I really love the book. Its a great resource for future research I want to do in arts education, however as a critique I must say is that the school and students chosen are not an honest representation of the arts programming in this this country. I love that they chose a utopian set of teachers and students, but that still leaves me to see how this process/ belief system/philosophy will work in my setting--alternative education. Where in reality I have kids who hate art, sit on their phones, are angry at the world, have anger management issues, etc. etc. In some ways the book reminds me of PBIS--all the samples are of the students/communities that are "wanting" to participate. I guess I will just do my own research on the poor, disenfranchised communities that need the knowledge of the 8 habits of mind--because I think those elements are spot on with what we need as creative people--and what we do in our creative processes. I know that my students, who are the lowest of the low, can definitely benefit from the habits. I will have to create a plan that will support programs with no money, no support and few great teachers that have to run a program literally alone. Because I know there are great teachers, teaching artists and leaders out there, that would like to implement this thinking in their own programs but really do not know how to even start as they are overwhelmed with all the demands of their job.

This book is necessary for any artist teacher to have in their collection. I revisit this book often to not only guide my own studio practice but sharpen how I approach teaching art, and instilling a positive studio practice for my students. Makes great points on why art education is necessary for the development of the whole person and not just in relation to other subjects taught in school.

This is an excellent book - well researched about art education and studio practice. I refer to it a lot as an art specialist. Excellent resource for advocacy and what the arts teach our children. Not about what the arts bring to other subjects either. Just the arts. Recommend without reservation.

This book is by one of my professors at the college I go to. The book is very dense but has excellent theory behind it. It explains, in depth, why an art education is so essential developmentally for students - and it does this by talking about what art itself teaches. People often try to talk about why "art is important because it'll make people more creative in their english classes" or something similar - justifying it because the core subjects that are in the standardized tests may benefit from it. But this book speaks as to why an art education is important in and of itself, and what sorts of core objectives art teachers should have in mind when designing lessons and curriculum. I would recommend this book to any art educator.

Excellent resource for teaching students about the creative process. This provides the foundation for how to document students learning through choice based teaching.

I teach elementary art so this book is a bit above my students level (it focus' on high school classes) but much of their information and observations transfer to any age. This book is packed with information and is unique in that it observes real classrooms to understand and create theory - the opposite of the usual education theory. If I had a pre-service art teacher program I would require this book it is a great way to think more carefully about your classroom and how you teach.

great book with practical concepts and arguments that support art education in the schools.

I love this book - I heard about it at the Project Zero summer institute and ordered it immediately. It's a fascinating read and I encourage all educators to read it.

Review

"Dr. Taylor’s words shed light on a very dark experience and the reader is led out of the darkness by his frankness, his humor, and most of all his spirit “alive within me.” His penetrating and pleading comments related to care giving cause the reader to take a deep breath, pause, and move forward with much greater insight into the complexity of these emotional relationships. Are these innovative words asking too much of the reader? I think not. We have been shielded too long from the mysteries of Alzheimer’s disease; these fresh words compel us to shed our misperceptions and enter into the world of those who command our attention. Through Dr. Taylor’s beautiful language and poignant reflections, we approach some clarity about the long neglected and misunderstood phenomenological experience of those living with Alzheimer’s disease." (Reviews 2001-01-01)"This is not an ordinary book. It is an extraordinary collection of anecdotes, ruminations, insights, comparisons, literary allusion and blinding insights. Be prepared to be challenged. Be prepared to reflect on your own human failings and joy at not having Alzheimer's disease. But most importantly, be prepared to read this book." (Dementia Journal (UK) Reviews 2001-01-01)"Such a personal telling of a tale . . . Part Eric Berne, part Henry Fonda in On Golden Pond, part the final movement of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, this work moves one to tears." (Doody's Review Service Reviews 2001-01-01)How poignant [these essays] are in expressing life with AD. [This] is a perspective I had not heard before and the insight is invaluable to me as a caregiver for my dad." (Reviews 2001-01-01)"After reading this book I have come to the conclusion that this is perhaps the most important book in the field of dementia care ever written … Dr. Taylor writes with passion and humor about a wide range of topics that capture the experience of living with a diagnosis of "probable Alzheimer's disease" … These poignant essays come from the heart and the soul of a sensitive and intellectually gifted man who has become a national champion and advocate for the millions of people living with this disease." (Reviews 2001-01-01)"[These essays] have given me lots of insight as to what goes on inside my mom’s mind. It’s hard being on the outside trying to figure out what’s going on inside." (Reviews 2001-01-01)"Among the millions with this cruel disease, Richard is rare in that his preserved memory, language, and thinking skills made possible these essays about his experience of the disease. He offers valuable insights to family and professional caregivers seeking to uphold the dignity of all people living with the disease. A debt of gratitude is owed to him, his wife, and his family for refusing to go gentle into that good night." (Reviews 2001-01-01)"Richard is our canary in the coal mine. He is chirping, trilling, humming. His advancement through life’s thickets lead him inside, around, and back. His questions, yearnings, satisfactions, regrets, challenges, humor, and provocations are warnings we all must head." (Reviews 2001-01-01)"Written with sensitivity, humor, and passion, Alzheimer's from the Inside Out describes the author's sometimes bumpy, but always insightful, journey with Alzheimer's disease. Telling his stories in a series of informative vignettes, Richard challenges us all to be more authentic and work to make life better for persons with dementia--not tomorrow, but today!" (Reviews 2001-01-01)"I thought I understood what life was like for my Alzheimer's-affected parents-until Richard's story enlightened me with insight into an unimaginable world. Every family with an elderly loved one, and every medical professional who works with elders, should read this gripping and marvelous book!" (Reviews 2001-01-01)

While reading this book I learned that Richard Taylor passed away in July of this year (2015) as a result of cancer. What a courageous man he must have been to turn his devastating diagnosis into a project like this. I along with some of the other members of my family spend a great deal of time caring for my mother who is in the late stages of Alzheimer's. Mr. Taylor's essays touched many areas that we have experienced. But what is so powerful is that he gives insight into what my mother may have thought at various times during the history of her disease. I recommend this book to anyone who is caring for a victim of this terrible disease.

Thank You Richard, for sharing your story. I am currently a caregiver for my Aunt who is 72 years old & has dementia probably of the FTLD type. Your book has inspired me and I have learned more from you, than from any Doctor, Specialists etc. You have made a difference in my life as a caregiver. My Aunt is a wonderful compassionate person. We are extremely close to one another. She is my best friend! I treasure every moment with her and im with her just about every day. She is my hero! ❤️💜Im so very proud of my Aunt Judy.❤️

If you or anyone you know is dealing with a family member with Alzheimer's, please make yourself read this book and several others on the recommended list from Alzheimer's Foundation. It is a devastating illness, no cure, and one in which everyone becomes a "victim of this disease" as it affects everyone's time and quality of life. It is a personal tale told with truth and humor.

My husband may have early onset Alzheimer's and I was hoping for a credible insight. In reading the first few chapters, I couldn't get past the author's arrogance and poor attitude. I still haven't finished the book and may not.

One of the best books on the Alzheimer's experience that I've read. My spouse had early-onset Alzheimer's, and I'm constantly searching for books to help me better understand her experience. This one is in a class all by itself.

My Mother has Alzheimer's and this book was very helpful in helping me to understand how she sees and thinks about things. She isn't able to tell me what is going on in her mind at all. I learn the most when I listen to her talk to herself in the mirror. But this book, written by someone who actually was documenting how things were feeling to him, was very helpful. I have been able to get closer to my Mother now. I picked up several ideas on how to communicate with her since reading the book. This has been one of the most helpful books on Alzheimer's I have read. Another book that I really liked is "Still Alice."

This book was recommended to me 2 years ago when my mother got diagnosed with Alzheimers. I find what he says to be true. Richard is very verbal and bright and it still comes through in his diagnosis. What he says is very applicable, some of which I am already aware of from being around my mom and in Alzheimer's units (where I have worked for 5 years). "Look at reality" is reiterated over and over. I am growing to appreciate what Alzheimer's is teaching me. I loved getting an inside look at Richard's thoughts. I did alot of highlighting. I am getting the book for my sibblings.

Thank you, Richard Taylor, for putting your insights into words. Very helpful to me for understanding a little better how my spouse is experiencing the effects of Alzheimer's Disease. This book is most helpful for the caregiver, but some parts have been very helpful for my spouse with AD. I admire Richard and his family for getting this book published. Thank You.

Peter Tsouras, best known for his excellent alternative history books, gives us a work on a very neglected subject: warfare in pre-Columbian America. The author gives the reader a brief overview of the strategic picture in Central America at the time as well as the lay of the land. He begins with the Toltecs and their overarching superiority as a civilization as well as the legend of Quetzalcoatl - important since it has a vital role in the story of the later Aztec or "Mexica".Frankly, the author spends little time on the Maya. The focus of this book is on central Mexico. Although the reader must wade through often difficult to pronounce names and words, there's a lot of solid military history. The states of central Mexico were bellicose and expansionist - as well as having religions based on human sacrifice. This is a topic ignored by many historians and numerous television specials, leaving the reader with the impression that the Americas were peaceful utopias until the bad, bad white people came. The reality is diametrically opposed with bloodthirsty kings and emperors leading armies of highly skilled, valiant and disciplined warriors against those of their neighbors. The pre-Columbian Americas were violent places where empires and city states vied with each other, making alliances, absorbing territories of weaker states and making war for plunder or expansion. One thing the reader will note is the commonality with warfare in the West, in Asia and all other places in the world. Some things are universal: discipline, training, logistics, alliances, ruse, strategem, etc. Most of the book focuses on the most successful people we have extensive documentary evidence of: the Aztec or Mexica. They rose slowly from a weak vassal of great empires to conqueror of most of central Mexico. This rise was based on one thing - their skill at war. The Mexica rose by dint of their skill at war and ended up reversing their position as vassal into leader of an alliance that was almost unstoppable in warfare.Another thing apparent to the reader is the absolute savagery of the pre-Columbian peoples. At the end of the day, despite their achievements, they were bloodthirsty and genocide was a standard practice (though emperors often spared particularly wealthy or productive populations for their own profit). The Aztec were the pinnacle of slaughter, sacrificing tens of thousands in a single festival and using relays of priests to continue the slaughter as some would tire, others would take over. This is very much a military history with very little (but, still, there is some) culture, literature, architecture, etc. The illustrations are very good and give the reader an idea of what these people, battles and cities looked like. But, for a military-oriented book, there's little about their weaponry. I was dissatisfied with the descriptions of their weapons and armor, Photos of reconstructed weapons were very much needed. Also, there was very little about their fighting formations.Still and all, this is a fine book and a solid four stars that I do recommend to those interested - or just wanting a change of pace in their military history reading.

Very interesting. Even more so if it's true and or historacly correct. Well written and very readable.

Book

Very detailed with situations. Better than expected.

A great book for someone who is a beginner like me about mesoamerica better than any novel I could not put it down !! Never realized the bravery mixed with ferocity of the ancient Aztecs and Mayans

Very interesting reading; I have both the audio and digitial version - needed to SEE and HEAR the words in the Nahuatl language. Caustion: as a history book, there are alot of names and dates - could be overwhelming at first.

Absolutely loved this book - wish that it had a little more information on the Maya, but it is rich in history and knowledge. It is wonderfully and evocatively written.

Great illustrations!

The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations, by John McCain

Review

“Senator Lindsey Graham once described his friend John McCain as someone who would ‘run across the street to get in a good fight.’ McCain’s final battle came straight to him. I’m not talking about the one against brain cancer…I’m talking about the one against Donald Trump. He wages it in a forthcoming book, The Restless Wave...McCain has always believed, to his core, in sacrifice, honor and allegiance to something larger than oneself…Such grace is unimaginable from Trump. That’s why it’s so vital that McCain is using his waning time to model it.” —Frank Bruni, The New York Times"You can see McCain in this book struggling to reconcile himself to what his Republican Party has largely become…The six-term senator from Arizona slips in a few careful mentions of Donald J. Trump, and expresses concern about the rancor that has overtaken the country…He consistently returns again and again to what seems for him to be a core commitment: a fervent belief in American exceptionalism...his faith in his country’s beneficence remains undimmed." —Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times"In what may be his final public act, John McCain this month will publish a book that bequeaths us a rare gift....the volume does not burden us with a lot of high-minded advice based on lessons learned, nor does it pull us down into treacly memoir. McCain is still very much McCain....What he does offer, though, at this peculiar moment of our history, is far more precious: a reminder of the values and principles that our nation has long stood for, and a spur to us to recover from this unhealthy interlude and stand for them again. Without preaching, instead by recounting stories of battles won and (often) lost, McCain unspools something akin to a self-help manual for a country that has, at least for the moment, lost its way." —Fred Hiatt, The Washington Post“It should be required reading for anyone who wants to lead in a democracy.” —Senator Lindsey Graham, The New York Times  “History matters to McCain, and for him America is and was about its promise. The book is his farewell address, a mixture of the personal and the political. 'I have loved my life,' he writes. 'All of it.' The Restless Wave is a fitting valedictory for a man who seldom backed down.” —The Guardian, US"Remarkable....a book-length meditation on what it means to face the hard challenges of long life and the sobering likelihood of imminent death. John McCain’s valedictory message, at the booksellers under the title The Restless Wave, is a 400-page reflection on hardship, a homily on purpose, a celebration of life — and a challenge to Americans to live up to their values and founding principles at a time when both are in jeopardy." —The Boston Globe"This is not just a book that offers a vision of how politics might be done differently, it is essentially a blueprint for how to live a life well." —The New Statesman“In this thoughtful valedictory, [McCain] delivers…Unlike the previous six books McCain and Salter have composed together, this one wasn’t written for voters. It was written for history…With what time he has left, the “maverick” — an appellation he has worn throughout his career, at some times more comfortably than at others — is going to put country first and tell the truth…His book will be remembered for its genuine concern about the future of our republic and the West.” —James Hohmann, The Washington Post"McCain’s The Restless Wave coalesces a series of poignant and striking warnings of the perils facing the United States, from Russian aggression worldwide to an escalated American divide and partisanship fights to isolationist efforts and racism…He also expresses a theme of gratitude for living a life larger than he envisioned." —Stars and Stripes“Written in McCain’s plain-spoken, occasionally brusque manner, the senator and Vietnam war veteran…offers a wide-ranging appraisal of his own career, one marked by unrealized presidential ambitions and a lofty view of America on the international stage.” —The Guardian

Although John McCain has lately been the target of many brickbats from both Right and Left, any honest person has to give him the benefit of the doubt. And despite the hype that has preceded this book, it was not what I expected. Instead of attacks on his enemies, shrill denunciations of political stands he despises, or praise of himself and his allies, John McCain offers us his version of King Lear. He offers the thoughts of a man who, toward the end of his life, does his best to see clearly, whatever may have come before.McCain is part of a diminishing cohort of conservatives devoted to American exceptionalism. For McCain, American exceptionalism is found foremost in our stance outwards, toward the rest of the world. He wants both American interests and American moral virtues to be served, and the chief obstacle he sees to this now is not Trump (whom McCain attacks surprisingly little, though he does attack House Republicans quite a bit) but Vladimir Putin. McCain sees Putin as, if not evil incarnate, certainly a very grave threat to us, to Europe, and more generally to the liberal democracy embodied in both. Quite a bit of the book is taken up with discussing this problem, and McCain has also written several pithy opinion pieces, such as recently in the Wall Street Journal, making the same points. The overlap between those who believe in American exceptionalism and those Republicans opposed to Trump is pretty significant, but really, they are different things. McCain thinks that America’s best years are not necessarily behind us, and while things may not be perfect, there is a deep reservoir of ability and possibility in America, however it is made up at any given time, including by immigrants. This was, for the most part, also Ronald Reagan’s view, and the split on the Right today is, in large part, a dispute about whether Reaganism is still viable today. While he does not spend any significant time talking about Reagan in this book, McCain is very much in the Reagan mold, although it’s not clear whether that really has a future in today’s Republican party.Of course, as he is the first to note, he himself probably doesn’t have much of a future on this earth. That knowledge focuses his thought, and he is comes across as a man of courage ready to exit the stage. Part of that courage, combined with clarity, comes out in his admitting that the Iraq War was a mistake. Oddly, that puts him on the same page with Donald Trump, the only Republican candidate (other than Rand Paul) who took the same position. But there is a lot to be said for honesty, and it helps the reader believe McCain legitimately holds the other positions he takes in this book. That said, as I say, it’s not like this book is a political polemic. Much of the rest of the book is taken up with reminiscences, mostly fond, and all interesting. The Restless Wave is not an attempt to settle scores; it is the last public words, in effect, of a lion in winter. As he says, “I have loved my life. All of it.” Whatever his faults may be, McCain is a giant of a man, formed by a past age, and we will not see his like again.

I would highly recommend John McCain’s book “Restless Wave”.Big takeaways:He has many calls for bi-partisanship, regular order. Unilateral legislation is not acceptable. Compromise is hard, unglamorous but essential.McCain has always made pains to reach out with those that he might not agree with (Elizabeth Warren, Ted Kennedy, Joe Lieberman)America is exceptional BECAUSE of immigration, not in spite of it.Putin is an evil man. Equating US actions with that of the Russian is a false equivalence.Doing the moral thing and doing the practical thing do not have to be at odds. One of my favorite stories: McCain criticized President Obama after Obama did not order strikes on Syria after Assad used chemical weapons. Later, Obama invited McCain for a private one on one meeting to discuss his rationale, and to solicit McCain’s rational. Both sides were respectful, firm and cordial. In the end, neither side were swayed, but both sides walked away with a better understanding of the other side.As for tone, the book is a good mixture of pride, regret and wistfulness. He was more than willing to acknowledge his shortcomings, which is one of the reasons I have always liked himIt’s the way I would hope our leaders would act. I wish he was our president.I highly recommend.

I ordered this book before it was published because of my respect for John McCain. The book only reinforced my feelings. Although I am a Democrat and voted for Obama over McCain in 2008, I told all my friends back then I would have been fine if that election went the other way. John McCain believes in doing what is right for America first. His stories in the book were really eye opening, as most of us don't see this level of personal involvement from our Senators. In these times of political partisanship we need more men like him--on both sides of the aisles. This is a must read. If you choose not to read it because you believe McCain to be a RINO, shame on you. John McCain is a true American hero who should be respected by people of both parties.

I don't always agree with John McCain, but he is a true and honorable statesman. I admire his ethics and his desire to work across the aisle. I was, however, disappointed in his less than forthright praise of Sarah Palin's performance in their presidential campaign. In previous interviews he has indicated that choosing her for a running mate was a mistake. His choice was an attempt to broaden his appeal to Tea Party voters, and it backfired. He would have received more Democratic cross-over votes had he chosen a better informed and more moderate running mate. He will be sorely missed in our country when he leaves this earth.

I've admired Senator McCain since he was held captive in Vietnam. I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman from 1967 to 1970 and never serviced overseas. I followed his story through his captive to his release and then picked his life back up when he entered politics in As. I vividly remember how he handled himself through the Charles Keating situation - at that time I was deep into my banking career and spending much time in Texas and Arizona working out various commercial loan problems my bank had as of result of some of the financial ramifications of Reagans 1986 Tax bill. John accorded himself very well and I followed his point of view and agreed with his approach on the many issues he has cared about. Loved the way he was straight to the point !! He is a hero and will die a hero in my book. The book is a tribute to his beliefs and his love for our great country.
