The fact that the whole plan hinged on the ostensibly neutral Spanish makes it even more astonishing that the thing worked.A story about a different kind of warfare. Very entertaining and human. It's amazing that it's true.
Macintyre does a good job putting the reader right into the action. I was reminded while reading this book that non-fiction can differ from fiction in the number of characters the reader must keep straight. I commend Macintyre's efforts to help in that task by often using the real name alongside the alias. Nevertheless, it could still get a little confusing especially when double agents were involved.That said, I must add how much I enjoyed reading a bit of history that gets swept under the broad-brush treatment we normally get in viewing world events. It brings to mind the saying of the stage: there's no such thing as small parts, only small actors. Macintyre admits that the Sicily invasion could have been done without this one piece of deception and that no one can prove it had an impact. However, he makes a very strong case for the importance of it. I found how detailed they were in faking their ruse very fascinating. Watching how committed the Germans were to believing the ruse simply because they wanted to surpassed the work that went into creating the lie.Operation Mincemeat was like reading a mystery that let you know the who the perpetrator was at the beginning and let you accompany him as he developed the intrigue and misleading clues. It's entertaining, astounding, and enlightening. I am now wondering where to go to get to the truth of what is happening in world, national, and even local events.
An absolute page-turner that adds so much more newly-released/newly-declassified information to "The Man Who Never Was", which most people who would think about buying this book would have seen. Not that the movie or original book was inaccurate because it took "Hollywood liberties." When the movie and original book were made in the early 1950s, even the Ultra Secret was still classified and top secret, so that entire relationship is completely eliminated from those original stories, as are many things that, due to the Official Secrets Act (U.K.) could not be talked about! So, the book/movie had to work around those obstacles either with "deceptions" and "inventions" of it's own, or leaving things out. The original author Montagu, was the spy who developed and ran the operation, along with a partner, Charles Cholmondeley, who was also for security-related personal reasons, declined to be mentioned in the book or movie. You'll learn how they really got the body (hint: not exactly as in the movie/book) and how Ian Flemming (yes, THAT Ian Flemming!) was himself actively involved in "Operation Mincemeat" (a.k.a. "The Man Who Never Was") along with a host of other now-well known spies-turned-authors, such as Graham Greene, and other notables including the soon-to-be-notorious British traitor-spy, Kim Philby. Ben Macintyre is an established author and a fine writer, including "The Man Who Would Be King." This is a great book for everyone. The effects of "Operation Mincemeat" are still being felt today, and everyone should know about what has been called by historians the single, most important and successful wartime deception in history, rivaled only by the original itself, The Trojan Horse, more than 3,000 years earlier.
So I'm biased, or more properly hooked on Macintyre! His writing captures the essence of everything to come within the early paragraphs in almost every one of his books I have read. Mincemeat is no exception. You get the idea very soon which way this story is going to go but you cannot anticipate very far ahead because there is always a new character or some unexpected wrinkle proving " the best laid plans of mice and men..."Even with the twists and quirks, the scheme has a happy ending unless you were rooting for the Third Reich. It's a great story told by a great storyteller.

Stephen Witt was born in New Hampshire in 1979 and raised in the Midwest. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in mathematics in 2001. He spent the next six years playing the stock market, working for hedge funds in Chicago and New York. Following a two-year stint in East Africa working in economic development, he graduated from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2011. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

So, I picked up this book with great joy, and I am very glad I read it. As I read, I felt like I was sitting at a cafe with Stephen Witt - a man who is clearly deeply knowledgeable and full of incredibly interesting stories. As a narrative, the work is captivating. However, as a coherent, edited book, it falls short of perfection.As the other reviews mentioned, Witt carefully interweaves several stories within the book. I felt that the balance between the broader music industry and the individual stories of prolific pirates was a bit jarring sometimes. I greatly appreciated the introduction where the author discusses the academic research that led to the invention of the MP3, and even dives into some of the technical aspects of how music is compressed. As a layman, this was incredibly useful, and I learned lots. I was also emotionally captivated by Dell and Glover's story. The book fell a bit short, however, when it jumped to the broader dynamics within the music industry. Moreover, while Witt's conversational tone can be a page turner, oft-repeated sentence structures and convoluted phrasing would have surely benefitted from a better editor.All in all, I greatly enjoyed the book, but wish it was edited for clarity and slightly restructured for coherence. This shouldn't deter you from reading it, as the benefits still greatly outweigh the cons.
This was one of those books I purchased (for Kindle) as an impulse buy, but found to be a really good one. Stephen Witt does a great job telling the story of the mp3 and how it revolutionized (for better and worse, I suppose) the music industry. He does this through very well-informed alternating chapters told from the vantage point of different characters - one of the inventors of the mp3, a hacker from North Carolina, a music executive at Universal Music, and some bit players like Steve Jobs and a representative from the Recording Industry Association of America.In brief, the story is this: a fledgling technology, the mp3, is basically losing out to the industry's preferred mp2 and the Compact Disc... until music hackers discover the amazing potential for ripping music from CDs and keeping them on their computer. This, obviously, affects the music industry, who never anticipated (or didn't know how to think about) the mp3's rise to prominence. So, the music industry needed a way to stop this technology or incorporate it into their fold, which eventually they did with the rise of the mp3 player (which had questionable legality in its early years, as mp3s were primarily associated with hacking). Now, the music industry deals almost exclusively in selling digital media via the mp3, but even now, the music industry is a shell of its former self in terms of sales. The mp3 basically nudged them to monetize in less profitable ways; not only do they sell songs cheaper than via compact disc (and can't rely on selling whole albums), but venues like Spotify monetize music by selling advertising along with it.So, this is a story ab out how the mp3 had huge effects all over the music industry; not bad for a technology that was largely declared dead in the water during its development. One thing Witt does really well - besides pacing the story like an expert journalist - is that he doesn't moralize too much. Was the mp3's rise because it allowed easy theft so that people could enjoy the fruits of others' labor for free? Or was it a natural and understandable reaction to the cartelization of the music industry (which, during the mp3's rise, was found guilty of collusion to keep the price of CD's up)? Witt doesn't say. If I had to guess, he sympathizes more with the latter (and suggests in the intro that he was one of the kids who got all his music by file sharing services). But he seems to keep the story a bit neutral, allowing each to come to their own conclusions (or read their existing conclusions in).This was just a FUN book to read. It is about entrepreneurship, economics, hacking, and technology's capability to disrupt (not to mention... MUSIC) all in one. I found it gripping. Any music fan - and especially those who think the medium is the message - will too.

I suppose he's right; they didn't want to adapt themselves to the changes, technology-wise...How Music Got Free is a very entertaining read. The reader gets to know everything that has to do with the way music developed since the 1960's while feeling like Witt is right there in the living room with you, telling how it's all been, coffee mug in hand. Highly recommended to anyone who's a music nuts, also to rising musicians who nowadays see themselves having their music on iTunes, Spotify and other digital stores. It's important to know the story behind the ways of distributing music, past and present.
Gaming directly in the author's age group and recalling this transitory period well, this was a gripping look at some of what transpired behind the scenes to change music forever. While it focuses on just three different people (and a 4th in Oink that helped replace Fraunhofer's role), the breath and complexity of the story woven felt complete.I think one of the most fascinating elements of the book are the points where with 20-20 hindsight you see just how clueless folks can be about the opportunities in technology. Introducing the telephony jukebox, I immediately thought "Holy cramp, it's Spotify 30 years to early!" Or the hubris of the music industry.I found myself being shamefully impressed with a music executive, despite my low opinion of the industry. And that's okay. This is a compelling read, with many layers.

Well, maybe not. Unless there was cable TV, a DVD player, and a local video store. But still, this is the best reference on the market when it comes to cast/crew biography. The listing is exhaustive of directors, actors, writers, producers, and others who made important milestones when it comes to film. Included are film terms. It's true that this is not a film encyclopedia, actually, but there are those on the market already. So if the argument here is about the "title" of this guide, get a life already. Maybe you feel you got took...but, by far, you have not. This is the best desk reference of its kind. Believe me. I've studied film for over 20 years and, above all, I'm a critic and this book is the one guide I would NEVER do without. A good compliment would be, as one reviewer mentioned here, Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide. However, an updated copy of that is released every year late summer-early autumn. So, if it's spring or summer, wait for the next copy. You'll get all the recent films of the last year then. Maltin's guide has details about each film that will be found in no other film guides. Buy it-and buy the Katz guide for sure!Update as of April, 2014: truthfully, this IS more of a "desert isle text", as my title refers, for in the modern age, IMDB and, primarily, Wikipedia are really all you need. However, this may still come in handy, for both sites have their omissions. Outside of that, I truthfully haven't picked up this book for years and years. However, I still stand behind the Maltin guide completely.

I've had every edition of this book, from the 1970s to the present. There's a good reason that no film buff should go without it. That every major film critic and historian in America has a copy of this book on their shelves is good enough endorsement for me.If you're looking for profiles of "flash in the pan" trends and/or movie stars, forget it. But for everything else, this is as good as it gets.Best of all. This book has always been a GREAT VALUE. Always priced below what you'd expect. Buy it. I updated from an earlier edition on this book. I consider this to be an esssential for the movie lover. Not a book with movie reviews, but a (large) volumn of info of all types. Bio's of the stars & performers list all of their films. Many articles on techniques, etc make this a 1 volumn source of info on just about anything movie wise.
This 6th is much better edition than the original 3rd edition. Data updated to keep pace with DOB and ensuing Date of Death. Plus, new copy as opposed to 2nd hand copy that it replaced.I was mistakenly sent the 3rd Edition which I promptly returned after opening. Then I was sent an expedited 6th edition within 3 days. The original 3rd edition took 3 weeks on the cheapest slow boat from China. The second came by jet obvium to requite me for my expenditure which you duly noted. Thank you again Amazon.alba hall

This book goes into the weaving, dyeing, thread production, types and amounts of animals needed for cloth production in the Greenland colony in the 14th century. Highly recommend it especially when the author comes to something that she didn't know she says we have no idea.
This book is so well written that you can read it even if you aren't particularly interested in weaving, and enjoy it. It is a cultural connection between the craft of weaving and the culture of life. Highly recommended to weavers who are interested in the history of their craft.

Stephen Joseph Rossetti (born 1951) is a Catholic priest, author, educator, licensed psychologist, retreat master and expert on psychological and spiritual wellness issues for Catholic priests. He has written other books such as A Tragic Grace: The Catholic Church and Child Sexual Abuse (From the Interfaith Sexual Trauma Institute),Letters to My Brothers: Words of Hope and Challenge for Priests,The Joy of Priesthood,Born of the Eucharist: A Spirituality for Priests, etc.He wrote in the Introduction to this 1990 book, "The media have brought this illness into the open; our legal system has made the penalty for ignoring it too high; and the ensuing public outcry gives testimony to the urgency of this issue. There IS a problem of child sexual abuse in our church, and we cannot ignore it." (Pg. 1-2) He adds, "In this study, we have gathered professional people... a psychiatrist, several psychologists, a social worker, a bishop, a priest-civil lawyer, a member of the media, plus the personal witnesses of a priest-child molester and a victim of sexual abuse. Each professional is an expert in some aspect of child sexual abuse in the church." (Pg. 7) The book then includes twelve essays.One writer says, "many priest child molesters confess to growing up in a repressive environment which subtly, or not so subtly, told them to 'stay away from girls' or that 'sexual desires concerning women are evil.' ... he believes it is wrong even to feel his sexual attraction to women. He becomes extremely threatened by his own heterosexual feelings. Ironically, no one ever told them it was wrong to have a sexual encounter with boys. Many priest sex offenders report not hearing the same negative message about sex with boys. When they reached puberty... it seemed okay to have an encounter with their male friends. And no one put a stop to it. They grew up with a belief that sex with boys is okay... this rationalization... suggests a distortion that was fostered from an early age: sex with women is the ultimate sin; therefore, sex with boys is a lesser sin." (Pg. 12-13) Another writes, "For a pedophile, the emotional congruence factor is critical. The perpetrator is developmentally arrested and may be at the same psychosexual age as his victims. Thus, the pedophile emotionally and sexually identifies with the child who becomes his or her victim." (Pg. 32-33)Another essay suggests, "Generally speaking, the results of treatment of priests and religious who have sexually abused children are excellent. At one facility, The Saint Luke Institute... Of those in active follow-up (most of them), there were no reported instances of relapse and no new allegations of child molestation. Even allowing for the possibility of some improper behavior that was not brought to light and the small number of relapses in subsequent years... Pessimism about the effectiveness of treatment is simply not warranted. But these numbers should not be misinterpreted. Some of the individuals, though sexually abstinent, are quite impaired. Sometimes... those in recovery have little to offer others once their basic ongoing recovery needs have been met. For the majority, however, the admission and treatment of their illness has led to a new level of psychological and spiritual health." (Pg. 63)Still another essay observes, "Contrary to the myth of a man hiding in a dark alley or lurking behind the bushes in a trench coat, most children are sexually abused by someone they know and trust." (Pg. 69) Another suggests, "If a child learns that adults cannot be trusted, it is highly unlikely that he or she will learn to trust God." (Pg. 90)One of the abusers wrote, "I saw a television show called '20.20.' It featured a young kid who had been sexually abused by his foster father... Later on, we found out that his foster father had himself been sexually abused when he was a kid. The reporter turned and said, 'Victims become victimizers.' That was what broke my consciousness into reality. It just his me. Victims become victimizers... I knew I was a victim and now I was victimizing. I began to stop playing the victim and to accept the responsibility for my actions..." (Pg. 109)This is a very insightful collection, that will be of great interest to anyone studying this controversial issue.
I have read both this book and Rossetti's book Slayer of the Soul. Both books speak of the destructive impact of clergy abuse. As the Executive Vice-President and COO of St. Luke Institute, one of the main US Roman Catholic clergy psychiatric facilities, the author could have provided invaluable first-hand accounts of dealing with the church hierarchy's handling of clergy who abuse, including reassignment, failure to report the abuse to civil law enforcement authorities and failure to be forthright to parish communities who may have an abuser in their midst. Missing from the book is carefully developed insight concerning how organizations like St. Luke Institute treat clergy offenders and how impact of the abuse on victim(s) is incorporated in the treatment and how the victim/s and parish community is prepared for the clergy abuser's release from treatment. The author stands in a position of knowing directly how the archbishops and bishops respond to victims both in terms of compassion and justice and inclusion of information on those experiences would have been insightful. Also, introspection of the role of such treatment facilities on releasing clergy sexual offenders back into positions of trust in which they come into contact with the vulnerable should have been covered. Additional insight into how offending clergy are monitored upon release from institutions like St. Luke Institute would have been a relevant chapter in the book.
