This book is a true must read for any safety professional who is or is trying to bring about a shift in their safety "culture" approach. Currently, I have read through this twice - as much as we feel, as safety professionals, that we get it - Terry and Shawn continue to show us (me?) that there are many things we take for granted and shouldn't. The book illustrates clearly and profoundly the importance of having a "TRUE" safety strategy, one that is not just communicated, but EFFECTIVELY communicated at all levels throughout the organization. Although all the STEPs may not apply to everyone, I found that I took something positive away from each one although some more than others. I challenged my management team with the questions in each of the STEPs and found that some have quite different interpretations than that of the main senior managment team - which leads to less clear expectations to those reporting up to those management members. As a senior safety professional in a senior role in my company I recommend ALL of you look at having everyone who are leading others in your pursuits to safety excellence read this book and participate in the questions and exercises. To me, those make the whole book - it is tangible and reflective of how well the message has been previously communicated and how to move forward with the message and the strategy decided upon. As always, Shawn and Terry, you continue to make me stronger and more educated everytime we have some form of contact or communication. Thank you for saying what it is so clearly that even I can comprehend it!

Dimon, former commander of the palace guard and now the leader of the rebellious Red Fox Clan, leaned on a windowsill, looked upward, and scowled. He was in a room on the top floor of the Castle Araluen keep. The south tower loomed above him, several floors higher. He came here regularly, to stare up at the ninth floor of the south tower, where Princess Cassandra, King Duncan and their men had taken refuge. Occasionally, Dimon would see movement on the balcony that surrounded the ninth floor and once he had recognized Cassandra herself peering over into the courtyard below. He cursed bitterly when he saw her, but she was unaware of his presence. The people on the balcony rarely seemed to look in his direction. They were more interested in the courtyard, and Cassandra’s archers had already taken a savage toll on anyone who moved incautiously down there, straying too far from the shelter of the keep walls. Under Dimon’s leadership, the castle had been taken by soldiers of the Red Fox Clan. He had chanced upon the Red Fox Clan some years before. They were a disorganized, poorly motivated group of malcontents who protested against the law that allowed a woman to succeed to the throne. The law had been put in place by Cassandra’s grandfather, and it meant that Cassandra would eventually become Queen of Araluen in her own right. The Red Fox Clan clung stubbornly to the old tradition that only a male heir could succeed to the throne—a position Dimon heartily endorsed, as he was distantly related to Cassandra and, so far as he knew, the only possible male heir. Under a false name, he had joined the Clan and quietly worked his way to the top echelons of power within it. The Clan was big on angry talk and short on action. Dimon, on the other hand, was an expert orator, capable of rousing the passions of an audience and swaying them to his point of view. He had a powerful and charismatic personality and an inborn ability to make people like and respect him. He rose rapidly in the Clan, until he was appointed as their overall leader. He organized them and motivated them until they had become a potent and efficient secret army. He pandered to their beliefs and, most important, he gave them an agenda and a goal—rebellion against the Crown. His cause was aided by the fact that King Duncan had been an invalid for some time and Cassandra, his daughter, was acting as Regent in his place, providing an obvious example of the result of the law change. Dimon used the Red Fox Clan as a tool to further his own ends. He planned to usurp the throne and have himself crowned king. He saw the Red Fox Clan as the vehicle by which he would achieve this ambition. His chief obstacle, he believed, was Cassandra’s husband, Sir Horace—the paramount knight of Araluen and the commander of the army. Horace was a highly skilled warrior and an expert strategist and tactician. He was assisted in his leadership role by the Ranger Gilan, Commandant of the redoubtable Ranger Corps and Horace’s longtime friend. For Dimon to succeed, these two had to be lured away from Castle Araluen and, preferably, killed. Accordingly, he had devised a plan whereby Horace and Gilan set out to the north to quell a rebellion raised by a small force of the Red Fox Clan, taking most of the castle’s garrison with them. They were intercepted along the way by a much larger force of Sonderland mercenaries and Red Fox Clan members. Outnumbered three or four to one, Horace’s men had staged a fighting retreat to an ancient hill fort. Although they were currently besieged there by their ambushers, Dimon knew that a leader of Horace’s ability wouldn’t stay contained for long. It was vital that Dimon should act quickly to seize the throne. Initially, all had gone well. Dimon had tricked his way past Castle Araluen’s impregnable walls and massive drawbridge with a force of Red Fox Clan troops and came within an inch of capturing Cassandra and her father. But then Maikeru, Cassandra’s Nihon-Jan master swordsman, had interfered, holding Dimon and his men at bay long enough for Cassandra and Duncan to retreat to the upper levels of the south tower with a small force of loyal palace guards and archers. The eighth and ninth floors of the south tower had been built as a last refuge in the event that the castle was captured. A section of the spiral stairway, just below the eighth floor, could be removed, leaving attackers with no access to the upper two floors—while the defenders could move between the eighth and ninth floors via an internal flight of timber stairs. The refuge was stocked with food and weapons, and large rainwater cisterns in the roof above the ninth floor provided water for the defenders. So far, Cassandra had resisted his attempts to force his way into the eighth floor of the tower. But now, he had an idea that might just prove to be her undoing. He turned as he heard a tentative knock at the door. “Lord Dimon? Are you there?” He recognized the voice. It was Ronald, the leader of his small force of engineers and siege specialists. “Come in,” Dimon called. The door opened to admit the engineer. Like many of his kind, he was an older man, his gray hair denoting years of experience in his craft. He hesitated, deferentially. All of Dimon’s men knew that their leader was in a foul mood since the Nihon-Jan swordsman had foiled his plan for a quick result. “What is it?” Dimon said testily, unreasonably annoyed by the man’s nervousness. “The materials have arrived for your device, my lord,” the engineer told him. “We can begin building it immediately.” For the first time in several days, a smile crossed Dimon’s face. He rubbed his hands together in anticipation. “Excellent,” he said. “Now we can make things extremely unpleasant for my cousin Cassandra. Extremely unpleasant.”

There’s not much rationale as to why lonely planet chose each individual place or a hearty list of things to see or do. I’ve also been to many of these states and countries and would not personally recommend some of them. Detroit, Jacksonville, Baja California, Mexico, Lanzarote, Spain. These are not only some of the most disappointing places I’ve traveled, but safety is questionable. I mean seriously, Detroit is listed in the top 10 cities around the world. Please! 😂
The book is well done, and the options for all groups and kind of travelers are vast. I was very satisfied when finished the book, and already made a short list for future trips.Keep it on Lonely Planet!!

I read the book twice. The first time I read it in bits and pieces and, frankly, didn't get a lot out of it. The second time I sat down, focused and read it as a whole; the second approach was much more valuable. So, I recommend that you take the time to read the book in a focused matter; otherwise, if you're like me, you may not get the book's import.Next, you need to understand that the book has a number of mathematical concepts that for a non-mathematician like me, takes some effort to grasp. There are mathematical concepts that I believe that I only dimly understand even after some effort to do so. However, I concluded that this probably more on my shortcomings rather than the author's.So, if you're going to read the book, commit to do so, and, unless you've got a broader mathematical background than I have (one college calculus course), prepare to be challenged. The more I considered the book after my second reading, the more that I felt the challenges merited my effort. I think that it will reward your effort as well.What are the rewards? Most are familiar with the "butterfly effect;" the idea that a butterfly flapping its wings in Argentina, for instance, can cause a tornado in Kansas. The book discusses, among many things, "sensitive dependence," the reality that sometimes small changes can have exponentially large effects across time, and maybe a fairly short time. But there's much more.To my surprise, the book challenges the belief that mathematics can adequately, and always, describe reality. In doing so the book compares the realities faced by physicists and mathematicians. Chaos has defined the mathematical dynamical qualities, of being (1) recurrent, (2) deterministic and (3) sensitive dependence in its initial state. A physical system may be described as chaotic, but it may be difficult, or impossible, to be assured that it possesses all three of these qualities. The author describes why computers can't model chaos systems.Another surprising observation of the book is that we probably can't determine the initial physical state of a table, a garden filled with rabbits, etc., with as much precision as we think. This inability is due to the concept of "noise." Read the book to see what "noise" is and why it affects our ability to make predictions.Chaotic systems are non-linear. The book considers scientific inquiry prior to, and during much of, the 20th century, which dealt with linear systems, and how that experience, and some of the mathematical concepts developed for that experience, was upended by chaos as it developed during the 20th century. So, the book has a history of science component, which I found interesting.Models, such as the ones used for weather forecasting, are examined in detail. The strengths, weaknesses, and evolution of modeling receive careful examination. Can a model, even one with 10,000,000 variables ever truly permit accurate forecasting? Read to find out.Lastly, the author occasionally considers the concept of "truth." If the model and/or the math is bad or inadequate, can one get truth from any effort to model reality. He tells the story of three baseball umpires who explain their views of the game. One says: "I calls 'em as I sees 'me." The second says: "I calls 'em as they are." The third says: "They ain't, until I calls 'em." The author says that chaos pushes us towards the philosophical position of the third umpire. Focus and I think you'll find your efforts rewarded.
I enjoy this short introduction series. I have read several books from this series and have found that it is a good way to learn about topics I have always wanted to learn about but never found the time to study in depth. Nevertheless, I was a little disappointed with this book.I have heard about chaos theory for years and 'the butterfly effect,' that chaos theory invokes has almost become cliché. Yet, I didn't understand what chaos theory was. That is why I picked up this book. Now, after reading it, if I understand rightly, it seems like chaos is an apparent lack of order within a system and chaos theory is an attempt to measure and model uncertainty within particular systems. Even though there is apparent disorder there is an underlying order in which small events can lead to complex results, thus the famous 'butterfly effect.' of chaos theory. The theory actually arose from attempts to understand and model weather patterns, and to predict future weather. It was out of the need to understand uncertainty in weather that the science grew.That was about as far as I got in my understanding of the ideas contained within. The author claimed readers didn't need to be mathematicians to understand what he was saying about chaos. Sure, he never threw any formulas at me. Yet, much of the concepts and jargon was derived from math. I feel to really appreciate what he was saying about chaos theory one needs a solid background in math. I found some of the jargon and math ideas intimidating and didn't feel like I was comprehending all of the concepts that the author was trying to communicate.Again, could have the author communicated the concepts better, or does the reader need the background to understand what the author was saying?I will leave that up to other readers to decide. Maybe they will appreciate the thoughts contained within better than I did. Yet, regardless, I recommend books from this series. It is a good way to quickly get up to speed on intellectual topics in vogue. I hope that the editors continue to produce new books in this series.
This book is more than just an introduction to chaos. it is a deep dive in the question of uncertainty, noise and modeling accuracy, including mathematical, scientific, statistical and philosophical points of view. it offer a deep analysis and great food for thought. while the first part of the book is ready to follow down to the details, the second part becomes increasingly more complex, requiring a deeper know-how to be correctly comprehended. But at the dentist the goal of the book was just to be a short introduction.
I found this in an interesting, but difficult read. That is not to say it was not a very helpful introduction, but this is a very complex and potentially daunting subject. This 176 page read serves as a very good springboard to a whole lot more reading! Unfortunately, I can see myself doing a lot more studying in this area; but that's the fun of it! I must admit that I enjoy learning about math, science, and philosophy; and this has plenty of all those things! Pardon me, but my "geek" is showing! How embarrassing!I would recommend this book to those who enjoy science or math, but beware, this can easily lead to much heavier reading. Consider yourself warned!
This book takes a complex subject and adds even more complexity. The author good get to the point much more quickly than he does.

For as long as this marvelous book has been in print, I am always appalled to find so many intelligent people ostensibly graced with a post graduate liberal education that have no knowledge of it. It is a comprehensive study of religion, myth, and their origins and how they are all intertwined in every society. Daunting in size, even in the abridged edition, it is singular in that the facts and conclusions are all based either on creditable ancient sources or mostly on direct study of primitive, isolated societies still in existence during Frazier's life. There is a minimum of speculation and a maximum of conclusion based on comparison of identical or very similar cultural beliefs and practices. The effect on literature alone is reason enough to read this book.
Yes, this is the abridged version, but it still is over 15k locations in the study of ancient ritual and magical practices. Different cultures and different locations perhaps, but so often humanity came to the same conclusions. It's really quite amazing. Having now read this, it's a reminder of how much great literature is out there that I had never read. The King of the Wood will definitely stay with me forever.Seriously, if you don't have this get it now.
In The Golden Bough, James George Frazer, an expert social anthropologist, explains the ancient origins of the world's myths, rituals, and religions. He shows the similarities between many cultures' strange superstitions, such as animal and human sacrifice, fertility ritual, community cleansing rituals, and others.He begins with the question of why, at Nemi in prehistoric Greek times, a warrior priest known as the King of the Wood kept his position by fighting for his life, which could be threatened at any time by his successor and murderer. By attempting to explain this ancient tradition, Frazer examines similarities between religious beliefs and shows how the belief in magic and the worship of nature was gradually transformed into the worship of religious kings and gods.Controversially, many elements of Christianity are included, such as Christ's crucifixion and the fact that many Christian holidays coincide with the dates of prehistoric pagan rituals. For the diligent skeptic of Frazer's ideas, I would advise reading the full, multi-volume edition, which includes the archeological evidence for the theories.This book is ESSENTIAL for the studies of mythology, religion, or anthropology.
I am re-reading this book. I had forgotten how easy the author's writing is to read. Although it's a 19th century book, the writing seems more modern. The Kindle version is very handy. If you haven't read it, this is worth reading. The legend the author researched and described is at the root of many traditional stories.
What else can I say except this is a classic - a treasure-trove of beliefs, rituals and traditions of "Magic" and "Religion" (and wherever the twain, and medicine, do meet). This is an all-encompassing reference book invaluable to those who were mesmerized by Greek mythology, entranced by the sylvan and nature beliefs and rituals of both ancient times and aboriginal practices. Certainly not written with any thought of "political correctness" (Frazer lumps most aboriginal humans - both past and Frazer's present day - as "barbarians" or "savages"), the reader must consider when this was written; yet, one will find terminology still used today (remember the movie "Practical Magic").
Product description is for the paperback Oxford University Press edition; this hardback is a 2013 version by Simon and Brown publishers. The binding is cheap plasticized cardboard (the image in the listing is not a dust cover, it is the book itself) and the paper is inferior and likely will turn brown in a few years. The printing covers most of the page from edge to edge with little of the white space that one is used to from quality publishers. As a lover of quality books with over 5000 hardback volumes in my library, I have never come across a piece of trash like this. It is an insult to Fraser and his work.
Although extremely lengthy and at times, dull, it is a must for students of religion, anthropology, and history. Clearly shows man's evolution through myth\magic, religion, and science. Fascinating!
James Frazer's, "The Golden Bough," is a must read for anyone interested in the comparative study of religion, folklore and magic. This abridged version of a multi-volumed master work will open your eyes to the commonality amongst traditional religious beliefs and practices around the world. One warning though: This book may cause an acute existential crisis for Bible heads. If you can't recognize pagan themes and rituals in the old and new testaments -blood sacrifice in particular- then you're better off sticking to bible tract comic books. I also love the cover art of Turner's "Aeneas and the Sibyl."
