Not a riveting read but then such a trip isn't riveting, there are the fun days, the wow occasions & then there are days when nothing seems to go right, you might then ask okay so why the 4 stars, that was because the book is still an interesting & worthwhile read. You take the journey through the author's narration & how he experienced it, where he documents the daily experiences of his family on their overland trip & their daily trials & tribulations. If you are remotely interested in overlanding, exploring or travelling to new places then you can kind of get the experience & the idea of these places via the book. The author tells the story of their trip pretty well so that you get to understand how their typical day is & the highs & lows they experience, the good as well as the bad so that the reader understands that such a trip is not just a bed of roses & that their lives aren't just a big holiday, there are the daily mundane maintenance things that still need to be dealt with. He has no regrets though, as a family they seem to be enjoying themselves & are planning their next trip & next book. If you were/are planning such a trip for the first time then this book will either spur you on or sober you up, an adventure it is, but plain sailing no, Graeme seems to have told it as it is.
I have read a few books now about overloading through South America but this one was so far my favorite. The first quarter or so of the book is the family's journey overloading through Africa (they are originally from South Africa) and then the rest of their book is their journey through South America told through a South African's perspective which I found very refreshing seeing as a lot of the books I have read have been through the perspective of someone from the United States. If you are thinking of doing a trip like this or just want a very entertaining read about a family's several year-long journey through an incredible country, I would recommend this book
Exceptional story telling and amazing adventures...a must read for any current or aspiring overlander! I love the unabashed accounts of successes and failures. It is a great balance of story telling and overlanding technical detail. Too many travel and overlanding books say "we broke down, but now we have it fixed and this is our next destination...blah blah blah. Graeme shares enough detail to put you in his shoes and really transports you feel like you are on the trip with them. You will also learn a lot about what it is like to overland and how it is not for the faint of heart! Great job guys!
Whether you're a seasoned overlander or an armchair global dreamer, this book is a fun read from start to finish. Graeme does a brilliant job entertwining hilarious accounts of working through the nuances of each country they visit, fiddling with the Land Rover, driving harrowing roads and dispelling some of the ridiculous preconceived "horrors" they were constantly warned about before setting off. A very easy read that'll have you shopping for a Landy of your own.
Graeme offers a true and honest story of what it is to travel with a family. All the highs and devastating lows . The fears of a father and husband , questioning his decisions but keeping the course. More than that it is an honest study of a family . He and Luisa's love for each other and their children . Buy the book , tell a friend or ten to buy it and keep them rolling .
As a long time adventurer myself, and someone who loves getting lost in their vehicle, this book was preaching to the converted. But it's books - and true-life adventures - like this that made me a convert! Splendid reading!
Just finished the book over a week of camping & traveling. Loved reading the saga of the Bell family and their adventures touring the world. Great vacation read, captures a voice like reading a travel journal. It was a perfect companion. Now I just need to get myself a Land Rover...

Not a fan of this - my cons (and not everyone else's) are that I do not like first person narratives in Fantasy - it seems to lose any suspension of disbelief, and becomes kind of ridiculous sounding when you read the words - also, not a fan of the whole nick-naming thing - Once in a while, maybe, but the entire group has a nickname, and nothing that makes anyone stand out - I felt nothing for any of the characters - when one of the company dies, I was very unmoved at the event - all in all I read this because it is filed under Classic Fantasy, but this is one that will not remain on my shelves nor will I proceed with this series - I am extremely disappointed, but there are a million books in the world, and I have more to go.
Have you ever gone into a book blind and been so surprised you look again to see if you picked up the right book? That was me, now I’m not entirely sure why but I thought this was about a group of guys on a ship sailing the open seas *shrugs*. So I was really surprised when it is about a band of soldiers for hire, more surprised when there were Wizards in that band and floored when they started talking about vampires, forvalaka and beings that have been brought back from the dead.After the first chapter I had no idea what was going on. I honestly thought I missed something and needed to go back and start again. This is why I was happy I was in a buddy read for this book. I would have maybe given up thinking that I totally was missing something, I wasn’t. It is Cook’s style to have a character know something but not let the reader in on it for awhile. It takes a little getting used to.The best thing is that this is Grimdark…so we are following a group of men who are mercenaries. They sell their swords to the highest bidder, more or less and will fight for any cause. It’s a tale of war so there is bad on both sides but it becomes pretty clear that our team is playing for the bad side.“You who come after me, scribbling these Annals, by now realize that I shy off portraying the whole truth about our band of blackguards. You know they are vicious, violent, and ignorant. They are complete barbarians, living out their cruelest fantasies, their behavior tempered only by the presence of a few decent men. I do not often show that side because these men are my brethren, my family, and I was taught young not to speak ill of kin. The old lessons die hardest.â€It becomes pretty clear that Croaker and a few of the officer type people are the best of the crew but even they are hardened men that sometimes do the right thing but more often than not they just do the thing they are being paid for. Currently they are in service of The Lady. She is a bit of a megalomaniac set on world domination but hey everyone has to have goals. She also has a team of people she has brought back from the dead to be in her service….Croaker has even romanticized her in a few of his writings the beautiful seductess. That might have been a mistake as she is cruel, vindictive and will kill thousands of men just to further her goals.“I damned myself for my earlier romanticism. That Croaker who had come north, so thoroughly bemused by the mysterious Lady, was another man. A stripling, filled with the foolish ignorances of youth. Yeah. Sometimes you lie to yourself just to keep going.â€We only ever get into the lives of a few of the main band but man the story was really gripping. If George RR Martin wrote this it would be over 1000 pages as he described the battle standards, the detailing around an archway and 3 days of battle. I’d be bored to death and skimming because battles are not really my thing. But Cook gives or tale and sometimes he abbreviates because he doesn’t give you every detail in the 2 weeks of a march north, or the battle that waged for 5 days. Instead he gives you the plot developments and meat of the story. There are fun times too as Croaker records the various Wizard battles between frenemies Goblin and One-Eye.There are some great raw unredeemed characters. Raven has some sort of past that made him kill his wife and lovers before joining The Black Company. He almost seems to have a little magic of his own and he shows how merciless he can be a few times is this book. But he was my favorite character and I really enjoyed how different he was from the rest of the company.There were some big surprises at the end of this book and it was well worth the read. I loved the idea of a band of men with their own moral code, at least to each other. They are not heroes and they are on the wrong side but it is an interesting journey and I’m excited to see where they go next.Note: I really suggest reading this with a few people. There are a few things that were somewhat critical I might not have caught all on my own and since the characters are so unhero-esk it’s really great discussion.
I enjoyed this book so much that I'm now neck deep in the series.If you're a fan of the Malazan series, then you should really give this one a shot and see what you think. If you enjoyed following Fiddler and the Bonehunters, then you'll probably feel at home following the Black Company in their escapades. It has the same militaristic feel to it, along with secret plots, back stabbing, epic battles, magic, and all in a much smaller scope than the Malazon series.The story is told primarily from the perspective of Croaker, the company physician and annalist, and it appears that the story is essentially being told from the annals. Any time the story is being told in first person, you know it is from Croaker's point of view. Everyone else is referred to in third person, which I really appreciate because it helps you keep track of who you are following and what's currently going on.It's a somewhat simple story in scope, at least in comparison to other Epic Fantasy novels (Wheel of Time, Malazan Book of the Fallen) but I quickly came to appreciate the smaller scope of the story. The series is still deep enough to be enticing, but not so deep that you get lost at every turn trying to make sense of it all. You don't really get any of the "fluff" either that longer books have big chunks of (or in some cases, entire books filled with fluff.)I love the story, I love the characters, my only complaint really is that I wish they were a bit longer. I'm chewing through these books so fast, but enjoying every minute of it.

The basic facts about the story are easy to find these days, what with the internet, but this book is well worth every cent because it really gets you acquainted with the main characters as three-dimensional people embarking on a long-shot piece of subterfuge.What's particularly interesting is how the author shows you that the UK intelligence people were thinking very hard about how the enemy thinks. Starting there - like with Hitler's paranoia about a possible British landing at Greece or thereabouts - they could really "sell" the idea of Mincemeat to the Germans. The fact that the whole plan hinged on the ostensibly neutral Spanish makes it even more astonishing that the thing worked.A story about a different kind of warfare. Very entertaining and human. It's amazing that it's true.
Macintyre does a good job putting the reader right into the action. I was reminded while reading this book that non-fiction can differ from fiction in the number of characters the reader must keep straight. I commend Macintyre's efforts to help in that task by often using the real name alongside the alias. Nevertheless, it could still get a little confusing especially when double agents were involved.That said, I must add how much I enjoyed reading a bit of history that gets swept under the broad-brush treatment we normally get in viewing world events. It brings to mind the saying of the stage: there's no such thing as small parts, only small actors. Macintyre admits that the Sicily invasion could have been done without this one piece of deception and that no one can prove it had an impact. However, he makes a very strong case for the importance of it. I found how detailed they were in faking their ruse very fascinating. Watching how committed the Germans were to believing the ruse simply because they wanted to surpassed the work that went into creating the lie.Operation Mincemeat was like reading a mystery that let you know the who the perpetrator was at the beginning and let you accompany him as he developed the intrigue and misleading clues. It's entertaining, astounding, and enlightening. I am now wondering where to go to get to the truth of what is happening in world, national, and even local events.
An absolute page-turner that adds so much more newly-released/newly-declassified information to "The Man Who Never Was", which most people who would think about buying this book would have seen. So, if that describes you and you are hesitating because you're wondering "why read the book if I've seen the movie?", buy this book! You will learn SO much more! Not that the movie or original book was inaccurate because it took "Hollywood liberties." When the movie and original book were made in the early 1950s, even the Ultra Secret was still classified and top secret, so that entire relationship is completely eliminated from those original stories, as are many things that, due to the Official Secrets Act (U.K.) could not be talked about! So, the book/movie had to work around those obstacles either with "deceptions" and "inventions" of it's own, or leaving things out. The original author Montagu, was the spy who developed and ran the operation, along with a partner, Charles Cholmondeley, who was also for security-related personal reasons, declined to be mentioned in the book or movie. You'll learn how they really got the body (hint: not exactly as in the movie/book) and how Ian Flemming (yes, THAT Ian Flemming!) was himself actively involved in "Operation Mincemeat" (a.k.a. "The Man Who Never Was") along with a host of other now-well known spies-turned-authors, such as Graham Greene, and other notables including the soon-to-be-notorious British traitor-spy, Kim Philby. Ben Macintyre is an established author and a fine writer, including "The Man Who Would Be King." This is a great book for everyone. The effects of "Operation Mincemeat" are still being felt today, and everyone should know about what has been called by historians the single, most important and successful wartime deception in history, rivaled only by the original itself, The Trojan Horse, more than 3,000 years earlier.
So I'm biased, or more properly hooked on Macintyre! His writing captures the essence of everything to come within the early paragraphs in almost every one of his books I have read. Mincemeat is no exception. You get the idea very soon which way this story is going to go but you cannot anticipate very far ahead because there is always a new character or some unexpected wrinkle proving " the best laid plans of mice and men..."Even with the twists and quirks, the scheme has a happy ending unless you were rooting for the Third Reich. Stephen Witt was born in New Hampshire in 1979 and raised in the Midwest. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in mathematics in 2001. He spent the next six years playing the stock market, working for hedge funds in Chicago and New York. Following a two-year stint in East Africa working in economic development, he graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2011. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

It's a one-of-a-kind on the market, and the book's flaws shouldn't deter you from reading it.As a musician, a programmer, a composer, and a millennial, I'm greatly interested in understanding the dynamics of the modern music industry. So, I picked up this book with great joy, and I am very glad I read it. As I read, I felt like I was sitting at a cafe with Stephen Witt - a man who is clearly deeply knowledgeable and full of incredibly interesting stories. As a narrative, the work is captivating. However, as a coherent, edited book, it falls short of perfection.As the other reviews mentioned, Witt carefully interweaves several stories within the book. I felt that the balance between the broader music industry and the individual stories of prolific pirates was a bit jarring sometimes. I greatly appreciated the introduction where the author discusses the academic research that led to the invention of the MP3, and even dives into some of the technical aspects of how music is compressed. As a layman, this was incredibly useful, and I learned lots. I was also emotionally captivated by Dell and Glover's story. The book fell a bit short, however, when it jumped to the broader dynamics within the music industry. Moreover, while Witt's conversational tone can be a page turner, oft-repeated sentence structures and convoluted phrasing would have surely benefitted from a better editor.All in all, I greatly enjoyed the book, but wish it was edited for clarity and slightly restructured for coherence. This shouldn't deter you from reading it, as the benefits still greatly outweigh the cons.
This was one of those books I purchased (for Kindle) as an impulse buy, but found to be a really good one. Stephen Witt does a great job telling the story of the mp3 and how it revolutionized (for better and worse, I suppose) the music industry. He does this through very well-informed alternating chapters told from the vantage point of different characters - one of the inventors of the mp3, a hacker from North Carolina, a music executive at Universal Music, and some bit players like Steve Jobs and a representative from the Recording Industry Association of America.In brief, the story is this: a fledgling technology, the mp3, is basically losing out to the industry's preferred mp2 and the Compact Disc... until music hackers discover the amazing potential for ripping music from CDs and keeping them on their computer. This, obviously, affects the music industry, who never anticipated (or didn't know how to think about) the mp3's rise to prominence. So, the music industry needed a way to stop this technology or incorporate it into their fold, which eventually they did with the rise of the mp3 player (which had questionable legality in its early years, as mp3s were primarily associated with hacking). Now, the music industry deals almost exclusively in selling digital media via the mp3, but even now, the music industry is a shell of its former self in terms of sales. The mp3 basically nudged them to monetize in less profitable ways; not only do they sell songs cheaper than via compact disc (and can't rely on selling whole albums), but venues like Spotify monetize music by selling advertising along with it.So, this is a story ab out how the mp3 had huge effects all over the music industry; not bad for a technology that was largely declared dead in the water during its development. One thing Witt does really well - besides pacing the story like an expert journalist - is that he doesn't moralize too much. Was the mp3's rise because it allowed easy theft so that people could enjoy the fruits of others' labor for free? Or was it a natural and understandable reaction to the cartelization of the music industry (which, during the mp3's rise, was found guilty of collusion to keep the price of CD's up)? Witt doesn't say. If I had to guess, he sympathizes more with the latter (and suggests in the intro that he was one of the kids who got all his music by file sharing services). But he seems to keep the story a bit neutral, allowing each to come to their own conclusions (or read their existing conclusions in).This was just a FUN book to read. It is about entrepreneurship, economics, hacking, and technology's capability to disrupt (not to mention... MUSIC) all in one. I found it gripping. Any music fan - and especially those who think the medium is the message - will too.

I suppose he's right; they didn't want to adapt themselves to the changes, technology-wise...How Music Got Free is a very entertaining read. The reader gets to know everything that has to do with the way music developed since the 1960's while feeling like Witt is right there in the living room with you, telling how it's all been, coffee mug in hand. Highly recommended to anyone who's a music nuts, also to rising musicians who nowadays see themselves having their music on iTunes, Spotify and other digital stores. It's important to know the story behind the ways of distributing music, past and present.
Gaming directly in the author's age group and recalling this transitory period well, this was a gripping look at some of what transpired behind the scenes to change music forever. While it focuses on just three different people (and a 4th in Oink that helped replace Fraunhofer's role), the breath and complexity of the story woven felt complete.I think one of the most fascinating elements of the book are the points where with 20-20 hindsight you see just how clueless folks can be about the opportunities in technology. Introducing the telephony jukebox, I immediately thought "Holy cramp, it's Spotify 30 years to early!" Or the hubris of the music industry.I found myself being shamefully impressed with a music executive, despite my low opinion of the industry. And that's okay. This is a compelling read, with many layers.
