This is a good starter book on what turtles and tortoises require. It outlines many of the types of turtles and tortoises, has tons of color pictures, and is chock full of info.It goes over habitats, feeding, breeding, hibernation, dangers (fire ants, spinach) etc. including practical tips from the authors.Unfortunately, this book convinced me that it is not very easy to keep turtles and tortoises and this would be a major investment and worry, so I decided not to.Oh well.
Great book to learn about turtles but not so much for Tortoises
When I got my turtle, Tim, I didn't know a thing about turtles - so I got this book as well as did a ton of research online. This book has TONS of good information (and pictures) about how to care for and house turtles. My turtle is several years old now, and is very happy and healthy. I recommend this to anyone who is looking to get a pet turtle. The reality of turtle-keeping is that it is a LOT of work. Turtles are dirty, and even with high powered filters their tanks need constant cleaning. I didn't know what I was getting in to, but it's worth the effort! Turtles are wonderful pets, and this book will give you all the basic information you need to know.
Awesome! Very detailed & informative.
I just wanted to learn more about turtles and it has lots of info about different types of turtles. It is in a pretty easy format and has lots of photos too.

Must have for any tattooer or apprentice. Tons of redraws of classic flash in tilt's style. This book has been a starting point for a lot of newer up and comers.
Bought this as a gift for my husband, who just really enjoys traditional tattoo work. It's become a coffee table book that he likes to flip through. The pages are thick and of good quality, well worth the price.
I Love this one better than the 2nd book! Personal favorite for good ol' Traditional flash. Great for tattoo enthusiast, experienced tattoo artist & new ones. Definitely has been a great help to me!
Love classic tattoos
Nice collection but honestly not much use. Can find most of the images online and there are plenty of other books out there with these images, plus substance and content.
This book is AWESOME!!! If you tattoo, this is a great book to take along and show off a multitude of solid designs.
Love the book. Nice guide to old flash art.

I picked up this book for a class that I was teaching at my office. The goal of the class was to train HTML/CSS/JavaScript and/or Java programmers to code in Perl since a large portion of our code base is written in Perl. Overall, I think that the book was a good choice for the class for a number of reasons.First of all, the book is already written with a classroom setting in mind. The authors have used previous versions of the book, titled "Learning Perl Objects, References and Modules", for their own courses. This updated version benefits from all of the hours of empirical testing that it has received in the classroom. There are many thoughtful additions like having all of the chapters close to the same size. This allowed for me to assign a single chapter per session and know that I could comfortably fit the lecture and discussion of the chapter into a two-hour session. There are also exercises at the end of each chapter and answers for those exercises (with discussion) in an appendix. This book is good for getting people just learning the language ready for the TMTOWTDI/TIMTOWTDI aspect of Perl. Take something simple like opening files... there are at least four 'standard' ways to do it. The book prepares you for all of the different versions of annoyances/features like this that show up in Perl code by walking through the evolution of the feature.Another reason that I like this selection of book is that data files and code examples are actually available for download. I've been shocked that some of the programming books that I've gotten lately actually don't have this addition. Finally, the course that I'm teaching is for people who probably already know how to program, at least a little, but they don't know Perl. I didn't want to drag them through all of the picky details of the language by starting with "Learning Perl" or something equivalent. This book has been a good choice for introducing programmers to Perl. I do have to stop occasionally and explain some fundamentals of the language, but not too often... maybe I just work with smart (or shy) people :)Of course, the book isn't perfect. As odd as it seems, one of the biggest complaints that I get is over the Gilligan references that are used in all of the examples in the book. There is also some coverage of packaging modules for CPAN. This is useful, just not for the particular class that I'm teaching, so we skipped that chapter. Of course, both of these complaints are pretty weak.In short, this is a good book, especially if you are doing a training session about Perl.
I own a ton of technical books on various computer subjects. If they were all as well written as this, life would be so much easier. It is clear and concise. Easily re-readable for more difficult concepts. Every chapter has self exercises, and the answers are in the back. I honestly wish other books were written in this detailed, easy to follow style. The code examples actually demonstrate the concepts and do not introduce distractions from what you are trying to learn. This book is very gratifying to work through because you actually learn at a good pace. The chapters serve as a great desk side reference. My only complaint is that "Intermediate" is in the title, which looks like of noobish on my desk. On the other hand, you know exactly where you are in the series hierarchy..
This book is a must for anyone who has mastered the first several chapters of "Learning Perl" and wants to extend this perl skills. It covers an excelent choice of topics. With one exception, the coverage is well written and supported by amusing examples and appropriate exercises (with informative answers). Only that exception and a strong bias toward the UNIX user keep it from earning my highest rating. The section on the use of the module Data::Dumper for marshalling data fails to meet the standard set by the remainder of the book. Frankly, it leaves me confused. Fortunately, the advice is to use other modules which are covered with the expected clarity.Topics are all of general interest. Do not expect to find detailed advice relevant only to a single disipline such as network, data base, or biology programming.
The authors continue to explain well, add puns, and bring your Perl to new heights. Definitely one of my better purchases.
This one hit me hard in the head -- but very detailed and the first book to open up my eyes to what's going on in Perl code... Of course, not as detailed as the Camel, but very good indeed and very funny as other Perl books...
Great book was delivered on time and was intact.
This book has advanced my knowledge of perl better than any other! The delivery is spot-on and I understood everything very quickly based on Randal's presentation. Obviously very well refined given how many revisions have past.
A well-written book (in the authors' traditional 'style') coveringmost of the essential ways to use Perl beyond the simplecode that makes your Perl look like Basic.

Review
“Smith’s brilliant, breathtakingly immediate sequence . . . crackles with energy, curiosity, and mischief. . . .Even in the darkest periods, tendrils of life still strive toward the light. . . . Its creator wants to remind us that the pendulum can swing back and that one day the sun will return.”—Laura Miller, Slate “[A] moving mixture of the fantastical and the allegorical . . . Topical, sweet-natured, something fun to be inside.”—James Wood, The New Yorker “Extremely funny and seriously angry and experimental and heartbreaking, but never sentimental . . . In Winter, the light inside this great novelist’s gorgeous snow globe is utterly original, and it definitely illuminates.”—Meg Wolitzer, The New York Times Book Review “It is not necessary to read Smith’s Autumn before her Winter; while the two books share a philosophical style and a playfulness with words, they don’t concern the same cast. . . . Winter pays frequent homage to A Christmas Carol. . . . [Smith] spins a fine story. . . . Winter is a stunning meditation on a complex, emotional moment in history.—Sarah Begley, TIME “Ali Smith is flat-out brilliant, and she's on fire these days. . . . [Winter] demonstrates yet again Smith's skill at revealing surprising relationships between seemingly disparate narrative threads. . . . You can trust Smith to snow us once again with her uncanny ability to combine brainy playfulness with depth, topicality with timelessness, and complexity with accessibility while delivering an impassioned defense of human decency and art. . . . Once again Smith has balanced darkness with light, bleakness with hope. —Heller McAlpin, NPR“Smith has conjured a kind of dream England in Winter an insubordinate folk tale . . . [and Smith] succeeds, jubilantly. . . . There are few writers on the world stage who are producing fiction this offbeat and alluring.” —Dwight Garner, The New York Times “Ali Smith’s virtuosic Winter is to pay attention to the world we’ve recently been living in. . . . Smith gives us a potent, necessary source of sustenance that speaks directly to our age. . . . The profound pleasure of these books is their near miracle. . . . [I]n the midst of Winter, each page touched with human grace, you might just begin to believe.”—Laura Collins-Hughes, The Boston Globe “[Smith is] a really fearless novelist. . . . Her work is as alive as a fish on the end of a line. . . consistently breathtaking.″—Charles Finch, Chicago Tribune “Stunning prose. . . . often funny, sometimes wistful. . . . A sprightly, digressive, intriguing fandango on life and time.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“This second installment in Smith’s seasonal quartet combines captivating storytelling with a timely focus on social issues. Enthusiastically recommended; we’re now eagerly awaiting Spring.”—Library Journal (starred review) “[A] seasonal quartet through which British novelist Ali Smith is writing a classic, one mind-blowing installment at a time. . . . The stunningly original Smith again breaks every conceivable narrative rule. . . .It demands and richly rewards close attention. . . .—Mike Fischer, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “The second in Smith’s quartet of seasonal novels displays her mastery at weaving allusive magic into the tragicomedies of British people and politics. . . . A bleak, beautiful tale greater than the sum of its references.”—Boris Kachka, VultureINTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM:“A capacious, generous shapeshifter of a novel . . . [A] book with Christmas at its heart, in all its familiarity and estrangement: about time, and out of time, like the festival itself.” —The Guardian (The Best Fiction of 2017) “[There are] glimmers of life, laughter and love. . . . Smith threads passages of delicately observed natural beauty throughout the ephemera. She often lets the language itself lead her (hence her love of puns), and the intricate narrative rolls back and forth smoothly in time.”—The Times Literary Supplement (London)“Winter is typical of the Scottish writer’s heart-starting (and often heart-stopping) fiction: all spark, lark and jumper-lead, playful, witty and gloriously challenging. . . . Balancing delicious and irreverent playfulness with deep seriousness, Smith’s engineering of tone and mode is one of many facets of the novel’s appeal. —The Australian “Smith's deceptively unshowy writing evokes every shade of emotion. . . . Themes and experiences entangle, making Winter a dense, satisfying read. . . . It's to Smith's credit that Winter works on a number of levels, from a straightforward, quotidian tale about a fractured family to a deeper story packed with symbolism and highbrow literary references: a subtle meditation on loneliness, loss and aging in uncertain times.”—The Irish Independent“The novel is lucid and tightly constructed. . . . [I]ts disparate strands converge tautly to convey and deepen Smith’s powerful political message. . . . This wintry spirit of benevolence animates Smith’s vision of a world where empathy overrides divisions and where animosity can melt like snow. . . . Smith’s voice, so wise and joyful, is the perfect antidote to troubled times: raw and bitter in the face of injustice, yet always alive to hope.”—New Statesman “Smith combines her state-of-the-moment themes with a preoccupation for how to behave in a meaningful way in an increasingly technocratic world—and she does so with an effervescent seriousness none of her peers can match.”—Daily Mail “A novel of great ferocity, tenderness, righteous anger and generosity of spirit that you feel Dickens would have recognised . . . Winter is at its most luminously beautiful when the news fades and merges with recent and ancient history, a reminder that everything is cyclical. There is forgiveness here, and song, and comic resolution of sorts, but the abiding image is of the tenacity of nature and light.”—The Observer (London) “Smith has both a telescopic and a microscopic eye. . . . Her many-layered artistry softens rage or sorrow. . . If Ali Smith’s four quartets in, and about, time do not endure to rank among the most original, consoling and inspiring of artistic responses to ‘this mad and bitter mess’ of the present, then we will have plunged into an even bleaker midwinter than people often fear.”—Financial Times “One of Britain’s most important novelists . . . Winter is narrated with Smith’s customary stylistic brio . . . punctuated with clever word play . . . Heartwarming.”—The Irish Times “Smith’s prose—that trademark mischievous wit and wordplay, a joyful reminder of the most basic, elemental delights of reading—makes us see things differently . . . The entire book is testament to the miraculous powers of the creative arts . . . Winter firmly acknowledges the power of stories. Infused with some much needed humour, happiness and hope.”—The Independent (London) “Calm, cool and consoling. . . . But still a sparkler. . . . [A] novel of visions, memories and family relationships.”—The Spectator “A novel which, in its very inclusiveness, associative joy, and unrestricted movement, proposes other kinds of vision . . . [A]stonishingly fertile and free . . . [Smith] finds life stubbornly shining in the evergreens . . . told in a voice that is Dickensian in its fluency and mobile empathy . . . Leaping, laughing, sad, generous and winter-wise, this is a thing of grace.” —The Guardian “Combines comedy with social criticism, playfulness with political indictment . . . Structurally, the book is intricate: a collage of flashbacks, flash-forwards and interior monologues . . . Smith is a self-consciously aesthetic writer who also has strong political convictions.” —The Sunday Times (London)“If Ali Smith’s four quartets in, and about, time do not endure to rank among the most original, consoling and inspiring of artistic responses to 'this mad and bitter mess' of the present, then we will have plunged into an even bleaker midwinter than people often fear.” —Financial Times “Refracted through the lens of a broken family in a broken home, Smith’s vision is almost without redemption, but not quite; beneath the frozen ground, some hope exists.”—The Times (London) “a novel of great ferocity, tenderness, righteous anger and generosity of spirit . . . Winter is at its most luminously beautiful when the news fades and merges with recent and ancient history, a reminder that everything is cyclical. There is forgiveness here, and song, and comic resolution of sorts, but the abiding image is of the tenacity of nature and light.”—The Observer “(Smith) is cresting across the contemporary in a manner few novelists can manage. . . . Winter is a novel in which the cold also reveals clarity. Things crystallize. They become piercing and numbing at the same time. It is a book about being wintry in the sense of supercilious and hibernal, in its sense of wanting to shut the world out. The characters have to deal with both impulses, and deal with them in different ways. But the end result is a book that makes one think, and thinky books are rare as hen’s teeth these days.”—The Scotsman

Ali Smith has a way of drawing you into her world. I always find myself lost in her novels and, when I've finished them, at a loss as to how to summarize them. This review was stretching out way too long, so I'm starting again, paring away the details that you need to discover for yourself.'Winter' is both a family drama and a commentary on the changing climate--both the physical climate and the sociopolitical one. The family: three estranged people and a lovable impostor. The commentary: our world and what it is doing to humanity. One of Smith's targets is technology and the way it removes us from real relationships, responsibility, and personal authenticity. The egotism and isolation it creates feeds into the populist movements that brought us Brexit and Donald Trump, both of which come under Smith's verbal attack. There's a moment when Art, one of the main characters, reads about a crowdfunding effort to raise money to buy a boat that will repel Italian boats trying to rescue refugees. It's hard not to see in that the support in some American quarters for building a wall on the Mexican border and deporting Dreamers to "home countries" that have never in memory been their homes. And it's no surprise that one main character, Arthur, writes a successful blog, Art in Nature--even though he is never out in nature and is rarely artful; it's all just BS for attention and self-gratification.The family story: It's almost Christmas, and Art and his fiancée Charlotte committed to spend the holiday with his mother, Sophie, in Cornwall. But there's a problem: Charlotte, an environmental activist, has called out Art for his lack of any real commitment to pro-nature causes. (There's symbolism in the fact that she destroys his laptop on her way out.) But does Art call Sophie and explain the breakup? Of course not. Instead, he hires a young Croatian girl who looks like she could use some cash to pretend to be Charlotte. Lux turns out to be the quiet hero of the novel.Sophie and Art don't get along. Sophie, a once-successful businesswoman, doesn't get along with her aging hippie sister, Iris, who is always off somewhere saving the world. And lately, Sophie has been seeing things . . . namely, the floating head of a young child. It's Lux who tells Art that he must call Iris and tell her to come at once, despite the sisters' animosity.Enough said about the plot. The novel moves back and forth among the family members and back and forth in time through their memories, yet it always comes back to the present day, asking, How did we get to this place? Full of Smith's usual wordplay, 'Winter' gives us bittersweet of the art that once was and the nature that we're losing, yet somehow we're left not so much with a sense of doom as a ray of hope. I can't describe it any better than that without giving away far too much and making it sound like something it isn't. Read it. Find out for yourself. When you're done, you'll want to read it again.
Such beautiful writing that enfolds the depth, breadth and heft of experience. It's hard to write about this stunning book because my words feel impoverished in comparison to the writing of Ali Smith. So much to love - deep and insightful charaterisations, effortless bridging of different times in a flow and sweep of prose, important questions, perspicacious observations, sympathy for flawed and difficult individuals. There's a gentle and tender view underlying it all that is nonetheless fierce and compelling. I felt completely drawn into this universe and am sad that the book is finished. Looking forward to the next season in the set.
I'm becoming so enamoured with Ali Smith's style. This book is so cleverly witty, steeped in UK and global context, and depicts the roles and trends of modern communication technology. All done in a thought provoking way. The characters are vivid and enthralling. Now the long wait for Spring.
Pick up this book. Note how, in the hands of a literary master, no tricks are required. The counterpoint between characters falls exactly when, and as, needed to move the plot. Time moves forward. Time moves backward. I think of Lessing and Drabble.
This book could have had more life in it; more emotionality would have brought these characters to life. Instead I found I could barely distinguish between Charlotte, Sophie or Lux. They were all flat and their laconic speech was unengaging and seemed to me to be inconsequential. The male character, Art, who is related to two of them, appeared to be as ground down as the three women.I was very disappointed. The book received high praise from literary reviewers but not from me.
I like the prose, but with the reservation that it can be elliptical, and illusive. While "Autumn" was pretty clearly about mother/daughter in relationship to the daughter's friend and mentor, "Winter" seems to start with a surreal (or metaphorical) use of the "head" which follows her around, and a pretty straight-forward realistic novel. I found this mixture disconcerting, in that it divides the book into two halves.
A timely post-modern piece, with political undercurrents in Britain and even the US. But too fragmented. Good characters, good scenes, but lacking in momentum. This author's "Autumn" was much better, in the same mode.
Smith is doing a tetraology and Fall was one of my favorites of last fall and I thought this is going to be hard to equal. But Winter I reread as soon as I finished. Among many other delights, this is the best dysfunctional family Christmas novel ever

`It is ... a privilege to be offered this sparkling new translation of nine of his Greek Lives by Robin Waterfield. ... It is ... a distinguishing trait of Waterfield's that in the interests of scholarship he will go to endless lengths to find the mot juste; ... the book entirely fulfils thepublisher's own criteria for inclusion in the new Oxford World's Classics list, namely to make available 'celebrated writing' in editions equipped with'perceptive commentary and essential back-ground information to meet the changing needs of readers'. Just as described. Thank you!
Excellently translated and easy to read and understand the lives of ancient Greeks. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to study antiquity
I needed this book for a summer class and it was a pretty good read. Chapters are your average text book chapters, maybe a little shorter but not by much. Informative and I learned some new things.
Interesting bios of Greek historical figures. Enjoyed learning more about Alexander, Lycurgus and Alcibiates. Others were not as exciting. Would have helped to have a bit more background on Greek history before listening to this book.
Clean book
Was in great condition for class.
Some of these bios are simply fascinating, especially the ones of Lycurgus, Alexander the Great and Themistocles. Plutarch tends to do character sketches, as opposed to lenghty reports of battles. For example, most of the military campaigns of Alexander the Great are simply glossed over. However, he does show the moral actions and personalities of his characters. He is also a very good writer and fun to read; not too dry at all. I would suggest this book for several reasons:1) To decide if you would like to read more Plutarch. 2) You have mastered ancient history and are looking for character portrayals of these people. 3) You are looking for in introduction for study of the ancients.
Without a doubt, it is fascinating to read biographies based on ancient sources that no longer exist. Plutarch's Lives draws from multiple such primary sources as well as scholarly works from ancient Greece. There's no denying this. Further, much of the information on the ancient Greeks Plutarch writes about is not today available from other sources. The biographies themselves were very popular when they were written, which explains why they were preserved and we can read them today. Reading only the Greek bios without the Roman ones against which almost all of them were paired up with has shortcomings, but it depends what you want to get out of the collection, though the introductions do a nice job of filling this information in.This edition itself has very nice 4-page introductions to each biography as well as a very nice, longer introduction to the biographies as an entirety. The footnotes are very helpful. I wanted to read all of them, but because they were listed separately in the back of the volume, it was extremely disruptive constantly flipping back and forth. I'd gladly pay double for an edition with footnotes included in the text, or at least at the bottom of each page. The translation was fine, no complaints here.On the down side, the biographies themselves tend to be more about the persons themselves than about factual/solid historical information. It's like reading about how George Washington never told a lie, threw a silver dollar across the Potomac, and had ill-fitting dentures, as opposed to how Washington helped create a new nation. Frequently, the footnotes point out that other sources portray the subject differently. I was never sure when Plutarch was bending the facts to fit the theme he was trying to get across.I, personally, was most interested in the Alexander bio, but was somewhat let down because of the above reason. The Themistocles and Pericles bios had some interesting information and the Lycurgus bio provided many insights into Sparta.

Review
"It's appropriate that [Shop Class as Soulcraft] arrives in May, the month when college seniors commence real life. Skip Dr. Seuss, or a tie from Vineyard Vines, and give them a copy for graduation.... It's not an insult to say that Shop Class is the best self-help book that I've ever read. Almost all works in the genre skip the "self" part and jump straight to the "help." Crawford rightly asks whether today's cubicle dweller even has a respectable self....It's kind of like Heidegger and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance."-Slate "Matt Crawford's remarkable book on the morality and metaphysics of the repairman looks into the reality of practical activity. It is a superb combination of testimony and reflection, and you can't put it down."-Harvey Mansfield, Professor of Government, Harvard University "Every once in a great while, a book will come along that's brilliant and true and perfect for its time. Matthew B. Crawford's Shop Class as Soulcraft is that kind of book, a prophetic and searching examination of what we've lost by ceasing to work with our hands-and how we can get it back. During this time of cultural anxiety and reckoning, when the conventional wisdom that has long driven our wealthy, sophisticated culture is foundering amid an economic and spiritual tempest, Crawford's liberating volume appears like a lifeboat on the horizon."-Rod Dreher, author of Crunchy Cons: The New Conservative Counterculture and Its Return to Roots "This is a deep exploration of craftsmanship by someone with real, hands-on knowledge. The book is also quirky, surprising, and sometimes quite moving."-Richard Sennett, author of The Craftsman "Matt Crawford has written a brave and indispensable book. By making a powerful case for the enduring value of the manual trades, Shop Class as Soulcraft offers a bracing alternative to the techno-babble that passes for conventional wisdom, and points the way to a profoundly necessary reconnection with the material world. No one who cares about the future of human work can afford to ignore this book."-Jackson Lears, Editor in Chief, Raritan "We are on the verge of a national renewal. It will have more depth and grace if we read Crawford's book carefully and take it to heart. He is a sharp theorist, a practicing mechanic, and a captivating writer."-Albert Borgmann, author of Real American Ethics "Shop Class as Soulcraft is easily the most compelling polemic since The Closing of the American Mind. Crawford offers a stunning indictment of the modern workplace, detailing the many ways it deadens our senses and saps our vitality. And he describes how our educational system has done violence to our true nature as 'homo faber'. Better still, Crawford points in the direction of a richer, more fulfilling way of life. This is a book that will endure."-Reihan Salam, associate editor at The Atlantic, co-author of Grand New Party "Crawford reveals the satisfactions of the active craftsman who cultivates his own judgment, rather than being a passive consumer subject to manipulated fantasies of individuality and creativity."-Nathan Tarcov, Committee on Social Thought, University of Chicago"Philosopher and motorcycle repair-shop owner Crawford extols the value of making and fixing things in this masterful paean to what he calls "manual competence," the ability to work with one's hands. According to the author, our alienation from how our possessions are made and how they work takes many forms: the decline of shop class, the design of goods whose workings cannot be accessed by users (such as recent Mercedes models built without oil dipsticks) and the general disdain with which we regard the trades in our emerging "information economy." Unlike today's "knowledge worker," whose work is often so abstract that standards of excellence cannot exist in many fields (consider corporate executives awarded bonuses as their companies sink into bankruptcy), the person who works with his or her hands submits to standards inherent in the work itself: the lights either turn on or they don't, the toilet flushes or it doesn't, the motorcycle roars or sputters. With wit and humor, the author deftly mixes the details of his own experience as a tradesman and then proprietor of a motorcycle repair shop with more philosophical considerations." -Publishers Weekly, Starred review "Philosopher and motorcycle mechanic Crawford presents a fascinating, important analysis of the value of hard work and manufacturing. He reminds readers that in the 1990s vocational education (shop class) started to become a thing of the past as U.S. educators prepared students for the "knowledge revolution." Thus, an entire generation of American "thinkers" cannot, he says, do anything, and this is a threat to manufacturing, the fundamental backbone of economic development. Crawford makes real the experience of working with one's hands to make and fix things and the importance of skilled labor. His philosophical background is evident as he muses on how to live a pragmatic, concrete life in today's ever more abstract world and issues a clarion call for reviving trade and skill development classes in American preparatory schools. The result is inspired social criticism and deep personal exploration. Crawford's work will appeal to fans of Robert Pirsig's classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and should be required reading for all educational leaders. Highly recommended; Crawford's appreciation for various trades may intrigue readers with white collar jobs who wonder at the end of each day what they really accomplished." -Library Journal

I really wanted to like this book - all the way through the very last page as I forced myself to struggle to the end through the ramblings of the, "I believe in progressive republicanism." declaration. I even agree with much of what he has to say but...So much of the book is lost in the meandering of poor research, academics, wistful nostalgia for a past he never experienced and poorly formed arguments that it was hard to buy what he's selling, even though I'm a returning customer. I found very little substance related to "soulcraft" throughout the text and frankly wished he'd spent more time sharing what he learned from the shop teachers and mentors he mentions but never fully explores. The constant switch from the dedication to craft and work in the trades as sometimes related but separate and at others equal in all ways is simply wrong and confusing. I hate to be the one to break the news but not everyone in the trades has any interest in mastery of craft or is a richer or more enlightened human from their work. The author posits that white collar work is devoid of all meaning and lacks the ability to measure self against product - which in itself is worth a whole discussion - but there many in the fields of labor that rise to excellence and personal mastery in the white collar ranks as well.In the end, craftsmanship reflects the individual commitment to mastery and excellence and that isn't recognized in this volume. Soul enriching craftsmanship isn't found in the majority of workers regardless of profession and I was disappointed to find so little in this book that resonated with me - an already convinced believer that time in my shop is healing for my soul.
I've read "Shop Class as Soulcraft" twice and have urged friends to read it, too. It's a super-interesting book, which draws on autobiography, phenomenology, and labor studies to make the argument that the manual trades are cognitively and morally superior to most white-collar "knowledge" work. Ironically, the argument is rather cerebral: the basic idea (or one of them anyway) is that manual workers are in touch with objective reality and must satisfy objective standards of excellence, whereas office workers spend much of their professional time managing perceptions of themselves. As someone who hated every hour I spent in an office drafting strategies, "talking points," and press guidance -- ephemeral performance art, at best -- the book spoke to me. (It also helped that I grew up in the SF Bay Area, like the author.)Admittedly, the book has a few problems. As other Amazon reviewers have noted, the author makes sweeping generalizations on the basis of his two brief jobs in the "knowledge" sector and his readings of Jackall and Braverman. The book also has an underbaked, incomplete feel to it, as if the author had trouble working his ideas into a full-blown argument. And here and there there's a hint of reverse snobbery, as when the author writes knowingly of race tracks and grimy machinery while never letting his audience (made up overwhelmingly of white-collar book readers) forget that he has a PhD from the University of Chicago. Perhaps this makes him the last Renaissance Man. (Perhaps he drinks Dos Equis, too.)However, the book is definitely on to something. It will stir up reflection and self-recognition in anyone who reads it seriously. I'm looking forward to the author's next work.
An ironic 2-star that could have been 5-stars. Crawford desperately needs a better editor and someone to buy him a beer and share the hard fact that his book is just more of what he spends 200 pages bitching about. Sad part, he can write. The tiny minority of those 200 pages is insightful, compelling and memorable. The rest is precisely what he did, and accurately derides, as an abstractor at Information Access Company - poorly summarize others’ work without adding value. I doubt those who gave awards or glowing reviews (New York Mag, “spine-tingling’) did more than skim and assume the mix of academic end notes and first person grease monkey narrative meant this was fresh and insightful. I hope Crawford goes back and finds the 26 good pages and takes another shot. He has something to say and the skill to say it.
I bought several of these. After reading it myself I've purchased a few copies for folks wrestling to understand why they feel a connection to performing manual labor while intellectual work sometimes leaves them feeling unfulfilled. We tend to like ourselves more when see that our work is tangible and meaningful, and we like ourselves less when the value of our work is ambiguous. Hopefully the book encourages readers to develop their own trade skills, value those skills in others and teach younger generations to do the same. This book deepened my appreciation for my dads decision to support my engineering education on the condition that I also develop myself as a tradesman.
So this book is exactly what it says it is. A book over how America has bashed and degraded the blue collar workmen. If you think hey this would be a great book for my father because he likes to work on cars or in the woodshed, then don't get this book. This is more of a philosophical take on the american work force. Now does it have humor and stories that make you laugh and relate, yes. But about halfway through the book I felt as if he was just repeating he point he made in the first 5 chapters.I'd buy it again and I know I'll read it again.
