While reading this book, you are not on your seat holding a book, you are living the events you are among the characters, I do not know what name to give this style but it is amazing! The moment I started reading this book I was its prisoner, I could not put it down, for three consecutive hours I was reading until I fell asleep. Considering it is a history book full of detailed events, it is never boring. I was eager to see if when I continued reading the next day, if it will be also as exciting, it was till the end.You will live the events of those days, the Ottoman art of war compared to the Europeans, the manufacturing of cannons, the logistics, army composition, new warfare guns and first use of Cannon battery formations for the first time in history, and their effect in the thousand years old walls of Constantinople, this vivid city that was in decline and disintegration which led to its defeat. The book is so eventful that it is impossible to put down!

So often it's hard, especially in the time period in question and when dealing with conflicts involving major world religions, to find a book that is completely unbiased in it's reporting of the subject matter. This book and this author are the exception to that rule. That to begin with was what I enjoyed about this book. Mr. Crowley's position on the subject at hand is that of objective reporter of historical events. There is no personal or religious/Western bias of any kind (Not that I know anything of his personal beliefs) in this book or any sense that Mr. Crowley belongs to a "side" in the subject matter. As for the subject matter itself, the book starts as a general overview of the emergence of Islam, it's conquest of the Arab world and it's previous conflicts with the Byzantines. It then generally covers the Byzantines history in the area over the previous 400 years and the way thier policies and mutual interactions led up the events to be covered. The bulk of the book is a straight forward military history of the battle and the seige, covering historical documents as well as personal accounts of the battle from individuals who fought it. It covers the blood and guts details that you would expect to find in a medieval battle, detailing atrocieties committed with no attempt to whitewash or excuse, but also no attempt to judge from a modern perspective. All in all, one of the most enjoying and easy to read books I've read in some time.

A superbly written account of the fall of Christian Constantinople to the Muslims in AD 1453. Constantinople was chosen by the Roman Emperor Constantine as his new Christian capital in AD 324. The city was situated on a triangular piece of land, surrounded on 2 sides by water. One current was too swift to allow ships to land and besiege the city. A massive chain blocked passage across the other waterway. The city's land side was protected by a wall with towers, first built by Anthemius in AD 413. When it collapsed after an earthquake, 16,000 citizens rebuilt the wall in only 2 months, adding a 2nd wall with towers and a moat.Constantinople stood as a Christian city for over 1,000 years and was virtually impregnable to attack as long as siege equipment was limited to the power of catapults. Mehmet II was the 21-year old sultan of the Ottoman Empire. With gunpowder, massive canons, and perhaps 50,000 to 80,000 troops, he besieged the walls with constant bombardments, always with heavy losses. His sappers attempted to dig tunnels under the walls to make them collapse, but they were repelled by Greek fire when the defenders placed bowls of water on the ground and located the digging through telltale ripples. During the day, the defenders pushed ladders off the walls, hurled down rocks and fire and hot oil on attackers, and shot bullets and arrows into the enemy. At night, the Turks would go forward to gather their wounded and dead. The defenders would go out to repair walls. The city was defended by the courageous Constantine XI and no more than 8,000 soldiers. During the final assault, Mehmet had only one body of fresh troops left. The Greeks were led by Constantine himself, and the Italians by Giovanni Giustiniani, a noble of Genoa, who voluntarily fought “for the advantage of the Christian faith” and who was utterly tireless and skillful in his defense of the walls. After Constantinople fell, it rejuvenated Islam to continue its jihad into the West. And the West was left to consider how its infighting and disunity helped lead to the fall of their great city. The author is an historian and researcher of the highest order, and an exceptionally engaging writer.

As somebody who enjoys reading about this era and ottoman history in particular this book was a godsend. Mr Crowley has such a massive talent for writing in way that is a pleasure to read but also very scholarly. I liked how Crowley tried to be as objective as possible and not take sides during the siege. He paints the whole picture showing the good and bad on both sides. This was one of the most important moments in all of history and I couldn't think of somebody better to write about it.

Although the book is technically well written, it approaches being a Muslim apologetic. Crowley all but ignores the impact of the of the Latin sack of the City in the 13th century and the devastating consequences of the Great Schism while at the same time down playing the "Holy War" aspects of Mehmet conquest. Finally, the author's contempt for Greeks is palpable, to his disgrace.

Absolutely riveting story of the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed the Conqueror. Crowley explains the dispute between the churches in Rome and Constantinople, the influence of trade and money (powerhouse Venice's decision not to intervene on behalf of Byzantium after hints from Sultan Mehmed that they would not lose their enclave in the new Istanbul), the genius of Mehmed in organizing his logistics and lines of communication prior to the invasion, and the touch-and-go campaign that saw morale changing on both sides on a daily basis.A must-read book.

Inner Paths to Outer Space: Journeys to Alien Worlds through Psychedelics and Other Spiritual Technologies, by Slawek Wojtowicz Ede Frecska

Review

“Those who regularly navigate the hyperspatial landscape that some have called the ‘tryptamine dimension’ have long suspected that the portals to inner and outer space may be one and the same. This book, a collaboration of the most cutting-edge shaman/neuroscientists working in this field, boldly explores this concept in a stunning tour de force.” (Dennis McKenna, Ph.D., coauthor with Terence McKenna of The Invisible Landscape)“The profoundest inquiries into the nature of reality and the mystery of consciousness are made possible by the psychedelics and other spiritual technologies explored in this astonishing, groundbreaking, and utterly revolutionary book. Written by the maestros of the field, it is exactly the right book at exactly the right time. I found it gripping, thought-provoking, incredibly informative, and--on top of all that--a hugely enjoyable read.” (Graham Hancock, author of Supernatural: Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind and Fingerprin)"This highly unusual book, Inner Paths to Outer Space, takes readers on a journey through the world of psychedelic drugs and other obscure paths to reach into our consciousness and then out of ourselves to journey to places unknown." (WomensRadio)"This book is a stellar overview of the latest in psychedelic theory. . . . Having this book is like getting your hands on the hottest underground philosophy book. It dares to link science and religion directly--not some wishy washy pseudo-theory, but hard evidence linking science and religion via psychedelics. . . . High recommended!" (David Kerr, reviewer, May 08)" . . . this book raises many fundamental questions about the nature of reality that have barely been asked in the scientific community, let alone answered, and I strongly urge all researchers of consciousness to read it." (David Luke, The Beckley Foundation, Oxford, UK, March 2009)"This book is an eye and mind opening exploration into a field that has been forced underground. The four writers give unique insights into the traditions of shamanism and psychedelic drug use. Taking a scholarly approach without being dry or in any way biased, Inner Paths to Outer Space succeeds on many levels." (Chard Currie, New Dawn, No. 114, May-June 2009)"Medical clinicians to literary scholars should read this book. . . . This work is so interesting that it is difficult to stop experiencing it. It leaves the perceiver wanting more as the subjects of this text are of quintessential importance to the human psyche. This book should be the paradigm for texts concerned with mystical themes; as it is not delimiting, and all of its authors do not pejoratively misrepresent transcendent human themes." (Dr. Ron Shane, reviewer, July 2009)"A remarkably interesting work, Inner Paths to Outer Space has pulled together a collection of threads into a theoretically grounded framework and although many of the ideas are, admittedly, speculative, the authors field an extremely well-structured argument. An important read for anyone with an interest in sci-fi, shamanism, and psychedelic consciousness and a great addition to the literature." (Psychedelic Press, UK, Feb 2010)“Outside of its more fantastic claims, Inner Paths to Outer Space is valuable for explaining the human propensity for spirituality on basic, cellular level. The drive to experience the mysterious springs at the heart of all great religious traditions, and delight in the mystery is revealed in the passion the authors have for their subject and in the beautiful visionary art the book also showcases. Highly recommended.” (Leni Hester, BBI Media: Witches & Pagans, September 2011)

VISIONARY PLANTS / PSYCHOLOGY               “Those who regularly navigate the hyperspatial landscape that some have called the ‘tryptamine dimension’ have long suspected that the portals to inner and outer space may be one and the same. I found it gripping, thought-provoking, incredibly informative, and--on top of all that--a hugely enjoyable read.”--Graham Hancock, author of Supernatural: Meetings with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind and Fingerprints of the GodsFor thousands of years, voyagers of inner space--spiritual seekers, shamans, and psychoactive drug users--have returned from their inner travels reporting encounters with alien intelligences. Inner Paths to Outer Space presents an innovative examination of how we can reach these other dimensions of existence and contact otherworldly beings. Based on their more than sixty combined years of research into the function of the brain, the authors reveal how psychoactive substances such as DMT allow the brain to bypass our five basic senses to unlock a multidimensional realm of existence where otherworldly communication occurs. They contend that our centuries-old search for alien life-forms has been misdirected and that the alien worlds reflected in visionary science fiction actually mirror the inner space world of our minds. The authors show that “alien” worlds encountered through altered states of human awareness, either through the use of psychedelics or other methods, possess a sense of reality as great as, or greater than, those of the ordinary awareness perceived by our five senses.RICK STRASSMAN, M.D., is clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule. SLAWEK WOJTOWICZ, M.D., is a medical oncologist working in the pharmaceutical industry in Edison, New Jersey, a science-fiction illustrator, and the author of Daydreaming. LUIS EDUARDO LUNA, Ph.D., is coauthor (with Pablo Amaringo) of Ayahuasca Visions and director of Wasiwaska: Research Centre for the Study of Psychointegrator Plants, Visionary Arts and Consciousness in Florianópolis, Brazil. EDE FRECSKA, M.D., is chief of psychiatry at the National Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Budapest, Hungary, and a contributing author to Psychedelic Medicine.

I realize that some folks, including a couple of reviewers here who awarded just a single star, might be disappointed in this book after finding a lot of material they had already read before, or at least were familiar with. However, I am going to go ahead an award this four stars because anyone who is confronting this kind of information for the first time should find this a 5-star read. It's important to point out that Dr. Rick Strassman is not the only or even the primary author of this book. Also included are Slawek Wojtowicz, M.D., Ede Frecksa, M.D. and Luis Eduardo Luna, Ph.D.I am familiar with the work of Strassman, and I did find some of his material here "nothing new" for the most part; however, the essays of the other writers, especially Frecksa, was for me a new look at the nature of consciousness, and especially the possible quantum structure of the brain on the nano-scale. Extremely interesting. For people who have never before heard about or read about the deeper implications of hallucinogenic compounds, synthetic or natural, on the nature of reality and consciousness, this book will be nothing less than an amazing revelation. Most of the material has a high scientific and academic standard, though it sometimes does get a little "New Agey" here and there -- but that's okay. All in all, a fascinating collection of the writings of distinguished researchers which I am happy to recommend.

My favorite part of this book was commentary on the book of Genesis. I, too, saw a serpent in my vomit on ayahuasca. One of the articles discussed the serpent in the Garden of Eden as if the word "serpent" is overdetermined with three separate layers of significance, each of which suggests a serpentine entheogen such as ayahuasca. The serpent will "open your eyes" with knowledge (gnosis even), to become "like God, knowing good and evil." There is no reason to be alarmed; the issue is complex, not really Satanic in any disturbing sense.

Enlightenment in a spiritual yet scientific book. If God is love, you become one with God because you love without expecting something in return. Then life changes from nightmare into heaven.

This is my first Amazon review and the book is definitely worth taking some time to share my thoughts. After having watched the Spirit Molecule documentary, I was interested to delve deeper into the possibility of accessing unseen worlds and challenge my concept of consciousness. The book covered a broad range of topics relevant to psychedelic journeys, which made me even more interested in acquiring additional knowledge on the subject. At times, I felt that I didn't want to entertain the implications of some of the inferences drawn by the authors to save my sanity. Particularly, the reptilian humanoid creatures that appeared in some cosmonaut anecdotes who gave the impression that they had been expecting them.Overall, a great collection of works by credible and great minds.A highly recommended read for those brave enough to start testing their basic assumptions about reality.

This book is not your typical "stoner type" purporting the transcendent information that can be rendered from the adventures that are experienced when utilizing the ontological (as I like to call them) technologies of entheogens; some may be relieved, but do not get comfortable yet, because what this is, is your SCHOLARLY and EXPERT types purporting the transcendent information that can be rendered from the adventures that are experienced when utilizing the ontological technologies of entheogens. I have to say that I am elated to see scholars that actually utilize theirs credentials to go against the grain of the Establishment and pursue something that is novel and innovative, rather than adhering fervently to what they have been spoon fed from textbooks; it is indeed those individuals that push the paradigm of what is conventional, and that fringe screams the taboos that shatter the virgin ears of those drones that wish to adhere to what they have been assigned-the ideological war begins. This book is not all about drug induced altered states of consciousness; it digs down deep into the ontology of the human race and what it means to be sentient beings. The book itself should be considered as an essential piece of literature for developing a canon on this subject. The previous statement may cause some religious right wing fundamentalist to go ape-sh**, but this book has such a high level of ontological (a term I use to replace spiritual) resonance that it cannot be denied that level of vindication. This is beyond cogent in the defense of altered states of consciousness; the philosophical depth of this book is transcendent of measurement. The book is presented in parts and is obviously a joint effort. The initial section is a series of chapters that is an overview of Strassman's scientific work from the FEDERALLY (yeah, Big Brother authorized it) sanctioned experiments with dimethyltryptamine, and his perspective on the nature of DMT. The second phase is a collection of chapters that brings forward an anthropological perspective of DMT and its use in indigenous tribes from Luis Eduardo Luna derived form his decades of studies with the substance, or substances containing it. Luna gives a detailed list of expectations and executions all deduced from his experience, after which he goes into a pontification of magic mushrooms. The third section of the book is navigated by Ede Freska which is, by my interpretation, the spear tip of book. His beginnings are that of the prototypical Eastside/Westside pitting that we see in similar subject matter of this stature that also interlaces the ideological turf war of Science vs. Intuition. Then he walks you through the study of plant consciousness (which I found really intriguing) and alludes to the level of consciousness in animals as well. Freska also delves into the Sitchin and von Daniken ancient astronaut theories and other perspective of the "gods" with a new perspective that I believe is quite tenable with the correlations of modern mythology and that of the archaic period. Lastly, we are introduced to Slawek Wojtowicz and he brings forward perspectives on past life regressions and draws forth interpretations of reality by utilizing our very fortuitously prophetic science-fiction. It bewilders me that science has been tweaking the chemicals of the brain utilizing pharmaceuticals and society accepts this due to the "experts-and-corporations-know-best" attitude, which obviously by now is insidious, but when one inquires to use a natural plant that our human culture has been experiencing for thousands of years, possibly eons, in his/her own home to journey on an introspective panorama of his/her psyche then we must sound the alarms and release the hounds! The one thing that should be served as a caveat is that if you have no experiential overlap here then you will think all of this is quite devoid of any credibility, especially when you get to the section of Strassman's portion of the book called "Subjective Effects". LOL! If you have never experienced any of this you will be like "WTF?!" By far, the most prudent aspect of this book is the fact that scholars are coming out of the closet in support of the profound information that can be extracted from these very surreal, but real, experiences. The book itself is a trip, but without the DMT.* The book also has three intermissions about every third of it that has a collection of some very eccentric and abstract art (of which I will be purchasing some copies of).

Extremely far out, as the title implies. Okay maybe the title implies that far out is the same as right here. Either way, this is a detailed analysis of various altered states and the experiences to be had during such states. Obviously more well known for his work on DMT: The Spirit Molecule, Strassman picks up here where that one left off.

Tackles questions raised by the psychedelic experience from a rational, scientific viewpoint. Strassman's contributions are particularly wonderful, but the whole book had me taking notes and ordering more material to further enrich the knowledge contained in this excellent collection of essays. So glad this is the first book I read to begin preparing for a journey of my own.

Not For Sale by David Batstone"Not For Sale" is one of those books that will leave in an indelible mark in your being. David Batstone has written an eye-opening account on the existing crisis of global human slavery. This fascinating book will take you through various personal accounts of the victims, survivors and abolitionist activists. It is a mind-changing, inspirational book that is a call for action. This 320-page book is composed of the following six chapters: 1. Shining Light into the Sexual Darkness: Cambodia and Thailand, 2. Breaking the Chains of Bonded Laborers: South Asia, 3. Rescuing the Child Soldiers: Uganda, 4. Undermining the Sex Syndicate: Europe, 5. Sheltering the Lost Children: Peru, and 6. Building a New Underground Railroad: USA.Positives:1. Wow! Where can I begin? It's a well-written, well-researched, fascinating look at the evil of global human trafficking.2. This book grabs you, overwhelms you and it ultimately changes you.3. An eye-opening book about the current form of human trafficking.4. The author treats this subject with utmost respect and compels the reader through common moral decency.5. Enough facts to ground the seriousness of the issue of human slavery but it is the author's ability to convey the stories in a lucid manner that drives this gem of a book.6. This is in fact a global issue!7. It's an inspirational book that compels you to do something. Mr. Batstone does a wonderful job of inspiring a modern-day abolitionist.8. Very good quotes abound. "A moral obligation cannot arise from an immoral act".9. How poverty rips apart a community.10. The wonderful inspirational stories of the many activists who care.11. The tools of the slave traders and how they use them for their evil purposes. Coercion and deception among them.12. The heart-ripping stories of children being sold into the sex trade.13. The story of a good lawyer...who knew?14. How the rich and powerful can work around a corrupt system.15. The evolution of the traffickers.16. The interesting take of how Germany and the Netherlands handle prostitution.17. The impact of corruption.18. Leveraging international diplomacy and its impact.19. The process of enslavement explained.20. How to deal with the problem? Recommendations from the activists.21. The facts from the published report: "Hidden Slaves: Forced Labor in the United States".22. A sound strategy on what can be done to fight the evil of human trafficking.23. A great conclusion chapter on how to end the slave trade in our time.24. A great list of anti human-trafficking resources.25. Good notes reference.Negatives:1. It uses flashbacks to tell the different stories. At first a little confusing but once you get into the rhythm of the stories, it works well.2. Illustrations and charts would have added value.3. Having to wait for Mr. Batstone's next book.In summary, "Not For Sale" is a captivating book that must be read. It's heartbreaking, it's emotional, it's gripping but ultimately it's inspirational and educational. Human trafficking is an evil that must be eradicated and the author does a wonderful job of providing the inspiration and guidance to do so. Bravo!Further recommendation: "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Batstone's style is a bit arrogant and sensationalistic but he covers this difficult topic in a way that is both accessible and informative. The book starts wide and closes in on the US, making the point that slavery happens here too. Child and labor slavery is covered but the focus is on sex trafficking.I wanted to know more about this troubling issue but was afraid I'd be overwhelmed by the disturbing nature of the information. Instead I was heartened by the stories of people around the world conquering this issue in their own ways. He also provides several resources for people interested in donating or contributing.I'm sure there are more in-depth and nuanced books on the topic. But if, like me, you aren't sure where to start, this is probably a good first read.

It seemed to me that I had encountered both in the course of my first trip to Moldova, one of the countries discussed in depth as a supplier of trafficked women in this excellent book by David Batstone.Angels of Darkness - the exploiters, operating with an inhumanity and spine chilling demonstration of evil in their relentless pursuit of profit, stealing the lives of the innocent and the weak.Angels of Light - the abolitionists and rescuers, those who would not look away, but rather risk their very lives to confront this great unrecognized evil of the modern age, and do so with courage, compassion, endurance and vision that would seem to be far beyond any human capacity that I could understand. Not for Sale describes this clash of good and evil swirling about the global slave trade in its many pernicious expressions in the 21st century. The author has chosen a narrative form in which he weaves together stories of lives - those of the innocent victims, the Angels of Darkness who enslave and exploit them, and the Angels of Light who will leave no stone unturned to set the captives free. Each chapter tells the story of a different manifestation of slavery from around the world. These include providing children for the smorgasbord of sex tourism in Southeast Asia, slave workers to make bricks in India, gruesome accounts of children abducted to serve as soldiers (and the sex slaves of commanders) in Uganda, the role of organized crime in developing trafficking as vibrant economic growth engine in the commercially devastated former Soviet Republics, and on and on.The reader comes away with an understanding of the many forms of modern day slavery, the conditions that give rise to it, and what can be done to combat it.And this is perhaps the best aspect of the book - it contains a call to action, and describes many ways in which even those of us who are not heroes can join the fight. Ultimately, it speaks of hope in a context that at first glance would seem to be utterly hopeless. As the author writes, "I believe in the power of individuals to change the world".Angels of Light.

ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR SOUTHAFRICA. You have all the information you need (and more!) about Southafrica. A great buy. Footprint and Lonely Planet are the best (I bought both for my trip, I organized my own trip with a 4x4).

Good

My prefered travel guide is lonely planet. Everything (hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, touristic sites, etc) are reliable. I always travel with it!

Just like the rest of the Lonely Planet tour guide books - it's awesome! Everything is the same in this book as the others, except it's about South Africa. So, if you liked their other tour guide books, as I do very much, you'll like this one too. Check it out!

I used the 3rd edition of this guide on my first trip to South Africa in 1999. Back then, this guide would recommend places to stay in the most dangerous streets of Jo'burg, and guarantee the readers that the area was even safe to walk around at night. A taxi driver in Jo'burg told us he was appalled at their reccommendations on where to stay and where to go out, saying they were simply too dangerous, especially for white backpackers. The guide also had an aggressive attitude towards any predominantly white bars or clubs dismissing them as "artificial"... as if the only option was to go out in Shebeens.Racial issues apart, they seem to be reversing this trend, and have been doing constant progress. This edition recommends mostly well-located places and acknowledges that some areas are just too dangerous to stay in. Otherwise neglected entertainment areas are being put into this guide too.But the issue is that this guide is mostly useful in planning your trip, by telling how to get from one city to another, and what are the costs like, etc. It is also more useful in smaller towns than the larger ones. The fact is that there isn't a 100% reliable guide to South Africa, but this update is about as good as it can get.
