I love feminist and spiritual writing, and so was eagerly anticipating the arrival of this book. Unfortunately I find the offerings here quite shallow and short. I was not expecting to run into ridiculous phrases like "battle of the sexes" or "post feminists," but in many cases the language is nonspecific at best.I had been particularly curious to see Noam Chomsky's name in the table of contents, as I was unaware he had ever approached the topic of the sacred feminine. And I am still not aware that he as: All that appears here is the transcription of a rambling interview on peripheral topics. Interview transcriptions make up a large part of the book, which feels a bit like cheating in compiling an anthology.I was hoping the essay "Woman's Inhumanity to Woman" might bring some new insight to internalized misogyny, but oddly Phyllis Chesler devotes the essay to how RIGHT she is in thinking this a worthy topic, and how truly, truly terrible women are to one another, and how SO many people agree with her, and exactly what they said in praise of her book. I actually don't know any feminists who would disagree internalized misogyny is a major modus operandi of patriarchy, but this essay offered absolutely no insight beyond presenting a lecture (in bullet point) on what women "should" and "should not" do—as if another "self help" approach will somehow heal the wound. So yes, in sum: odd, shallow, and short. There might be some hidden gems I haven't discovered, but I'm not sure I have the patience to sort them from the rough.
Inconsistent quality across the chapters (which are written by different people). Not particularly moving or deep but a nice way to get familiar with sacred feminine mythology.
Ladies, you should read this book!
Being in my 80's, I found it hard to relate to some of the concepts, but the book is well-written.
Simply beautiful!
The topic was thoroughly covered. Some chapters were done in the radio show format and it made it a little harder to get through. Overall I was happy with the book.
Beautiful book about the Divine Feminine. More folks need to know about our real religious history.
Mythology drives culture and hence politics and the economy, so in order to change politics and economics, we have to change the mythology. That is exactly what Karen Tate has been doing for nearly a decade now with her radio show Voices of the Sacred Feminine. Her new book, also titled Voices of the Sacred Feminine, is an anthology that collects many powerful thoughts about Goddess spirituality as a tool for implementing that change on a personal, community and world level. Some of the pieces are essays written for this collection and some are transcripts of interviews from the radio show; all offer valuable insights into ways we can shift the current paradigm toward a more balanced, compassionate one.Voices of the Sacred Feminine is not a polemic - though of course, people steeped in the limited monotheistic patriarchal worldview may view it as such - but an encouragement to move forward, evolve, and heal, both within ourselves and in our communities at large. The wide variety of women and, yes, men who contributed their thoughts to this collection provide us with a window into Goddess spirituality in its great diversity as well as its underlying unity. In these pages you will find righteous anger, certainly, but also compassion, inclusion, and the stubborn fearlessness that has allowed women to survive and even occasionally thrive throughout the centuries of male domination. It is these qualities that drive us forward as we work to change the world. The book is divided into several sections based on several overarching topics. The first section, which addresses the existence of the Sacred Feminine and its (Her) manifestation in the world, gives us glimpses into divine forces from Mary Magdalene to Lady Liberty. These essays and interviews remind us that the Goddess is always relevant in every day and time and that to leave Her out is to risk dangerous imbalance, as we have seen for so long in worldwide society. The second section offers a variety of journeys into healing through opening ourselves to the Goddess in Her many guises. Whether it's a formal ritual, a meditative reading, or a thought-provoking essay about why the Goddess should be important to men, each piece suggests a way toward the healing that is necessary if we are to put ourselves, and our world, back together again. The third section focuses on the values and paradigms that Goddess spirituality offers to the realms of politics and business. How wonderful it would be if the cooperative, egalitarian spirit of the Sacred Feminine infected our governments and companies! But that won't happen on its own; we have to work for it. And the fifth section shows us exactly how we can achieve that goal. Sacred activism is a concept that can help us bridge the gap between personal spirituality and doing good in the world. The Goddess lives in all of us and She empowers us to speak out against the current, damaging paradigm. But instead of just complaining, we must offer a replacement, a new model. Voices of the Sacred Feminine addresses exactly this issue, this need to find a better way and to take action to implement it in the world. As Ms. Tate so perceptively comments, we must take on the taboo subjects of sex, religion, power and politics if we are to change them, and with the Goddess at our side, I believe we will ultimately succeed.

Quite good. Very complete.
This is an ok book. Not very thorough and is incomplete. Doesn't mention other houston malls etc.. Best to look around for better guidebooks.
I can't say it any better than Katherine Shilcutt did in her Houstonia Gastronaut article about this book, so I've included the text of the article below. The 10 Strangest Dining Recs in Moon Handbooks' Guide to HoustonTry Corner Bakery for breakfast, and other dubious insights.Published Jan 29, 2014, 12:58pmBy Katharine ShilcuttAbsolutely not. Judging by his photo in the back of the 2013 edition of Moon Handbooks Houston & the Texas Gulf Coast, author and travel writer Andy Rhodes seems like a nice guy. He lives in Austin—a strike we're willing to forgive—with his family, and has been the editor of The Medallion, the Texas Historical Commission's magazine, for over a decade. But then you read this line and something seems a little...off: "His ideal weekend includes a visit to Houston's Museum District, followed by a trip to Mustang Island for swimming and fresh seafood." That's a little over three and a half hours—a pretty long drive for swimming and seafood, even on a weekend. But maybe Rhodes just really likes to cruise the Texas highways; I don't know. What I do know is that Rhodes doesn't exactly have the grasp of Houston I'd hope and expect from a long-time travel writer and self-professed Museum District fan. His inclination to drive to Mustang Island after a day spent walking through the MFAH and the CAMH somehow makes sense in the company of some of his other, stranger recommendations for a visitor to the Bayou City.1. Houston isn't the fourth largest city in America, or anything.Says Rhodes: "Visitors and residents benefit from the city's enormous international population, offering authentic fare from all corners of the globe, including specific regional varities not found in most midsize cities." Who you calling midsize?2. Houston is smoking.Rhodes wrongly asserts: "This being Texas, the options also include a fair number of home-grown varieties, including some of the state's finest barbecue..." With all due respect to Killen's BBQ, Corkscrew, Gatlin's, and Pizzitola's...we know our place in the barbecue firmament; Houston is not a barbecue city—we have considerably more talent in other areas.3. You can share a meal at Oxheart! No mention at all is given to the fact that Oxheart is a tasting menu–only restaurant where the dishes rotate out with considerable frequency. Instead, Rhodes suggests sharing a "dessert treat of tomato tart on shortbread crust," which can't be ordered a la carte, and praises chef Justin Yu's famously subtle dishes for their "bold flavor combinations."4. Forget what we said above about home-grown varieties.Rhodes suggests downtown visitors head to Corner Bakery Cafe for breakfast—a chain restaurant that can be found from San Diego to Salt Lake City. Sure, The Breakfast Klub (which is in Midtown) gets a nod, but what about the amazing Macondo Latin Bistro? Or Niko Niko's in Market Square Park? Or Barnaby's? Or Irma's? And if you're randomly including Midtown in your purvey, why not suggest Harry's? Or Natachee's? Or Tacos a Go-Go?5. You know: the Montrose-Kirby corridor.I'm not sure what this area of town is supposed to be exactly, but it seems like Rhodes's catch-all designation for Montrose, River Oaks, Rice Village, West University, and Upper Kirby. They're all roughly the same place anyway, right? Here, Rhodes manages to make some good recommendations, with all the standards making an appearance: Uchi, Underbelly, Hugo's, Backstreet Cafe, Mark's American, Da Marco, Hay Merchant, Churrascos, Indika, and Local Foods, among others. But sprinkled throughout are strange non-sequiteurs, like this appraisal of Underbelly's Korean braised goat and dumplings: "...a wonderfully savory meal brimming with rich flavors you'd never expect from goat meat." Have you eaten goat before, Rhodes? How about the suggestion of Fajita Pete's for Tex-Mex? Or Ra Sushi for Japanese—without a single mention of Kata Robata?6. "The Heights"In Rhodes's book, The Heights really means the Washington Corridor and/or Shady Acres. As a result, no real Heights restaurants are even mentioned save Happy Fatz on White Oak. No Down House, no Revival Market, no Zelko Bistro, no Shade, no Liberty Kitchen, no Glass Wall. It makes no sense to specifically call out one of the city's richest dining neighborhoods, only to completely disregard its best offerings.Instead, in the "Heights," we're told to eat at Sushi Tora, Mam's House of Snoballs, and the Bernie's Burger Bus that's...occasionally parked at Little Woodrow's.7. You know what's really worth the drive? TopWater Grill. No, wait. It's totally not. Yet that's the sole seafood destination Rhodes lists in his "Greater Houston" section. If you're going to drive that far, go to Gilhooley's. TopWater is so painfully average as to be perhaps the biggest embarrassment on this list.8. "Houston has a sizable Chinese population."While this isn't untrue—Houston has over 72,000 Chinese residents—we're not known for our Chinese cuisine, as Rhodes is suggesting with this statement. We're known for Vietnamese, thanks to having the second-largest Vietnamese population in the country. Despite this, Rhodes fails to send readers to Chinatown at all. Instead, he suggests three restaurants nowhere near our most fascinating dining corridor: Fung's Kitchen, Yao Restaurant & Bar, and Kim Son. (Earlier in the book, it should be noted, Rhodes did throw a bone to Chinatown—except that he listed it as existing on Harwin, and being a "concentrated collection of Chinese establishments" with no mention of dining whatsoever.)9. Doneraki.Done-freaking-raki. There is no excuse for this. None. At least Rhodes gave a nod to Pico's Mex-Mex and Taco Keto, although he called the latter a "sample of Houston's burgeoning food truck scene," despite the fact that it's 15 years old, and incorrectly placed it in a Kroger parking lot.10. No Ninfa's. No Tony's. No Pondicheri. No Triniti. No Haven. No Cove. No Reef. No Hubcap. No Pass & Provisions. No Phoenicia. No Mahatma Gandhi District. No Chinatown.Look, I understand wanting to direct visitors to some more underappreciated, less busy, "hidden" gems. Houston is rich with those. But failing to mention some of Houston's best and brightest restaurants, cuisines, and neighborhoods—the very things that have made Houston a dining destination—so that you can save room for the more standard fare at places like III Forks Steakhouse, Divino (great wine list; mediocre food), Chama Gaucha, Becks Prime, Mary'z, and the others already noted above makes absolutely zero senseMy suggestion for culinary visitors to Houston: take some of Rhodes's own advice and go with something home-grown. Houstonia's own guide to Houston's top 50 restaurants, of course. Also: the Eater Houston Essential 38, the My Table Ultimate Food Lover's Guide to Houston, and the Fearless Critic Houston guide.
I got a copy of this book as a gift and I’ve enjoyed reading through it for ideas as a new Houston resident. It covers a lot of territory and does a good job explaining all the places people would want to see in Houston. I saw the other review from a blogger and not sure why they didn’t like it for not having all the trendy foodie news (it’s a general travel guide book, right?). I enjoyed the humorous writing and will buy it for gifts for people coming to Houston!

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2–Mr. Tiger lives in a perfectly fine world of prim and proper ladies and gentlemen. One day, the stiff suits, dainty teas, and Victorian manners begin to bore him… and he has a very wild idea. This “it's okay to be different†story stands out from other picture books on the topic thanks to Brown's delightfully clever illustrations and masterful compositions. From the tiger-striped cover that begs to be petted to the ingenious pops of bright orange (Brown's new signature color?) amid muted browns and grays, the award-winning illustrator does not disappoint. Children will appreciate Mr. Tiger's transformation and the way his friends eventually accept his (and their own) uniqueness. Several wordless spreads encourage audience participation while subtle visual clues gently build his character. A full spread featuring the newly liberated Mr. Tiger au naturel is delivered with pitch-perfect comedic timing and is guaranteed to inspire wild giggles. Sure to be an instant read-aloud classic in classrooms and libraries.–Kiera Parrott, Darien Library, CTα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. *Starred Review* Opening endpapers of orderly gray bricks introduce a community of proper Victorian animals getting about their business with smileless politesse. But Mr. Tiger, his bright-orange face a sore thumb among the elephant grays and mule-deer browns, dreams of freedom. First, he drops to all fours. His neighbors are nonplussed. Then, he rampages and roars. His neighbors are frightened. Finally, he gets naked. The village members suggest he head into the wilderness, which he thinks is a “magnificent idea.†He loves the wilderness, with all its wildness, but, in time, he misses the city and his friends. He returns only to discover that things have loosened to a happy medium. He dons some aloha attire, and all is right with the world. Closing endpapers of haphazard greenery celebrate the welcome change. Brown highlights the differences between municipal propriety and savage abandon with color and composition. The city is all upright, sepia, rectilinear precision; the wild, sweeping vistas of lush, verdant paradise, and their final amalgam form a nice balance. With its skewed humor and untamed spirit, this joyous exploration of quasi-reverse anthropomorphism will delight listeners again and again. Preschool-Grade 2. --Thom Barthelmess

Before our son was born, we decided to purchase a small library of children's books. We researched what some must have picture books were and this one made the list. And, it has been a beautiful addition to our home library. My son, now two years old, loves reading the story of Mr. Tiger and his desire to be "wild." I like that the story really celebrates that there is a little bit of wild or Mr. Tiger in all of us.The illustrations in this book fit the story perfectly. They are colorful and captivating for the intended audience.I am happy to have this book on our shelves.
This is a delightful story with poignant humor -- not laugh-out-loud, that's too easy! Mr. Tiger yearns to be himself -- to unleash his inner tiger and stop conforming to his "proper" world. He gradually pushes the limits until finally he goes the whole way -- wild in the wilderness. But even that leaves him dissatisfied -- he's lonely and misses his friends. When he returns to city life, he finds that others have followed his example and are beginning to be themselves too. I loved this book!! Loved it. I bought copies for all my grandchildren.
My kids love this book. The illustrations are bold and fun and the story is creative and engaging yet simply written to keep the attention of younger kids. The book itself is a awesome quality hardback. I feel like it's a simple story that subtly teaches nonconformity. People can take that message as drastic as they choose, but the general principle isn't bad. (Leaves room for some parent-kid commentary, if you choose to engage that.) And not all kids are going to be queued into that anyways, just the fun story of Mr. Tiger who decides to do things differently.
The artwork in this book is stunning. It reminds me of John Klassen's art a little bit. I love Peter Brown's style and his ability to direct your eye where it needs to go. One of the things I love about illustrators that author their own books is that they have the uncanny ability to make the words and pictures work together seamlessly. They play each off the other and bring both together to make the book a beautiful piece of art. Some books are just destined to be classics. This is one of them. I had a good laugh with my kids when Mr. Tiger takes things "too far". I also like the way he doesn't totally give up his old life. He just needs a change, and so he crosses over to the wild side for a bit. This book is really cute and will appeal to kids ages 2 and up. Definitely a must-have book for any kid's home library!
Everyone should at least read this! Great gift. Gave it to a few friends, and my daughter, and everyone always loves it.I love the illustrations, the colors, the way the colors tell and enhance the story, and the overlying message of nonconformity. Its too easy to send the message to kids that being a good citizen is equal to fitting in and playing your part, even if we don't mean to. I really like that the character took time away from his community to find himself, realized he missed the life that had held him back, and found when he returned that he actually made a wonderful difference just by being true to himself. ...all in a toddler way of course.get it, you'll love it too.
Peter Brown knocks it out of the park with this one. A wonderful (and important) message to accompany a goofy story about a Tiger who wished he was 'wild.' Mr. Tiger follows the Ghandi mantra: "Be the change you wish to see in the world," which I especially enjoyed. The text is sparse and it's laid across 40 pages with evocative and colorful illustrations (most picture books are 32 pages long so you get more bang for your buck with this book). Anyway, I recommend it.
Mr. Tiger Goes Wild is a beautiful book for children, conveying a wonderful message. Peter Brown is an award winning author and for this book took home the Boston Globe Horn Award among many others. At first glance, on the cover, we see a tiger in a top hat and a tuxedo surrounded by plants and trees in the forest, which makes him seem a bit out of place. This sets the tone to start the book. Brown’s use of color throughout is very smart and he uses just the right amount of pop in Mr. Tiger to show his uniqueness. The bright orange of Mr. Tiger against the mono chromatic, brown and grey muted background of the city where he lives perfectly symbolizes Mr. Tiger’s wild side. The illustrations are so simple yet they tell so much of the story and the wordless pages are just as significant to this story as the pages with text. This book is perfect for young children because the text is minimal and keeps a good, steady pace. The word bubbles are also fun for kids to read and make it easier for younger children to follow the dialogue between Mr. Tiger and the others. The wordless pages also work well for children because it helps to fluidly convey Mr. Tiger’s transformation more visually throughout the story.Upon starting the book we see Mr. Tiger in his city with all the other people who live there. Everyone stands upright and is dressed up in suits or dresses and looks like they’re just about ready for Sunday tea. However when we first see Mr. Tiger, he already seems as though he doesn’t quite belong. Between his bright orange color and the underwhelmed expression on his face he looks a bit out of place. We see Mr. Tiger going through his day to day interactions and activities which all seem a bit hum drum, until he gets a very “wild ideaâ€. First we see Mr. Tiger in a double page spread down on all four paws and his friends don’t seem to care much for this. Then Mr. Tiger gets loud ad wants to “ROARâ€, this slightly frightens the others in the city. Mr. Tigers gets progressively more wild and active as the pages turn and his friends are not quite sure what to think of it. Until one day… Mr. Tiger “went a little too farâ€. We see Mr. Tiger jump into a fountain and swim across to the other side only to come out in nothing but his birthday suit!! This is sure to cause a giggle; we turn we turn to another double page spread of Mr. Tiger but this time with no suit or top hat. The look on his face is priceless with a huge goofy smile and a tiger the way nature intended! However, no one else seemed to share in his joy and it was then suggested that if he was going to act so wild that he should go live in the wild, which he though was a great idea. Then after we see him playing in the river and climbing trees in the forest he begins to get lonely and misses his friends and his home. When Mr. Tiger returns home he is pleasantly surprised to see that not only do his friends openly welcome him back, but things have begun to change and shift toward a happy medium. Things ended well for Mr. Tiger.I really enjoyed this book and could see it being a wonderful story for any child. Brown conveys a message that is important for everyone to know, which is that it is okay to be free and to be yourself. It’s good to be different even if it’s challenged sometimes. Now, I don’t know about taking all your clothes off and jumping into a fountain! However, it’s just funny and could easily be looked past. The overall message is simple, but it’s there and important for kids of all ages to understand.
