About the Author
Garry Martin, a native Manitoban, attended Colorado College on a hockey scholarship, where he received the BA degree. He then attended Arizona State University for the MA and PhD degrees. Garry returned to Manitoba in 1966 and taught in the Department of Psychology at the University of Manitoba until his retirement at the end of 2008. He is currently a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the U of M, and he continues to supervise graduate students, teach part-time, and write and publish. He has co-authored or co-edited 8 books and over 150 journal articles on various areas in behavioral psychology. His book, Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It, with Dr. Joseph Pear, first published in 1978, is used as a primary text at many universities in 14 countries and various editions have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Korean. His research on behavioral training technologies for improving the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities and children with autism has been supported continuously by the Medical Research Council of Canada, and now the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for the past 32 years. He has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences around the world. He has supervised 38 Masters theses, and 32 PhD theses at the University of Manitoba, and has received numerous honors and awards, including induction into the Royal Society of Canada. At the 2010 Annual Convention of the Canadian Psychological Association, Garry received the CPA Education and Training Award, the most prestigious education and training award the discipline confers in Canada. Dr. Joseph J. Pear, Professor of Psychology at the University of Manitoba, received the B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University. A fellow of Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) and Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Pear has done both basic and applied research. His early applied work was with children with developmental disabilities at the St. Amant Centre, where he founded the Behaviour Modification Unit (now the Psychology Department) in the early 1970s. More recently, he developed Computer-Aided Personal System of Instruction (CAPSI), an instructional program based on the Keller Plan. CAPSI is an award winning program that is being used to teach a number of courses at University of Manitoba and at several other universities in Canada and the United States. It is also a research tool that Dr. Pear and his graduate students use to research the teaching and learning dimensions of university education. Dr. Pear has also done basic research with pigeons and fish using a tracking system that he developed. In addition to Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It with Dr. Garry Martin, Dr. Pear has written two other books: The Science of Learning and A Historical and Contemporary Look at Psychological Systems. He has also written numerous research articles and two encyclopedia articles: “Psychological Systems” in The Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology (Fourth Edition) and “Physiological Homeostasis and Learning” in Encyclopedia of the Sciences of Learning. He has received awards for Outstanding Contribution to Behaviour Analysis in Manitoba and for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology. He also received the Fred S. Martin and Pear's handbook is in its tenth edition. I have purchased 3 previous editions and in the process saw how their approach to behaviour modification evolved. The book should be useful for anyone who deals with behaviour that may need modification (e.g. teachers, coaches and clinicians); it is not only about behaviour therapy (although the book should supply clinicians with a firm theoretical foundation for the latter.I found that, like previous editions, the 10th edition describes behaviour modification well. Martin and Pear clarifies the theory behind behaviour modification in a way I find easy to read and comprehend. They do it so well that one may think you know more about the topic than you actually do. A set of questions at the end of each chapter will reveal the extent to which one has grasped the material covered in that chapter. The questions are not followed by answers - the answers must be sought in the text.Topics are neatly arranged into easily managed ("bite size") chapters. The authors often use practical examples to demonstrate theory and practice. I have used previous editions (and this one) as source book for self-teaching as well as for teaching and training students. Although behavioural approaches do not sit well with all clinicians (and theorists) the empirical evidence for the efficacy of behaviour modification (and behaviour therapy) cannot be ignored.
First off, a lot of these negative reviews seem to be from students forced to read the book and weren't interested in the first place or they are about the packaging and highlights (which, as we all know should not be reviewed on the product page).If you are, like me, in a Master's program for clinical psychology (i.e. to be a therapist)-- BUY THIS BOOK. If you are in an undergraduate psychology program--BUY THIS BOOK. If you are a parent of young children/teens or future parent-- BUY THIS BOOK. If you are interested in improving your life (e.g. weight loss or any other kind of behavior change for self-improvement)-- BUY THIS BOOK.My point is--this book is very informative. The authors describe the pros and cons of the various types of reinforcemet as well as descriptions of plans and which work best in certain situations.And if you're considering an older edition (I had the 5th or 6th edition from my undergrad years), buy the 9th edition instead. I thought it was like a new book. The older ones are good but this was far better. It can be pricey but the international copy is about half the price (and is exactly the same besides the difference in British spelling). Well worth the change but if that option is unavailable and you are interested enough--get this book! It was worth the money for me and I think and hope it will be for you as well.Thank you, good luck, and enjoy.
This is a good aide to learning about DADGAD tuning. I have learned a great deal, but it is a little sparse for the price and seems poorly organized to me. I am overall pleased with it, and would probably buy it again, knowing what I know now, but you might want to research to see if this is the book you were looking for. Assumes some prior experience with the guitar.
This is a very detailed book about behavior modification. It literally traces the history of behavioral modification from its origins and progresses into actual techniques that can be used in a variety of setting. Some of the chapters are quite dense, yet interesting. There is a comprehensive summary and the authors do a wonderful job with breaking down large units of information into readable points. There is a useful guide for functional analysis provided. The behavior contract is generic, but a decent basis for an individualized one. Finally, many behavioral methods are explained in simple terms and there are numerous examples that illustrate their usefulness.
This book covers so much and so clearly. It is a serious introduction to an important topic. The chapters are so well laid out that a mature and/or perpetual student (I am both) can work through it without signing up for the course. People in the mental health professions have got caught up in neurological advances, solution-focused therapies, mindfulness and so on. A solid background in behavior modification is an equally important part of the picture.
Really easy to read and the chapters are very short. It easily explains the main theories of behavior modification and gives great examples. Also has an index and glossary section for easy referencing!
Dry, poorly formatted, strange ordering of subject matters.
If you want to understand how to handle mentally challenged or handi-capped persons, you will see how to moderate their fits of frustration and reduce negative tantrums. Very useful for parents with autism.

*Sigh* This graphic novel is a hot mess.The first issue focuses on Orc Dave. It is interesting and good worldbuilding, but it is also repetitive and tangential. Why include a flashback at what will be the beginning of a bound volume if it is only relevant to the rest of the volume in the tiniest way? Why not save it until you are actually going to tie it to the main storyline?But, to be honest, I would rather have read more about Orc Dave than the rest of the issues in this volume.The next issues sees the Rat Queens fighting a giant hypnotoad and…haven’t we seen this before? The greatest weakness of the comic is that it isn’t super interested in doing new things. The hypnotoad sequence ends with Betty the smidgen thief licking it. I know that Betty’s impulsivity (and drug use) are basic character traits, but to make such a stupid decision so important to the rest of the comic grates.The rest of the volume gets into the titular The Colossal Magic Nothing. I won’t get into it, because there is no way to explain it that makes sense and isn’t spoilery. With the big reveal at the end, I see what Wiebe was doing, but it winds up being a disjointed mess. I like the idea, but the execution leaves much to be desired.The artwork is good, with some cool visuals, but I wasn’t a big fan of the intentionally simplistic style adopted for some of the flashbacks and surreal sequences.
One of the oddest moments in the ongoing Rat Queens series is, without a doubt, the abrupt ending to volume three that separates magical half-demon Hannah from the rest of the group and her friends. The volume ended on a bizarrely depressing note and (aside from a single issue in #16 which is not included in any of the trade volumes) was immediately ignored and seemingly retconned out of the series in volume four. The series is at its best when it mixes drama with over the top humor and the soft reboot of volume four was a great way to reestablish that tone. Creator Kurtis Wiebe has said that volume three is still canon, but it was hard to see how... until now. The amazing new volume manages to redeem the seemingly weak link volume of the series by showing how the team managed to "save" Hannah from her dark fate, while also opening the door to some amazing new potential arcs. The book at first seems to be going down a similar dark and depressing turn (including a new villain who seemingly wipes characters out of existence) but the twist ending is a gut punch that shows how good Wiebe is with these characters. Owen Gieni remains a spectacular artist for this series (especially with all the past turn overs and behind the scenes issues with past contributors), especially during the sequences when the Queens start to trip and the art shifts styles to match their hallucinations.
Gah this story has turned into a hot tangled mess. And I understand that is not my story but I’m just not enjoying Rat Queens anymore. Which sucks because I LOVED vol 1 n 2 until I found out who did the art. Honestly this volume was just hard to read because of spoiler plot devices which made for a lot of “wtf is going on narratively†moments. It made it hard to enjoy the times where the Queens were being their awesome selfs and than not for plot purposes. I don’t how to describe it. Like obviously the story is serialized but it stopped feeling that way at the end of vol 3. How everything’s tied together in vol 5 is unsatisfiying to me, and still leaves us with a lot of questions. I just don’t know if I care enough to find out anymore.
I have been following Rat Queens since volume 1 and I am finding that the storyline is so random and disjointed that it is like badly written fanfiction - and the art varies between excellent and terrible. This volume has some good storytelling and backstory and then heads off into a mess where it seems that the writers are trying to be cleverer in their storytelling than the reader wants or needs - and/or than they are capable of telling. Hopefully Volume 6 gets better - but the series has been so uneven that I have no clue. Maybe they are writing the plots using random rolls of dice ?
This volume teaches the Rat Queens about the consequences of their previous actions. Each queen gets their own story and moment to shine. While I enjoyed the character development, I am not sure what effects, if any, this will have on later stories. The ending left me confused about what had just happened until I re-read the title and decided a colossal magic nothing just happened.
It was confusing towards the midddle, as I didn't know where the story was going. But the ending made some things clear. You should read the previous books before jumping into this one.
Rat Queens continues to be the BEST ensemble book on the market. This volume is heavy on the Orc Dave backstory and pulls at a few heartstrings before diving right back into one of the funniest storylines of the series that stems from licking a frog and I'll just leave it at that. Great book!

I wish this book was recommended for business school. It would have made studying for exams much easier. The best parts about the book are:(1) Descriptions and examples of various financial instruments(2) Insights into the trading process(3) A look into back office functionsA lot of the knowledge from this book cannot be derived in one course at school, and most schools do not teach about the backdrop behind the markets. Overall, a very useful book for business students, traders, bankers, and anyone interested the markets or finance in general.
The topics suggested by the title (settlement, etc) are well addressed, but the first half of the book is dedicated to marketplaces and here the book comes up short. Many recent market developments, even those that were in place at the time of writing, appear to be inadequately or inaccurately addressed. Examples:ATSes/ECNs are much more center stage than the book would suggest and are not sufficiently discussedHybrid market mechanics are not discussed muchDark pool liquidity is not addressedOptions market making is not addressed beyond a single paragraph that sheds no light into how Citadel et al make continuous markets electronicallyAnd unfortunately, given that the major development of Reg NMS took place after the book, this makes the marketplace info even less useful.
A great book to get a general overview of brokerage firms and their activities.It goes into verbose details about all aspects of the fictional firm which may make it seem to others as dry but to me, it makes the concepts being explained very clear.As of 2014, it might be dated (published in 2006) but still a good tool.
I enjoyed reading the book. I learned a lot on the sections entitled "Products That We Offer", "The Marketplaces and Order Management" and "The Trade-Processing System". I highly recommend this book!
I bought this book as someone recommended me reading this to understand the trading and behind the scenes stuff. It is easy to follow and very detailed, but of course very old and now we have everything computerized. This book was written before the technology times. For $4 it is not bad.

This book is being used a textbook for my UNIX Shell Programming class. I believe it is really well written and gives a quick and efficient overview of UNIX scripting. This book is not for a complete novice. To appreciate this book, you definitely need at least some experience maneuvering around a UNIX or Linux terminal. It also doesn't hurt to have a firm understanding of programming concepts like variables and control structures. The book gives some great examples but on occasion you will have to do some additional research on the web to fill in some blanks. This is to be expected as UNIX is very powerful and feature filled and covering it all would take a book much thicker than this one.
Let me start by saying that most of the Unix tools like sed, awk, regular expressions, even vi, deserve their own specialized books and there are excellent books on these subjects.This is the only book you need as a general foundation to overall Unix shell environment. It is more convenient to start with this book and then dive deeper with the help of books like "Learning VI", "Mastering Regular Expressions". Yes awk is not covered, but it is not a big loss since awk was kind of not the part of native tools and it most definitely needed its own book to master as well as Perl.Then after you are done, most definitely for a daily use obtain "Unix Power Tools"This book is excellent for two audiences.For beginning programmers new to Unix. It should be their only general purpose Unix book, followed by specialized books. Also it serves to veterans that were away for a while from Unix and need just to brush-up very quickly without going to minute details of every tool.I for one, used this book as part of both audiences. I got acquainted with Unix with help of this book as well as refreshed my knowledge a year ago after long hiatus.
This is my second copy. I made the mistake of loaning out the previous copy, and it grew legs and disappeared. They got the old edition, and now I have the new one. "Unix Shell Programming" is loaded with good information. I only get to write shell scripts once in awhile, and sometimes I really need the book as a reference to refresh my memory. And, there are plenty of examples in the book. Great for newbies, and great reference for us old-timers.
This third edition is still based on the classic UNIX shell programming book Kochan put out in the late eighties. The benefit of this edition is that it includes POSIX standard support for constructs supported by the Bash and Korn shells. It is no longer restricted to the Bourne shell.There are many thoughtful insights appearing throughout the book, which makes it an excellent reference book. If using it as a text book, it is a little slow getting into the actual programming; you may find yourself bogged down in regular expressions that are covered in chapter 4.Overall, this is one of the better books I have seen on Shell Programming.
A clear and concise intro text for beginners. Wording is kept short clear and to-the-point. Examples are very clear. Exercises are not tricky and test your plain knowledge of what you covered. Chapters are short. It is clearly a beginner oriented text and is not intended for advanced users.
Book is great. Great examples and good reference for class with a subpar instructor. Shipping was okay I ordered about three weeks before the fall semester began and received it a week and a half into class. Thankfully I was able to borrow from a friend in that time frame.
This is one of the best text books I've ever read. And I mean EVER. I have never had a text book that has kept my interest over a single chapter, let alone several chapters in one sitting. Kochan and Wood really get their point across in a subject that can otherwise be dry and boring. They really bring it to life. I love this book!

About the Author
Dawnie Wolfe Steadman, Ph.D. Dr. Steadman received her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Binghamton University, SUNY, following three years as an Assistant Professor at Iowa State University. Dr. Steadman serves as a forensic anthropology consultant to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner and several New York agencies. Her research interests are in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. She has conducted excavations and skeletal analyses of several historic and prehistoric archaeological sites in Illinois, Iowa, and New York. Dr. Steadman is particularly interested in paleopathology, population genetic modeling of past populations, and the application of forensic anthropology to human rights investigations.

Yes, most of the recipes are vintage, some are riffs on familiar crowd-pleasers, many have been tweaked to give old, tried-and-true recipes a subtle Beekman Farm charm. What you'll find in this book is a stupendous compilation of great recipes, and just because they are vintage that does NOT mean that these are the same versions that you have on your old recipe cards. The authors term this assortment of recipes "Heirloom", well, maybe for them they are. I can't call them heirloom until I start passing them along to the young cooks in my family. I do anticipate that will happen. In the meantime, I can definitely call them "keepers".In fact, I've got a relative's bridal shower to attend in a few months and I plan to present her with a copy of this book in addition to something from her list. Why include this book? For one thing, the recipes are that good and they are not difficult for an inexperienced cook. They are recipes that every baker should have in her/his repertoire. For another thing, it is a beautiful book with stunning photography of the finished dishes, vintage kitchenware, and pastoral farm settings. And, last but not least, the authors have included something precious: At the end of each season, (that's how the recipes are divided), they have included ruled, blank, full pages designated for your own family heirloom recipes. I plan to write in some of our family recipes before wrapping up the book for giving.I found it interesting that I recently reviewed another cookbook actually called "Keepers". In it, I was expecting to find great, old-time, tried-and-true recipes--but I didn't find them. The authors of that book used the term to describe recently developed recipes that are tasty and easy to make, therefore easy to turn to in a pinch on a weeknight. In my review I said that I need more in "keeper" recipes: Not only do they have to be straightforward and not complicated, I need to be able to turn to them on the morning of a large, holiday, family/friend gathering. They need to stand the test of time, too. They may be recipes friends and family request time and time again. Little did I know, what I was searching for was in the process of being printed and bound: Because the recipes in this Beekman Farm book are exactly what I was describing.I first saw this cookbook before it was published. It was a temporary download that I received from the publisher for review. Scrutinizing the preliminary pages, it didn't take me long to realize that I had to have my own copy! As you can see by the "Verified Purchase" tag above my review, I now have it in hand. But since I did have the download, I can honestly say I've been working with this book since way before its September 10 public debut.I must admit that I may be biased concerning this cookbook: I collect vintage kitchen items. I attend estate sales as a fun hobby, and when I walk in the front door I ask the way to the kitchen, If I see a recipe file box, I scarf it up and every once in a while I find a valuable jewel in the form of an old, readable, workable, wonderful recipe. I guess, with this type of experience under my belt, I'm not only biased towards vintage and heirloom, but I know a bit about what I'm writing here.YOU CAN STOP READING HERE, but if you are still undecided, I've included a long list of my favorites below to tempt you. It seems that the Table of Contents and the Index that you can see with the "Look Inside" feature doesn't tell you much about the recipes, so here goes:Cakes:--There is a fruitcake based on Black Fruitcake, which is a Christmas favorite down in the Virgin Islands.--How about a buche de Noel made with a raspberry filling? I might finally make one this year!--A coconut layer cake that gives Alton Brown's recipe a challenge;--I love this recipe: Creamsicle Angel Food Cake.--The Cardamom Cake with Coffee Glaze is made in a bundt pan.--A banana cake that is nothing like a quick bread; it's made in a 9 x 13 pan.--Truly a winner: Diablo Food Cake with Custard Sauce; this twist on Devil's Food Cake includes cayenne pepper, cinnamon, allspice and brown sugar.--Plum Upside-Down Cake; the authors call this a "back pocket" recipe and it is because you can use any stone fruit, but I tried it with an assortment of plums and it was beautiful and luscious.--A One-Bowl Chocolate Almond Cake; it was so very easy!--Red Currant Jelly Cake; pieces of jelly are tucked into the batter.Puddings:--Toasted Coconut Rice Pudding with Mango Sauce;--Double Chocolate Pudding, Banana Pudding with home-made Vanilla Wafers, Butterscotch Pudding with scotch;--Orange-Chocolate Pots de Crème and Vanilla Panna Cotta with a center of lemon curd;Riffs on Favorites:--Chocolate Rocky Road Potstickers: Rocky Road ice cream add-ins (minus the ice cream) are stuffed into wonton wrappers and gently fried in a skillet.--Chocolate-Espresso Soup: Take hot chocolate, thicken it up, ladle it into soup bowls and top with marshmallows.--Remember the "Crown Jewel Cake" from the Jello Cookbook? Here it is updated and gorgeous, and it doesn't rely on Jello...--Pumpkin Pie is accomplished with Kabocha Squash.--Remember Hello Dollies? These are made with cream of coconut, but you can sub with sweetened condensed milk to make the 60's version.There are also some wonderful pies and ice creams and crisps (and more). The ice creams are simple because they do not include eggs, so no custard to make--just some cornstarch, (Honey Ice Cream, Peanut Butter Ice Cream, Pistachio-Chip. Buttermilk Pie with a pecan crust was elegant in its simplicity. Another wonderful pie is the Cranberry-Apple Custard Pie. The Roasted Rhubarb Crisp is delectable.Obviously, I highly recommend this book. Check out the other Beekman 1802 book: The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Cookbook: Heirloom fruits and vegetables, and more than 100 heritage recipes to inspire every generation. It was published a few years back and has gotten great reviews (an amazing, solid, five-star average).
I enjoy cookbooks. The recipes in this good are great. The only thing that I would have liked more is more pictures of the end products. There are lots of pictures of the house and pictures on the walls and kitichen tools. I would have like it more if there had been a picture of the food.
OMG! Try the cowboy cookies- so yummy, words cannot even begin to describe. One of my favorite new cookierecipes.I doubled the recipe, used high quality granola with huge amount of nuts and seeds ( La Brea Bakery -Original )Also added more vanilla than recipe called for.A twist to my success.... Baked using convection oven....... longer than recipe called for..... until really crispy/brown.In order to get crispy to perfection- I reduce heat to some 200 for slow longer baking.Can't wait to try the lemon bars-----this next week.I have over 500 cookbooks- This is a keeper and so lovely to give as a gift to someone special.I'm leaving on vacation and will stay with a friend. I am providing copy of this book as a hostess gift.
To be honest, when I initially spotted this book, I thought it would be a sophisticated grouping of recipes that were reserved for high tea or fancy occasions that would demand a discerning palate.Then I looked in between the covers and I realized I was wrong. Very wrong. Shame on my peepers.......that's why "never judge a book by it's cover" was penned for folks like myself.What this book gifted to me was an awakening of bygone pleasures that come in the form of not just recipes, but the entire presentation of everything within the covers of this marvelous cookbook. A coffee table book for the eyes as well as a cookbook for the palate.Before I mention the recipes, it was the set-up of this book that gave me real joy. I am a old romantic with a love of bygone days of lace and history and old-fashioned hard work. This book "feels" old-fashioned, it "feels" antiquated, it "feels" like a long lost treasure found in a dusty attic.Just by looking at the front, you get insight into what is waiting for you within the covers: the autumnal colors used throughout, andthe styling/props used to food style and set the scene. It shouts of a style of years past and I think that is what the authors were wanting to convey to readers.Open the cover and the first thing to greet you is the inside cover paper the reminds you of a Victorian home perhaps or other genteel setting of years past. It even has a plaque for you to inscribe those to whom this book will become a part of their family history. Copper pots and pans, cake tins, heirloom pieces, and glass stands with berry branches are part of the scenes created to present these delicious treasures made by the amazing team of Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell. They have such a sincere desire to keep the treasures and history of this majestic property as pristine and grand as it had been since its glory days and it seems that they are doing so brilliantly.The chapters are broken down into the seasons with recipes appropriate to each, though we all know that dessert, regardless of time or space, can be devoured anytime! A short poem cited or quote written, greets the beginning of each sason. As each recipe is presented, a small introduction is given and the steps are broken down. Space is then allotted for any notes you might want to make for future reference. A very sweet set up!There are accompanying photo's of most recipes, and for those without photo's, they really weren't neccesary. Instead there is luscious photography of still life which can be as simple as a jar of shelled pistachios or fabulous photo's of the Beekman home in various stages of the seasons or mismatched plates stacked high and regally. A white peony resting in a dessert glass sits daintily on a veranda overlooking the Beekman vista; copper tins, rubbed to show off their years of sturdy devotion, might grace another page. A couple of pages are located in the back to scribble notes on your own family favorites so that (as the authors state), ".....it becomes not our cookbook, but your cookbook".If you go to their website, "Beekman1802.com", you'll get even more interesting and intriguing information on how this quiet little farm in a quiet little town, with quiet and charming townsfolk, became a fabulous destination point for so many people. All this through hardships and challenges that brought Beekman 1802 into the force it has now become, through the author's website, cable show, and other venues of exposure.OK.......................so what about the recipes? I feel that the point of the book was to bring vintage recipes and give them an update, not to change them, but to make sure that they work perfectly. Ingredients used years ago were at the mercy of what was available. Here they are kept intact but with a refreshment in flavor, but with the essence kept the same. Since there have been many other great reviews of these recipes, I will mention a smattering of sweet creations to give you a peek into what's waiting for your palate:WINTER:So... what's your pleasure? A real old fashioned lemon meringue pie? Salty nougat fudge brownies? How about Blondies with white chocolate and macadamia nuts? Then there's the German Chocolate Cake that will knock your everlovin' socks off!SPRING:Love this season...........think Easter and a beautiful table laden with delectable, fresh sweets such as a "Do It All Yellow Cake" that can be turned into whatever dessert you want, in this case for their suggestion of "Boston Cream Pie"! If though if you want, they have a wonderful "One-Bowl Chocolate Almond Cake" that has a glaze that is perfecto!SUMMER:Sometimes you want dishes that are quick and not too demanding of being in a hot kitchen during this season so it would be most appropriate to have "Baked Stone Fruits" with Cannoli Cream or "Butter Pecan Ice Cream" or "Banana Pudding with Vanilla Wafers" though the "Lemon Meringue Pie" from the winter season is always a sure favorite. I would mention that in the "Fall" section, there is a "Anything-In-The-Cupboard-No-Bake-Cookie" that even a novice or "anti-baker" could love and can be perfect for summer.FALL:The best season for baking, don't you think? "French Toast Bread Pudding" or "Puff Pastry Apple Strudel" would be a fabulous way to get the season started, along with the necessary "NY Cheesecake". Bread puddings, pies, and cakes that use moist, plump fruits of the season are also a part of this seasonal parade of sweets that will have anyone drifting themselves to the kitchen, as soon as they smell the waft of these gems.So yes, this is one of my new favorites for feeding the masses and they are coming................to quote a quote from the back of the book, "Parting is such sweet sorrow, especially when you can take some dessert with you." I fell in love with this cookbook at the Williams-Sonoma but opted to purchase it from Amazon. So far I have made only 2 recipes - the Banana Pudding and the Lavender Lemon Bars. The Lemon Bars were wonderful. Just enough sweet with a wonderful tart flavor. The Banana Pudding (I opted to make the vanilla wafers) was too sweet. For people who like sweet, it was great, but I could only eat a few bites before I was overcome with the sweetness. Luckily, there are lines at the bottom of each page where you can add your own notes and I will simply update the recipe to alter it for my family's tastes. I do feel that I will have to check sugar amounts for every recipe though.

Isla McRae is living in Creede, Colorado and working at her brother’s restaurant. She fell in love in Scotland with a local boy, but his father had no use for her as she wasn’t from a well-connected and rich family like his. So Isla decided to leave Scotland with her siblings and head to America and out west for a better life.Asa Young is in the mining business and is the foreman of one of the local mines. He’s been in love with Isla for a couple years, but hasn’t had the nerve to ask her out or to tell her his feelings to see if she feels the same way. With the upcoming town celebration, he decides to take a chance and escort her to the celebration. As they start to spend more time together, they realize they both are attracted to each other. But Isla’s past is keeping her from expressing herself to Asa as she feels he will desert her as well. But then she realizes he’s the foreman of the mine and so he isn’t from money and he has been seen around town with her. So what happens when she finds out he’s not the foreman but also the owner of the mine as well? Will she change her mind and not see him again so she doesn’t get her heart broken twice.Can these two overcome their pasts and their heartbreak and learn to love each other. Will Isla’s Angel mom help her to see what she is missing out on if she lets Asa go?I enjoyed this story. It shows that even though you have gone through heartache, you can open your heart up a second time to love. I’m looking forward to seeing how the cousins make out in their search for husbands. I recommend this book.
Isla MacRae has sworn off love after being lead on by a man at home in Scotland, then told she's not good enough by his father just before he married another. Now in Creede with her remaining family, she is the only one still unwed.Asa Young secretly owns the mine where he acts as foreman and is very taken with Isla. But while she is friendly with him, she hasn't truly noticed his interest, nor truthfully her own in him.Mam MacRae promised four nearly destitute girls, cousins from good families, that if they followed her to Creede, she would find them husbands. Then she appears to Isla, enlisting her help with the task. Protecting the most delicate of the girls from an unscrupulous man leads Asa to believe she isn't interested, but when she explains, he understands what had truly happened. Trouble comes their way when he admits he owns his mine, and Isla fears he'll break her heart like the man in Scotland had. Then work their way through that dilemma, but then the rains come... hard.
I love this series and this book is another family reunion in more ways than one. After 36 books the citizens of Creede and Bachelor are family and Mama M visiting her daughter, Isla, is definitely appropriate. I love the descriptions of Mam and her interactions with the family. Jo Noelle has managed to bring us a story with romance, humor, strong story line and a few twists. A totally enjoyable book. I hope I don't keep my guardian angel as busy as the people of Creede do theirs.
Reading about how their Mam became their guardian angel made this family of books so enjoyable! I am so glad Isla finally found her happily ever after!Jo Noelle books are superbly written, sometimes amusing, always heartfelt. I highly recommend this book!
I loved watching Isla and Asa, with the fun help of Mama M, work though their self imposed restraints and find where they are supposed to be! This story kept me reading from beginning to end, without putting it down!!! Truly a great read!!
This book was so good, it was fun , scarey, and exciting. Asa and Isla were wonderful, the mama took care of everyone. I think She was the best. Thank you. Jo Noelle.
