This was an interesting read, which could have been an excellent read if it was written by a more capable author. Many others have commented on the arrogance with which the writer keeps praising herself while putting down her husband throughout the book. For the fist third of the book this isn't too bad, but once the author gains confidence in her sailing ability it is really getting intolerable. One must wonder if this book was written during the divorce proceedings. The author also seems to run out of vocabulary too frequently as paragraphs increasingly end with expressions such as: Wahhhh, Eew, Booo, and so on. One can only assume that this is all in an attempt to be funny, but it really just comes across as poor writing.I also think this book does give the wrong impression to people who are thinking of cruising in the Caribbean. When the author chooses a $200K boat, without experience, and then states at the end of the book that next time she'd get a larger one it is the equivalent of a rich person stating that one can't drive to work in a vehicle costing less than $60K. There are plenty of good cruising boats to be had for well under this kind of money. In fact it is interesting reading about what needed replacement. If she'd have bought a fixer upper she'd have replaced all those parts before the trip, probably gotten a more solid fiberglass hull, as older boats are often stronger built, not needed a bank loan, and could have cruised for several more years. That said this book is an interesting description of a Caribbean cruise, and it is inspiring if you manage to get past the arrogance!

I read the rather harsh negative reviews of this book with a chuckle. I’ve met cruisers like this—many times. The author and her husband were hopelessly naive going into this adventure and, let’s face it—they aren’t much as sailors. But they freely admit that, and it’s really the theme of the book. Personally, I rather admire their “What the hell; let’s go for it!” attitude.Id recommend this book to anyone with limited boat experience who is thinking about chucking it all and heading out for blue water. It’s not all romance and margaritas—it’s a lot of work, a fair amount of money, and quite scary at times. It will give you a pretty good idea of what you are getting yourself into. I regularly suggest the book to anyone who sees my boat (a monohull) and says “Wow—I’d love to go cruising!”If you are an experienced sailor, skip this book—you’ll only drive up your blood pressure.I knocked off a star because the text could have used some editing. It reads like a blog, which is what it was, and it’s a bit long in places. And by the way—if you are thinking of doing what these folks did, take a two-week vacation first, in Florida or San Diego, and take a sailing class. I think the author would agree.

I have just sold my house and everything I own to live aboard a boat so this book was particularly interesting to me. Too many times, books of this type focus too heavily on the upside of the cruising life so it was a little refreshing to see that focus shift to the other side and provide a lessons learned. If you're planning on taking on this lifestyle, it's worth your read and may even talk you out of it. There is indeed a lot of maintenance and waiting for weather windows and all that which always seems to be glossed over in other books. The writing is *very* conversational. Once you notice the extraordinary use of exclamation points you will never be able to unsee them. There are lots of "hrrm", "oy" and various similar vocalizations that work in a verbal conversation but become a little overhwhelming in written form. You either get used to it and enjoy it or you don't and it gets to be too much for you. This is a good story for the lessons learned. Some will be obvious to you and some will not so you will pick up some helpful hints.

I've been on a bit of a tear - reading all kinds of sailing books. The fact I eventually made it to this one - having exhausted about 20 other great books - is like Fonzie jumping the shark; it's all over. The woman is annoying..... I didn't get through a chapter without cringing for her husband. There are a few pearls of wisdom here, but you have to pay attention to find them through all the trite and silly verbalization's of the thoughts inside this woman head. Pass on this book. Get anything by Moitessier or Slocum. Stay away from this Harlequin Romance novel of a sailing book.

When you read this book you will wonder how in the world did these two sail the southern Caribbean but keep reading because they have a short description of all of the islands they visited. If you are planning on heading south this is a good read.

Very funny and well-written. I was looking for more of a technical book on living aboard but this offered insight that I wasn't expecting. Definitely a good book to leave laying around since it is broken up into sections that you can easily take in one sitting. It also offers some good advice and experiences of some of the islands that you may visit during a trip to the Caribbean.

I am finding that being a novice sailor (and I use the term very loosely!), I want to keep this one on hand so that when I own a boat I can refer to the commentaries and boxed notes on the chapter pages so that I remember what's important in more than a "manual" setting. A good read!
