About the Author

Michael R. Solomon, Ph.D., is Professor of Marketing in the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Before joining the Saint Joseph’s faculty in the fall of 2006, he was the Human Sciences Professor of Consumer Behavior at Auburn University. Before moving to Auburn in 1995, he was chair of the Department of Marketing in the School of Business at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Professor Solomon began his academic career in the Graduate School of Business Administration at New York University, where he also served as Associate Director of NYU’s Institute of Retail Management. He earned his B.A. degrees in psychology and sociology magna cum laude at Brandeis University and a Ph.D. in social psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1996 he was awarded the Fulbright/FLAD Chair in Market Globalization by the U.S. Fulbright Commission and the Government of Portugal, and he served as Distinguished Lecturer in Marketing at the Technical University of Lisbon. He held an appointment as Professor of Consumer Behaviour at The University of Manchester (U.K.) from 2007–2013.   Professor Solomon’s primary research interests include consumer behavior and lifestyle issues; branding strategy; the symbolic aspects of products; the psychology of fashion, decoration, and image; services marketing; marketing in virtual worlds; and the development of visually oriented online research methodologies. He has published numerous articles on these and related topics in academic journals, and he has delivered invited lectures on these subjects in Europe, Australia, Asia, and Latin America. His research has been funded by the American Academy of Advertising, the American Marketing Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the International Council of Shopping Centers, and the U.S. Department of Commerce. He currently sits on the editorial or advisory boards of The Journal of Consumer Behaviour, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, Critical Studies in Fashion and Beauty, and Journal for Advancement of Marketing Education, and he served an elected six-year term on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Marketing Science. Professor Solomon has been recognized as one of the 15 most widely cited scholars in the academic behavioral sciences/fashion literature, and as one of the 10 most productive scholars in the field of advertising and marketing communications.   Professor Solomon is a frequent contributor to mass media. His feature articles have appeared in such magazines as Psychology Today, Gentleman’s Quarterly, and Savvy. He has been quoted in numerous national magazines and newspapers, including Allure, Elle, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Mirabella, Newsweek, the New York Times, Self, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. He frequently appears on television and speaks on radio to comment on consumer behavior issues, including appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Newsweek on the Air, the Entrepreneur Sales and Marketing Show, CNBC, Channel One, the Wall Street Journal Radio Network, the WOR Radio Network, and National Public Radio. I am about to graduate from Northeastern and this was the book for one of my final elective courses, Consumer Behavior. I run several websites so it is absolutely critical to me to understand how web visitors think about content, make selections, and build affinities with brands. The book provided wonderful information in all areas.The book is full color and provides a wealth of examples of ads, labels, and other material so you can understand what is being presented. You can see visually how some styles of promotions draw users in, while others repel the users to convince them to stop doing something (for example, using drugs). The book uses real life stories mixed in with theoretical explanations to help you explain the concepts.There is a good mix of cross-cultural information, to help readers understand how marketing to an American audience differs from marketing to the Chinese, for example. It also delves thoroughly into sub cultures, from African Americans to tweens to Harley riders. It discusses the challenges of narrowing down social class in our mobile society. It discusses how buyers have ongoing "wars" in their heads between the rational decision making process and the emotion-driven pleasure center.I enjoyed the book immensely and found much of its material immediately valuable for my daily work. I imagine most people who read this will find it helpful, if not for what they do for a living, then in how they themselves are being marketed to and are making decisions.I have a minor "factual" issue I'd like to point out. On page 535 the author perpetuates the myth that we don't throw rice at weddings now because it makes birds' stomachs' explode. This absolutely is NOT TRUE. Birds eat rice naturally and their bodies deal with it fine, even when it's not cooked. There were no rice cookers in nature :). The reason churches asked people to stop throwing rice is that it's a royal pain to clean up.So, that point aside, I do recommend the book.I purchased this book with my own funds to take my class.

This book gets the job done, but certainly needs to be thrown away when I return it in a few days. I used this book for my consumer behavior course in college. The entire book has been vandalized with snarky remarks and inappropriate comments. I felt uncomfortable sharing this book with my friend in class because of the comments someone has written throughout this textbook. I was so annoyed when I had to read this book and look at the unnecessary remarks, however it was usable so I kept it and read through because it was so cheap to rent.

Interesting differences between peoples class and their purchases. Blue/white collar etc. Perceptions, attitudes, values, thought processes, how the internet has changed everything, and people are doing more online purchases than stores.

This book offers a beautiful perspective of the consumer's world with real world examples and lots of pictures for us visual folks. The author itself has a lucid writing style which enables him to flow through the book and making it seamless to read. There are a lot of " Haha " moments and included are real world facts and stats that will surprise you if you did not already know. This book is Good Game.

Rental for class. Book was overall in good condition except for page 201 & 202. I inspect my rentals before using and I noticed inside corner was ripped and falling out of book. I taped it back in, but hope that I dont get blamed for the tear as I treat all my rentals carefully.

It's a textbook. What could I possibly write about a textbook? It's informational. It's boring. Great for paperweight. This book does not stand out from any other marketing/business book. If you can avoid reading this book somehow and instead go out in the real world and just start a business and try something, do it. Real world experience is 1000% better than a textbook.

I really like this book. It has a very current focus that reaches around the world. It's easy to read and very informative. I am using it for a consumer marketing class that I'm taking. One of the things that I really like about this book is that it is full of advertisements from all over the world. I also have an interest in graphic design and advertisement, so I have a lot of fun reading this book and looking at the pictures!

This was one of the most interesting textbooks I've ever came across! Totally recommend even if you're not majoring in marketing!

This is a good starter book on what turtles and tortoises require. It outlines many of the types of turtles and tortoises, has tons of color pictures, and is chock full of info.It goes over habitats, feeding, breeding, hibernation, dangers (fire ants, spinach) etc. including practical tips from the authors.Unfortunately, this book convinced me that it is not very easy to keep turtles and tortoises and this would be a major investment and worry, so I decided not to.Oh well.

Great book to learn about turtles but not so much for Tortoises

When I got my turtle, Tim, I didn't know a thing about turtles - so I got this book as well as did a ton of research online. This book has TONS of good information (and pictures) about how to care for and house turtles. My turtle is several years old now, and is very happy and healthy. I recommend this to anyone who is looking to get a pet turtle. The reality of turtle-keeping is that it is a LOT of work. Turtles are dirty, and even with high powered filters their tanks need constant cleaning. I didn't know what I was getting in to, but it's worth the effort! Turtles are wonderful pets, and this book will give you all the basic information you need to know.

I picked up this book for a class that I was teaching at my office. The goal of the class was to train HTML/CSS/JavaScript and/or Java programmers to code in Perl since a large portion of our code base is written in Perl. Overall, I think that the book was a good choice for the class for a number of reasons.First of all, the book is already written with a classroom setting in mind. The authors have used previous versions of the book, titled "Learning Perl Objects, References and Modules", for their own courses. This updated version benefits from all of the hours of empirical testing that it has received in the classroom. There are many thoughtful additions like having all of the chapters close to the same size. This allowed for me to assign a single chapter per session and know that I could comfortably fit the lecture and discussion of the chapter into a two-hour session. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter and answers for those exercises (with discussion) in an appendix.This book is good for getting people just learning the language ready for the TMTOWTDI/TIMTOWTDI aspect of Perl. Take something simple like opening files... there are at least four 'standard' ways to do it. The book prepares you for all of the different versions of annoyances/features like this that show up in Perl code by walking through the evolution of the feature.Another reason that I like this selection of book is that data files and code examples are actually available for download. I've been shocked that some of the programming books that I've gotten lately actually don't have this addition.Finally, the course that I'm teaching is for people who probably already know how to program, at least a little, but they don't know Perl. I didn't want to drag them through all of the picky details of the language by starting with "Learning Perl" or something equivalent. This book has been a good choice for introducing programmers to Perl. I do have to stop occasionally and explain some fundamentals of the language, but not too often... maybe I just work with smart (or shy) people :)Of course, the book isn't perfect. As odd as it seems, one of the biggest complaints that I get is over the Gilligan references that are used in all of the examples in the book. There is also some coverage of packaging modules for CPAN. This is useful, just not for the particular class that I'm teaching, so we skipped that chapter. Of course, both of these complaints are pretty weak.In short, this is a good book, especially if you are doing a training session about Perl.

I own a ton of technical books on various computer subjects. If they were all as well written as this, life would be so much easier. It is clear and concise. Easily re-readable for more difficult concepts. Every chapter has self exercises, and the answers are in the back. I honestly wish other books were written in this detailed, easy to follow style. The code examples actually demonstrate the concepts and do not introduce distractions from what you are trying to learn. This book is very gratifying to work through because you actually learn at a good pace. The chapters serve as a great desk side reference. My only complaint is that "Intermediate" is in the title, which looks like of noobish on my desk. On the other hand, you know exactly where you are in the series hierarchy..

This book is a must for anyone who has mastered the first several chapters of "Learning Perl" and wants to extend this perl skills. It covers an excelent choice of topics. With one exception, the coverage is well written and supported by amusing examples and appropriate exercises (with informative answers). Only that exception and a strong bias toward the UNIX user keep it from earning my highest rating.The section on the use of the module Data::Dumper for marshalling data fails to meet the standard set by the remainder of the book. Frankly, it leaves me confused. Fortunately, the advice is to use other modules which are covered with the expected clarity.Topics are all of general interest. Do not expect to find detailed advice relevant only to a single disipline such as network, data base, or biology programming.

The authors continue to explain well, add puns, and bring your Perl to new heights. Definitely one of my better purchases.

This one hit me hard in the head -- but very detailed and the first book to open up my eyes to what's going on in Perl code... Of course, not as detailed as the Camel, but very good indeed and very funny as other Perl books...

Ali Smith has a way of drawing you into her world. I always find myself lost in her novels and, when I've finished them, at a loss as to how to summarize them. This review was stretching out way too long, so I'm starting again, paring away the details that you need to discover for yourself.'Winter' is both a family drama and a commentary on the changing climate--both the physical climate and the sociopolitical one. The family: three estranged people and a lovable impostor. The commentary: our world and what it is doing to humanity. One of Smith's targets is technology and the way it removes us from real relationships, responsibility, and personal authenticity. The egotism and isolation it creates feeds into the populist movements that brought us Brexit and Donald Trump, both of which come under Smith's verbal attack. There's a moment when Art, one of the main characters, reads about a crowdfunding effort to raise money to buy a boat that will repel Italian boats trying to rescue refugees. It's hard not to see in that the support in some American quarters for building a wall on the Mexican border and deporting Dreamers to "home countries" that have never in memory been their homes. And it's no surprise that one main character, Arthur, writes a successful blog, Art in Nature--even though he is never out in nature and is rarely artful; it's all just BS for attention and self-gratification.The family story: It's almost Christmas, and Art and his fiancée Charlotte committed to spend the holiday with his mother, Sophie, in Cornwall. But there's a problem: Charlotte, an environmental activist, has called out Art for his lack of any real commitment to pro-nature causes. (There's symbolism in the fact that she destroys his laptop on her way out.) But does Art call Sophie and explain the breakup? Of course not. Instead, he hires a young Croatian girl who looks like she could use some cash to pretend to be Charlotte. Lux turns out to be the quiet hero of the novel.Sophie and Art don't get along. Sophie, a once-successful businesswoman, doesn't get along with her aging hippie sister, Iris, who is always off somewhere saving the world. And lately, Sophie has been seeing things . . . namely, the floating head of a young child. It's Lux who tells Art that he must call Iris and tell her to come at once, despite the sisters' animosity.Enough said about the plot. The novel moves back and forth among the family members and back and forth in time through their memories, yet it always comes back to the present day, asking, How did we get to this place? Full of Smith's usual wordplay, 'Winter' gives us bittersweet of the art that once was and the nature that we're losing, yet somehow we're left not so much with a sense of doom as a ray of hope. I can't describe it any better than that without giving away far too much and making it sound like something it isn't. Read it. Find out for yourself. When you're done, you'll want to read it again.

Such beautiful writing that enfolds the depth, breadth and heft of experience. It's hard to write about this stunning book because my words feel impoverished in comparison to the writing of Ali Smith. So much to love - deep and insightful charaterisations, effortless bridging of different times in a flow and sweep of prose, important questions, perspicacious observations, sympathy for flawed and difficult individuals. There's a gentle and tender view underlying it all that is nonetheless fierce and compelling. I felt completely drawn into this universe and am sad that the book is finished. Looking forward to the next season in the set.

I'm becoming so enamoured with Ali Smith's style. This book is so cleverly witty, steeped in UK and global context, and depicts the roles and trends of modern communication technology. All done in a thought provoking way. The characters are vivid and enthralling. Now the long wait for Spring.

Pick up this book. Note how, in the hands of a literary master, no tricks are required. The counterpoint between characters falls exactly when, and as, needed to move the plot. Time moves forward. Time moves backward. I think of Lessing and Drabble.

This book could have had more life in it; more emotionality would have brought these characters to life. Instead I found I could barely distinguish between Charlotte, Sophie or Lux. They were all flat and their laconic speech was unengaging and seemed to me to be inconsequential. The male character, Art, who is related to two of them, appeared to be as ground down as the three women.I was very disappointed. The book received high praise from literary reviewers but not from me.

I like the prose, but with the reservation that it can be elliptical, and illusive. While "Autumn" was pretty clearly about mother/daughter in relationship to the daughter's friend and mentor, "Winter" seems to start with a surreal (or metaphorical) use of the "head" which follows her around, and a pretty straight-forward realistic novel. I found this mixture disconcerting, in that it divides the book into two halves.

A timely post-modern piece, with political undercurrents in Britain and even the US. But too fragmented. Good characters, good scenes, but lacking in momentum. This author's "Autumn" was much better, in the same mode.

Smith is doing a tetraology and Fall was one of my favorites of last fall and I thought this is going to be hard to equal. But Winter I reread as soon as I finished. Among many other delights, this is the best dysfunctional family Christmas novel ever
