For as long as this marvelous book has been in print, I am always appalled to find so many intelligent people ostensibly graced with a post graduate liberal education that have no knowledge of it. It is a comprehensive study of religion, myth, and their origins and how they are all intertwined in every society. Daunting in size, even in the abridged edition, it is singular in that the facts and conclusions are all based either on creditable ancient sources or mostly on direct study of primitive, isolated societies still in existence during Frazier's life. There is a minimum of speculation and a maximum of conclusion based on comparison of identical or very similar cultural beliefs and practices. The effect on literature alone is reason enough to read this book.

Yes, this is the abridged version, but it still is over 15k locations in the study of ancient ritual and magical practices. Different cultures and different locations perhaps, but so often humanity came to the same conclusions. It's really quite amazing. Having now read this, it's a reminder of how much great literature is out there that I had never read. The King of the Wood will definitely stay with me forever.Seriously, if you don't have this get it now.

In The Golden Bough, James George Frazer, an expert social anthropologist, explains the ancient origins of the world's myths, rituals, and religions. He shows the similarities between many cultures' strange superstitions, such as animal and human sacrifice, fertility ritual, community cleansing rituals, and others.He begins with the question of why, at Nemi in prehistoric Greek times, a warrior priest known as the King of the Wood kept his position by fighting for his life, which could be threatened at any time by his successor and murderer. By attempting to explain this ancient tradition, Frazer examines similarities between religious beliefs and shows how the belief in magic and the worship of nature was gradually transformed into the worship of religious kings and gods.Controversially, many elements of Christianity are included, such as Christ's crucifixion and the fact that many Christian holidays coincide with the dates of prehistoric pagan rituals. For the diligent skeptic of Frazer's ideas, I would advise reading the full, multi-volume edition, which includes the archeological evidence for the theories.This book is ESSENTIAL for the studies of mythology, religion, or anthropology.

I am re-reading this book. I had forgotten how easy the author's writing is to read. Although it's a 19th century book, the writing seems more modern. The Kindle version is very handy. If you haven't read it, this is worth reading. The legend the author researched and described is at the root of many traditional stories.

What else can I say except this is a classic - a treasure-trove of beliefs, rituals and traditions of "Magic" and "Religion" (and wherever the twain, and medicine, do meet). This is an all-encompassing reference book invaluable to those who were mesmerized by Greek mythology, entranced by the sylvan and nature beliefs and rituals of both ancient times and aboriginal practices. Certainly not written with any thought of "political correctness" (Frazer lumps most aboriginal humans - both past and Frazer's present day - as "barbarians" or "savages"), the reader must consider when this was written; yet, one will find terminology still used today (remember the movie "Practical Magic").

Product description is for the paperback Oxford University Press edition; this hardback is a 2013 version by Simon and Brown publishers. The binding is cheap plasticized cardboard (the image in the listing is not a dust cover, it is the book itself) and the paper is inferior and likely will turn brown in a few years. The printing covers most of the page from edge to edge with little of the white space that one is used to from quality publishers. As a lover of quality books with over 5000 hardback volumes in my library, I have never come across a piece of trash like this. It is an insult to Fraser and his work.

Although extremely lengthy and at times, dull, it is a must for students of religion, anthropology, and history. Clearly shows man's evolution through myth\magic, religion, and science. Fascinating!

James Frazer's, "The Golden Bough," is a must read for anyone interested in the comparative study of religion, folklore and magic. This abridged version of a multi-volumed master work will open your eyes to the commonality amongst traditional religious beliefs and practices around the world. One warning though: This book may cause an acute existential crisis for Bible heads. If you can't recognize pagan themes and rituals in the old and new testaments -blood sacrifice in particular- then you're better off sticking to bible tract comic books. I also love the cover art of Turner's "Aeneas and the Sibyl."

If Hunter S. Thompson wrote a hunting book, it would be like this. It's like he set out to write a book about turkey hunting but is constantly side tracked by some wacky thought. Turkey hunters are a kind of crazy crowd to begin with so it's not entirely out of pocket, but you'll definitely feel your head spin at times wondering where the heck he's going. I'm really not sure I gained any more insight on bird behavior or tips to hunting turkeys, but it's an entertaining read if you like the ramblings of old nutty hunters.

I've been a turkey hunter for the last 18 of my 55 years. Like Tom I am blessed to live in Alabama where the eastern wild turkey is abundant and the opportunities to hunt him almost unlimited. As with all turkey hunters I know, my spirits always rise at the approach of the spring season in March and remain high until the close of the turkey season on April 30th. I of course spend most of the month of May in withdrawals remedied only by setting a countdown on my calendar marking the days until the opening of the season next year. I'm a turkey hunter. Recently while admiring my collection of hunting and outdoor books a friend and colleague who is without a doubt the best turkey hunter that I have ever personally known ask, " where's the Tenth Legion?" I had no idea what he was talking about and told him so. Amazed, he said, "you know..The Tenth Legion....Tom Kelly....you're kidding me...right? When I told him that I really had never read anything about a tenth Legion that didn't involve Rome or a Roman army he insisted that I read what he then described as "the best...mind you, not among the best, simply, 'The Best' book on the subject of turkey hunting ever written".Now I have. He was wrong only in that Tenth Legion may be "The Best" hunting book of any kind that I have ever read. And then, maybe it's not even a "hunting book" at all. Maybe it's a book about life posing as a hunting book just to get us started turning pages.Thank you Col. Tom for this wonderful work. It's certainly no wonder that it continues to be so popular even after more than 40 years in print. My great hope is that I can personally meet you one day and have a minute....or a week to discuss the last chapter.You will forever have a friend and kindred spirit in Prattville!B. After spending the last two years hunting high pressure territory in Alabama, I can relate. The humor is splendid and sharp. It's almost like going to turkey hunter therapy to know others have the same addiction as you. Mr. Kelly makes you feel accepted into a secret honor society while sharing the exploits only a turkey hunter understands. A must read for the afflicted.

Extremely easy read, this is the real deal. If you're a turkey hunter, this book will have you reading it again and again. Then you'll recommend it to your fellow turkey hunters. Portions had me laughing out loud and most others had me relating 100%.The Colonel captures the essence of turkey hunting. I highlighted numerous sentences, passages, pages for revisit.Highly recommended!

I love this book! Not many books have the depth that this book has. It is a book that will gender thought.

Even though I hunt turkeys in Michigan, not Alabama, every chapter resonates with my brief experience, and excites me in anticipation for the next season.

Fantastic book. Reminded me alot of the writing styles of early 1900's outdoorsmen like Kephart and Jaeger. Well worth the read especially if you are a turkey hunter

What a great read, especially for the die-hard turkey hunter. A beautiful picture is painted that accurately depicts the splendor and emotional rollercoaster of pursuing the wild turkey. It was written 40+ years ago, but reads as though it was published recently. The only downside is that I'm now ready to roll for turkey, but the season is still 10 weeks away. Highly recommended!

I am chronically acquainted with this book and bought it for a friend in north Florida. He very much liked the Tenth Lesion; I have not talked with him about The Boat and may need to read it while I am down visiting him in March. Col Kelly has an excellent gift of a great sense of humor and at the same time, he has gift of making his humor like one is laughing with him and not at him, as well as vice versa.

Very intense and captivating story of the life events of Annahita. I read this book in 2 days (which it very rare for me), I had difficulty putting it down. It made me more aware that my challenges pale in comparison to that of many others. I don't know that I would/could have survived the troubles, terrors and abuse she endured. The power of the Gospel was demonstrated through the gift of a small bible (God's word) and how it effected her life. She was brought out of a very dark, oppressive, sinister religion into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It reawakened in me the importance of sharing the gospel (and scriptures) more fervently; communicating the free gift of salvation found in a relationship with Jesus Christ through whom I have also been saved.

From the get-go this book wrapped its storyline around me and wouldn't let go. From page to page, the suspense and story put my stomach in knots. I kept thinking "When are you going to get out of your situation? I wanted so bad to take Annahita away from her constantly downward spiraling circumstances and lead her to safety." I kept thinking of how to make things right on the natural level and was forgetting that only a supernatural "Force" was able to make things better.When all hope seemed to dissipate into thin air, God was/is there. Annahita wears the scars of a brutal life and gives hope to all of us who think we can't go any farther.This book will keep your attention and will keep you up at night well past your regular bedtime. Read this asap!

As a person blessed to have been born in the privileges of Western society I was drawn to Annahitas story out of gratitude. It seems fitting if we who are Christians claim to know the Truth that we allow Christ to open our minds & hearts to those who find him in darkest evil.

Annahita's life was miraculously spared from death and from lack of purpose over and over.She tells her painful story in obedience to Jesus who she now serves after discovering his love for her personally and for all people, including her enemies. Her forgiveness gives her complete peace and freedom from fear especially from those who are anti-Christian.

Only by God’s amazing love could this story happen. And only by His love could it be told. This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it to you. Please take the time to read it and investigate it’s truths. I believe you will be glad you did.

I couldn't put this book down until the end! I really love reading stories about conversions especially from Islam to Christianity, and for some reason have always been fascinated with Iran. Annahita's life and journey are truly miraculous, there is no doubt that God has had His hand upon her, she wouldn't be where she is today otherwise. Reading this book made me cry tears of gratitude for my many blessings and lack of true hardship as well as the freedom to follow Jesus. This book also strengthened my own faith and the belief that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Thank you, Annahita, for sharing your amazing story. God bless.
