I can see why this book is ranked among the Classics, and it is certainly a classic work in American Literature. Richard Henry Dana, a Harvard student from a well-to-do family, suffering from health issues due to the stress of academic life, makes a health-motivated decision to sign on as a regular seaman on an American merchant sailing vessel circa 1830. Others of his standing would more than likely have opted for a tour of Europe or sailing on a luxury ship, but he believed the rigors and outdoor activity from sailor life would reinvigorate his health. Most who make this kind of life decision, especially from a privileged family and lifestyle, fail miserably and the "dream" is quickly aborted. Not so with Master Dana. The narrative covers two years of his life aboard two ships - the Pilgrim and the Alert, sailing on the Pilgrim to the Pacific along Coastal California, and returning back to Boston on the Alert. His education and insatiable curiosity and discipline to keep a good set of notes enabled him to create a sort of documentary novel that captures, in vivid manner, life aboard a merchant sailing vessel in the early 19th century. He documents both the good and the bad. The good is the sheer joy of physical exercise, the sun and salt air - which in fact did resolve his health issues - but also documents the bad, or perhaps "negative" side of merchant sailor life. A sailor's lot was not good. There was constant work, difficult sleeping conditions (watches every 4 hours), and constant calls for "all hands ahoy" when changing wind or weather conditions required reconfiguring of sails. I learned a lot about sailing from this book. I can't pretend to remember all of the various kinds of sails - there are many, but the fact that sailors were constantly up and down the rigging to set, unset, furl, unfurl, and in other ways reconfigure the sails to suit the winds and the weather. Their diet consisted mainly of salt beef, biscuits, and tea or water, except when in ports. The Captain was king, with power of life and death over the crew. Some were reasonable, and others tyrants. The passing of the ships around Cape Horn were vivid - weeks (and weeks...) of freezing sleet, hail, rain and snow, and still they had to go up into the rigging to try to work with sails and ropes that were literally frozen, and where one false move would put them into the sea - "Man Overboard" - and many were lost in this manner. His description of his fellow sailors, the merchant activities in California (mainly trading for hides), his observations of California during that period, where we now recognize great cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and lesser settlements which now are sophisticated highly populated urban centers were then merely a Mission, maybe a Presidio, and small populations of Mexican, Indian, and emigrant Americans living in adobe homes. The reader will enjoy this book in multiple ways - certainly in gaining knowledge about sailor life, early California, and the commerce at that time, but also about the range of characters, hardships, and occasional contentment accompanying his adventure. I loved the book, and glad I read it, and consider it a must read for those interested in history and wonderful storytelling.

“There is a witchery in the sea…” Richard Dana’s classic memoir of a two-year sea voyage still draws spell-bound readers after nearly 200 years. More than a diary, his story is the result of extensive notes he jots down—somehow—in between seaman’s strenuous duties, above-deck watches every four hours, near-death experiences, and exhausted sleep.Well-educated and from a family of means, the young Dana decides to take to sea as an able-bodied seaman (not an officer) at a time when life on board a merchant brig could be nasty, brutish and short. He takes us out of the Boston Harbor of 1834, around Cape Horn, and up the coast of California in the trader brig Pilgrim before changing ships to the Alert and returning via the same route.Here’s a passage that tells a modern reader how a ship of those days actually looks and sounds as she hits the murderous waves:“Two men at the wheel had as much as they could do to keep her within three points of her course, for she steered as wild as a young colt. The mate walked the deck, looking at the sails, and then over the side to see the foam fly by her, slapping his hands upon his thighs and talking to the ship… And when she leaped over the seas, and almost out of the water, and trembled to her very keel, the spars and masts snapping and creaking,—‘There she goes!—There she goes…as long as she cracks she holds!’”As much as being the story of life at sea in the mid-nineteenth century, TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST is also a rare glimpse into the Mexican state of California before it gained statehood a few years later—the people, the harbor towns and presidios, the thriving cattle-hide trade.The hardy mariners return with their cargo through the bitter-cold and dangerous seas of the southern hemisphere which threatens to kill them all. Herman Melville, after reading Dana’s account, remarked that it seemed to have been “written with an icicle.”When Dana published his memoir in 1840 it was with the hope that contemporaries and future generations would better understand the maritime life and even work toward righting the injustices of that life. He could not know that, when gold was discovered in California a few years later, his book would become almost a travelogue for “forty-niners” who flocked to our largest and richest state. Indeed, Dana Point, California, was named after him.

In the 1830's, the author (then a sickly Harvard student) shipped as a common sailor on a commercial clipper ship which left Boston to sail to California and back. Although an educated young man, he lived among the uneducated sailors as one of their own, almost completely separate from the officers on board. It is an engrossing read with detailed descriptions of all aspects of life about those old unpowered sailing ships--a difficult life indeed. The cruelty of the captains towards their men was particularly striking, as was the fact that pretty much everyone, once on board and under sail, was completely at the mercy of the captain, who was basically dictator of that small kingdom.I could hardly put it down. It's amazing to realize that people survived such hardships, and it's also a revealing and endearing story about men living in close quarters with men, either on a ship or in times or war, where no women were normally to be found at all. So interesting on several levels. Well written, and a great read. Highly recommended. (P S - I'm biting my nails to prevent revealing any spoilers about this true-life story).

When I first leafed through the book, I could see that most of the right hand pages were almost illegible, as if they hade been printed on an old copier which was low on toner. Indeed, the entire book looks like a bound collection of poor Xerox pages. In many cases, you can still see the margin shadows created by photocopiers. I requested a replacement, but I am skeptical that it will be an improvement.I expect better form Amazon. This was a disappointment.

When I was a child, I loved playing with my paper dolls. Now, I'm over 70 years old and am still enjoying dressing Jose Posada's Skeletons in their bright Mexican costumes. What a wonderful way to enrich learning and appreciation of Mexican art and culture. Through these paper dolls Spanish students can learn about Mexico's traditions of The Day of the Dead.These paper dolls bring to life the celebrations in Posada's State of Guanajuato, Mexico. These figurines remind me of those I saw in the market in San Miguel de Allende. What beauty and what fun one can derive in dressing these unique paper dolls. This book is a wonderful gift for young and old!

I love these dolls! The vivid and colorful outfits cover a wide range of Mexican fashions, both historical and more contemporary. Since I am fond of both Día de los Muertos and paper dolls, this was a very exciting find! The beautiful designs went beyond my expectations and I have actually enjoyed sitting and cutting them out.

I celebrate the Day of the Dead in a big way and this book added to the fun for the children!

Product was not as expected. I wouldn't have thought all outfits needed to be cut; I assumed it would have perforated edges so you could easily change out outfits. I would not recommend. Aside from that, seller was fast, especially for before Christmas.

El dia del los muertos was just about skulls and skeletons for me before seeing this book. Not only is it a visual hoot (the skeletal characters have names that, believe it or not, are authentic to the holiday), but there are the coolest add-ons: a large sticker sheet with a host of skeletons in different situations and plying a host of trades. The bi-lingual captions added a smattering of Spanish to my vocabulary, and I was somewhat astounded to learn that the artist is actually a Chinese-American. But then, I noted that she had done a book of voodoo paper dolls (supply your own pins) that are equally authentic to bayou culture. Here's a practicing ethnologist working in the medium of paper dolls! Who could have imagined. Highly recommended. Buy one to cut and another for your collection. Sure to start a conversation over margaritas!

These were purchased for my granddaugter who loves alnything associated with the Day of the Dead celebration. The artistry in this item was outstanding. Thanks for great service.

I spent some time taking several books out of libraries in New York and found this to be one of two that has been the most helpful. In fact this is probably my favorite. It is chock full of ideas that are easy to execute and have proven effective. I have bought very little in the way of commercially made feeders, but have quite easily gotten a feeding station that offers four basic seeds (black sunflower, white millet, niger thistle and suet).The other book that has been a big help is "Projects for the Birder's Garden" by Fern Marshall Bradley. I also found that "The Cornell Feeder Watcher's Guide to Bird Feeding" by Jack Griggs and Margaret A. Barker gave me the courage to explore the more creative ideas of home-made bird feeders. It has a section that features folks talking about their Bird Feeding Stations. Some of them are quite eccentric --- really great stuff!

I am no bird expert but really enjoy feeding the local birds with our bird feeder. This book is packed full of usable information that is easy to read. It mostly is directed toward birds that live or migrate though MN but would be very applicable throughout the upper Midwest. The author really knows his stuff!

About the Author

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. We are big fans of Roald Dahl here.For anyone who doesn't know, Roald Dahl wrote in a time when children's stories were much darker and usually had a moral to them. Just be aware of that if you are not familiar with Dahl's work. Personally, it doesn't bother myself or my kids.This set contains Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (on one disc), James and the Giant Peach (one disc), Fantastic Mr Fox (one disc) and on the last disc, The Enormous Crocodile and The Magic Finger.The stories are read by Roald himself, which I thought was an added bonus. His voice is clear and easy to understand.This is definitely worth the purchase and I will probably buy it again when ours wears out because it is listened to so often.

I bought these because my brother and I listened to them at night as we fell asleep when we were kids and I wanted our daughters (6 & 8) to experience using their imaginations as they sized off. To my delight the James and the Giant Peach is the same exact one we listened to as kids same narrator and everything I felt like I was 5 years old again (I'm 38). These are a great alternative to watching TV turn them on while your kid plays and watch as they stop playing and listen to the stories as they imagine each character in their mind!

Got these to practice our listening skills during the summer months in the car. At first thought I'd had too high an expectation, but then the kids (ages 6 to 3) started asking for them by various names...and they promote moral discussions (during which I power off the whole system so all can hear what's said). :) The readers voice is a soothing English accented fellow whose diction is lovely and understandable even when the words are 'odd' to little ones American ears.

I LOVE this story teller. The grandkids enjoy each of the stories told, but as an adult who loves children's books, I fully appreciate the talent of Roald Dahl. His ability to infuse personality into the various characters and "retort" (as only Roald Dahl can retort) add both life and humor to his stories. As the imagination comes alive and the listener is swept away with the story, one forgets for just a moment that one is only seeing with the mind and not the eyes. Gifted is the word for Mr. Dahl.

These are abridged versions of the books

I loved Roald Dahl books when I was a kid and wanted to start introducing my own kids to them. We spend a lot of time in the car, so this was a great way to do it. I jumped at the chance to buy this set because, not only does it include 5 stories which is a great bargain, but it was read by the author himself! Since I had never heard his voice before, I thought this would be really interesting and make the set more special in a way. I was not disappointed! I love hearing these stories in Dahl's own voice. My children do too. They are 7, 5, and 3 years old. We have listened to the CDs over and over again. I think Dahl does an excellent job with his readings. I don't find it confusing which story is on which CD although they are not labeled. 1--Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 2--James and the Giant Peach, 3--Fantastic Mr. Fox, 4--The Enormous Crocodile and The Magic Finger. I believe there is about 5 hours of recording between all the CDs. I only wish the entire stories of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach were included instead of the abridged versions. I just can't get enough! Highly recommended!

I wish there were more stories here, but it does include some of the most popular stores. It would be nice if the CDs were actually labeled to show which stories are on which CD.

My kids love listening to these audio stories. I love that they are read by Roald Dahl it makes it that much more enjoyable. Great for a long car ride.

This is the continuation of Infection:A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Novel (Sympatico Syndrome Book 1)(see my review here).Survival isn't all that easy without all the modern conveniences as Cole and his family find out. And there are other survivor's out there that may or may not be that friendly. Then there is the worry about having enough food to survive the brutal Wisconsin weather. They begin to realize that they will have to become hunter gatherers and travel farther and farther from their island. They all realize that they have strengths that will help all the others. Thankfully Cole's brothers wife is a nurse--although medical supplies are almost non existent. A couple more people are added to their band including 2 very young children that were found in one of the houses they scavenged. They managed to have a Christmas where all the gifts were handmade--This one ends with the group trying to decide if just maybe they should try to move a bit south where the weather isn't so brutal.Yes, I have the 3rd and final book in this series and you will see it reviewed on my blog--keep your eye out for it.

This book had just the right amount of terror and violence balanced with a realistic approach to surviving an apocalypse. The island group applied their skills to survive...planting a garden.; canning food; gathering meds and weapons. Their enemies were of the humankind and their problems were ongoing with with no easy fixes. The only small criticism I have is the time line. Some complicated tasks were too easily solved. For example planting a garden and harvesting it requires more time than what was indicated. That being said, I would still definitely buy the next book in this series. I d like to know. Did they stay or go?

Really didn't hold my attention as well as the first book. The first book had moments it dragged on but the second book dragged on and on without anything really important happening, basically boring. The book abruptly stopped. There was no climax and no ending, no resolution. Very disappointed with the way the book just stopped without an ending. I wouldn't waste my time reading the third one.

I could not put this book down once I began reading. The plotting, dialogue and premise of the story drew me in immediately. This is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. I wholeheartedly recommend this one.

I actually came to care about these characters and found the book to be well-written without a lot of grammatical mistakes. I liked the story and the resourcefulness of these survivors. I would recommend both books in the series.

Enjoyed this book as much as the first one of the series. Consistent story line. Loved the characters and the story.

Sequel to Infection whose only flaw was a seemingly rushed ending. Isolation is an excellent read until you get to a huge cliffhanger and the third book is not yet ready which is very disappointing.

Combines survivalist techniques into a novel. However, everything seems too easy for them. I saw a few of the techniques on TV. Easy reading. Could be an inspiration to encourage people to read about advanced techniques.

Love this beautiful and very helpful book

Haven't had much time to practice, but sure I will enjoy it.

Excellent, informative book with plenty of helpful techniques and examples to follow. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone, either learning or experienced in brush lettering.

Amazing book, If you see the cover you probably will not going to buy the book, but the content.... Wao!!! Amazing, I practice lettering and it helps me a lot, especially using the brush pens.

This is a classic, and lots of technical learning for beginning brush writers. A must-have for hands-on learners. Lots of explanation and pictures of how to do it right. If you can learn from a book, that is. Of course, nowadays we have youtube for those with the curtailed attention spans.

If you are looking to get into brush calligraphy, then this is the book for you. It is clearly written and packed with all the information you'll ever need.

Not what I was expecting. I wanted a book with practice exercises.
