World War II, in Warsaw. He was orphaned at such a young age, he doesn't even know his own name, nor remember his parents. This story isn't the first I've read about the Holocaust. I have read a few non-fiction stories in college, watched a handful of documentaries, a couple of movies too. But Mr. Spinelli nailed this one! You feel as if you are there, witnessing the events first hand. You feel for these characters with everything in your being. You feel their happiness, their sorrow, their fear, their hatred, their confusion. It will be forever added to my favorites list. I can't describe this book adequately and do it justice. You just have to read it!

This is a historical fiction set in [mainly] Warsaw Poland, that uses many facts and events of the time period. I highly recommend this book. With the assistance of a gorwn-up, younger readers can appreciate and learn from the subject matter and hopefully come to sympathize with anyone who is unjustly oppressed or mistreated. The main character is a young, destitute, orphan boy who has no certainty of his identity (name, ethnicity, etc) and his daily life of surviving in the city. The story begins just before the Nazi invasion/occupation of warsaw. Poland. Shortly after, he witnesses the subjugation of the Jews of the city and their forced segregation to the ghettos, then their eventual removal by freight train (to send them to the concentration or death camps). The character's child innocence and lack of common knowledge (and current events) brings a third-person point of view to the story, as the reader is taken along with him as he gains knowledge and identity.

This book captivated me. My son loved it and wanted me to read it. I promised him one night that I would if he would read a chapter of a book I liked. Needless to say, I couldn’t put this down and devoured the book this weekend. Very well written...

This book takes place during the times of the Holocaust. Having read Jerry Spinelli novels in the past, it didn't surprise me that the main character was a young, somewhat innocent boy and that the novel is in first person. Overall I wish I would of read this book when I was younger. Spinelli serves as a great young adult writer, and this book is best suited for someone in middle school when they are just learning about the holocaust. This novel highlights a unique perspective with a light theme of how the holocaust impacted everybody in Germany; without the gruesome details. Beyond that, this still can be a great quick pleasure read for all ages. However, out what i've read from Jerry Spinelli, I recommend Maniac Magee over Milkweed without a doubt. The character development and characteristics in this novel was on point. Each character remained consistent and the details of each person's identity gave life to the story. The main character, Misha has a unique perspective from being raised on the street with little to nothing to call his own. Once the Nazis (or Jackboots as Misha called them) gained power, Misha was able to use his skills to help others close to him and himself. Compared to other Holocaust novels, this novel has less action and a lot less war battles than the average story. However, Milkweed still remains captivating and another Young Adult hit from Jerry Spinelli.

Milkweed is the best book I've ever read that deals with the Nazis, Hitler, the concentration camps, the fear and the reality of torture and death to the Jews during this reign of terror. It is written so any older child can understand it, and yet it captured my attention from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down. My 12 year old, who IS NOT a history buff and doesn't even like to read, never has trouble remembering the Jackboots, the children stealing food to keep from starving, and the trains pulling away while loved ones held their arms out to each other for the last time. MILKWEED is a totally accurate portrayal of the horrors the Jewish people lived and died in under Hitler's rule, yet it is presented in a fictional way that children can understand. Don't miss this one. Thanks Amazon for putting Milkweed out there for all to read.

This is a very good book to use with younger students, but the ending isn't strong. I suspect the warm sentimentality is supposed to smooth over the ending.

A friend recommended this book and I'm just so glad that I took her advice. It is the story of a young Polish boy during WWII in Warsaw who has been separated from his parents, gypsies, traveling in the countryside. The author tells the story of the Warsaw ghetto through his eyes in a remarkable way.I loved the storytelling and found it a truly unique and powerful book.

My son's 6th grade class read this book in school and they were enthralled by it. After completing the book my son was emphatic that my husband and I read it too. We're so glad we did! The book was outstanding and kept us engaged from start to finish. Milkweed is a must read that set the stage for a very insightful dialog about the atrocities of the Holocaust. Sensational book! Don't pass it by!
