About the Author

Donald Judd was born in 1928. Convinced that Abstract Expressionism had deteriorated into fakery, Judd began around 1960 to search for an art free of falsehood. These stories are interconnected by a core set of characters who don't get anywhere by mainstream standards, but don't get overwhelmed by their lack of success because they didn't expect much to begin with. This leaves the reader with an uneasy sense of optimism that arises from the narrative's suspension of conventional norms about how to communicate or interact with others. Couldn't anything be possible when there are no apparent guidelines about how to live a life? Even some of the supernatural happenings described begin to seem plausible, given the author's gift of seamlessly blending tangible and spiritual elements into his storytelling. The always dysfunctional, often disturbing and sometimes hilariously funny behavior described drives home what growing up Indian in contemporary American society might feel like. At the same time, I can't help drawing a few parallels between growing up half a century ago in a frequently inebriated Irish family. Great storytelling would seem to be a universal refuge from chaos on the home front no matter what cultural crucible defines you.

Alexie is a wonderful writer - at once provocative and hilarious. I read this book several times when I first got my hands on it (it was one of a dozen or so books in English at the local library when I was living abroad) and have since shared it with many friends.I even bought a copy for my somewhat racist and homophobic father, hoping to expose him to a culture of which he knows little, and he too fell in love with the characters and their stories.

Alexie is the writer we all wish we could be. Once you put this book down you'll feel lonely, wistful, wrenched apart, and healed. The only answer will be to check out "Smoke Signals," the movie based on this beautiful horror, and Love Medicine, a slightly older work similar in its frenetic, harmonious yoga pretzels that leave you feeling tranquil. Then you might want to check out Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony.If you want to feel spiritual, this is how.

In this 20th anniversary edition the stories of Sherman Alexie ring ever as personal, lyrical and insightful as they did two decades ago. Having grown up just next door to the setting of these tales in Pend Oreille County, the scenes and city were as clear in my mind as ever. What was new when I first read it and again in reading this edition, was the peak into a very real and enduringly dynamic Native American culture. What Alexie is able to do in these context of these stories is open the reader up to the complex personhood behind the stereotypes; behind the rhetoric. I remember reading this as a young man in High School and how, even then, Thomas Builds-the-Fire spoke to me. Alexie acknowledges more readily now the autobiographical nature of these stories in many ways and it is in him we see not just Vincent but Thomas. Thomas was the modern day historian and wise man of the tribe though no one was willing to see it. He spoke the stories and words that needed to be spoken and needed to be heard both inside and outside of the reservation. Alexie does that as well, in this and in other books, capturing snapshots that speak to the humanity of history and its inherent subjectivity. This is what storytelling should be, telling us what we need to know that we had not realized and were even perhaps intent on avoiding. Things will never be what they were for any culture prior to expansionism, but hey, there is always a rising basketball star to put our hopes in. Worth getting the Anniversary Edition just for the final two additional stories.

This is an early collection of related stories from the author of "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian." The stories interconnect, and together paint a picture of growing up on the reservation is Eastern Washington State. Unlike in his novels, there isn't any clean conclusion to this collection, but rather a portrait of how life is, and I think maybe how life is for a lot of people, some of whom aren't Indians at all. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes ugly; good vs bad. The road to destruction and yet a life of dreams where "imagination" takes you to places unknown. I feel that the author does not expect everyone to react well to this book as it is very vivid ! As he says "the pressure of straddling two worlds.

I was inspired to read this after seeing the film "Smoke Signals." I found the collection of short stories enjoyable and accessible. In an age when many people substitute politics as a pseudo religion, using stories as a form of veiled ideological evangelism, Alexie sticks to telling us stories of those he's known and grown up with. No "Indian spiritual and good/white man money-lover and bad" stereotypical dynamic here; just interesting stories of people in a different and complex American culture. On a personal note, when the stories were somewhat 'trip' and surrealistic, I didn't enjoy them as much. But that's just a matter of taste. The majority of these were right up my alley, and a good, solid bout of my kind of storytelling.

We see her grow from a young girl who spends her happiest days playing and exploring the world around her with her friends and helping her mother with her younger sister. Her closest friends "jumping Fish" (her brother) and "Falcon" are her constant companions as they grow up day by day from children with not a care in the world, to young adults facing the world around them. Her relationship with Falcon changes as they grow older as well.From friendship grows love and they vow to be married one day when the time is right and Falcon has proven himself to be a man and worthy of marriage. To the three of them, life cannot be better, their threesome will stay close with the marriage and they will not have to part. Falcon prepares for his first hunt and with his return, plans to ask for Echo in marriage, a plan that seems perfect to all three of them.All seems happy and carefree for Echo until the day she happens to be in a place where a child falls from a high mesa and she catches it nimbly in her outstretched arms. From that day forward, her life changes in ways that she never dreamed possible....and all because she saved the life of this one child. For the child she saved is a child who belongs to the priest's and their group who live high on the mesa. And with the news of her heroic action a priest asks for her hand in marriage.Echo is crushed but knows that to ask for her hand is a compliment to her family and she cannot even think of refusing. So she is swept up into a marriage to a man she has no love for and who is not interested in her for a typical wife, but for someone who will be kind to him and help him as he grows older. She agrees to the marriage with the stipulation that he will teach her all his secrets of the priesthood and train her as he would a man. Her husband sees the wisdom in such a request and grants it thus beginning her studies as a student of the mysterious ways of their people.As the book continues, we see the tribe growing more and more aware that in order to survive, they must move on. For they have used up most of the natural resources of the area and as they years go by, it is harder and harder for them to prepare for the winters that lie ahead. Sadly they realize the futility of staying and one by one they move on leaving those who are too sick or old to stay and die where they lived. Echo stays behind caring for and burying those who die, as she feels she must do for her tribe. Her husband grows more ill as the days go by until he too passes on and Echo is left to bury her husband by herself. It is Echo's footsteps that are then the last to leave the mesa and all the memories it held for her people.After reading this, I found myself thoughtful, wondering if in fact this could have happened to the people of Chimney rock. I wondered if perhaps they, like the people in this book, slowly realized that though they had a wonderful city built on the mesa, that it no longer met their needs, and beautiful or not, they must move on to survive. I would highly recommend this book for young readers of all ages. It is filled with thoughtful moments, historical references to the lifestyle of Echo and her people and realistic characters as well. It is a book rich with meaning and thought provoking situations. This book is one that would make an excellent addition to any home or classroom library and one that is well worth the price. It is a wonderful way to look at the life of Native Americans and to see all aspects of their life in an easy to read and understandable manner. I bought this book as a supplemental/optional text book for a CBT course. It turned out to be the best of the three books assigned - more useful and practical than the other two required texts. It is well-laid out, with chapters organized by disorder, very easy to read, and full of practical examples.

This book is hard reading in the way all the headings continue throughout the text. But, If you persist, there are real nuggets for those of us who are experienced therapists. I don't know how helpful it would be for novices, who may need some further explanations.

I am about to start a CBT training course and the book was recommended by a friend who has previously completed the course. Inital reading has been informative and I hope it will become a working handtool in my practice

The book does not explain it's answers and it is not as user friendly as it could be. The Author uses text books as a reference and hence , this isn't a book written for top notch Toxicologists as it does not use peer reviewed sources.

Last year I was fortunate enough to read ‘Some Girls Are’ (all the stars from me), so I was already a fan of Courtney Summers, and her ability to tackle timely, tough, real world teenage issues, in a realistic, emotional, thought-provoking manner. The former was dark in places, but ‘Sadie’ is even bleaker, so if you’re expecting a happy book then this is not the read for you. Warning for sensitive and disturbing content. References are used sparingly, and avoid great detail, but are still horrible to read. Also if you are feeling low, or dealing with a stressful situation in your own life, this may not be the right time to pick up ‘Sadie’, as it won’t cheer you up. Although it may put your own problems into perspective!I was immediately drawn to Sadie as a character, even before I got to her POV. It’s impossible not to warm to someone who has so much love for another human being, who is selfless to such an extreme that she fails to care about her own well-being and future. Reading her POV only further cemented my love for Sadie, and I feared for her safety, prayed she wouldn’t sacrifice herself in her search for answers, and quest for revenge. All I wanted for Sadie’s future was the kindness, love, and happiness she so richly deserved.There were so many emotional moments, but one part that really got to me was the reveal of who came up with the title for the podcast, and the reason it was called ‘The Girls’ (which went beyond the obvious just so you know).I thought it was realistic, yet shocking, the amount of people who encountered Sadie on her journey, saw she was in distress, yet did nothing. This is a real, current issue of people not wanting to get involved for a variety of reasons – the topmost being that we all have so much going on in this fast-paced world, and we just don’t have the time or the energy to help out.‘Sadie’ is an ambitious book (especially for the YA genre), that is completely different from anything I have ever read, and I applaud Courtney Summers for writing it. Chapters alternating between the podcast and Sadie’s POV were a unique way to structure a novel, and really upped the originality. Also cute how Macmillan Publishing has released an actual podcast, available on iTunes (which I have yet to listen to, but plan to). Very cool accompaniment!My current top YA read for 2018! This one’s going to be hard to beat. Courtney Summers, whatever you plan on writing next, I will be there hitting the ‘pre-order’ button. Recommend to all the adults and teens in my life.

At the time I’m writing this review, it’s been a couple of days since I finished Sadie, and I still haven’t fully processed it. This is one of those stories that seeps into your bones somewhere along the way, and it changes the way you look at the world a little. It is the best mystery—and one of the best books, period—that I have ever read, and it is also one of the bleakest, most devastating reading experiences of my life.You know, going into this story, that Sadie’s little sister’s body has just been found, and Sadie is on a mission to track down the man she believes is responsible. Besides the fact that it’s a story partially told through podcast episodes (which is such an incredible touch), that’s all you really need to know. This isn’t about what happens so much as it is about coming to know and love Sadie—and to know and love Mattie, too, through her memories. It’s about recognizing that the society we live in has this terrifying, grimy layer that nobody wants to talk about, where little girls are never really safe, and children are forced to grow up way too fast, to become adults in replacement of the parents they didn’t ask for.With a mother suffering from addiction, a community that looked the other way far too many times, and a life of barely keeping food on the table, much less having any real opportunities to succeed, Sadie feels like such an old soul. I don’t know how many readers will struggle to relate to the age of her inner monologue, but from another woman whose circumstances never quite allowed me to feel like a child, I saw so much of myself in the cynical, pragmatic way Sadie views the world around her.It’s hard enough to grow up poor and in a broken family, but Sadie’s also queer—she doesn’t label herself, but explains her sexuality in ways that heavily point to pansexuality—and she stutters, which forms a barricade between her and the rest of the world. Her representation feels so valid and genuine, and it broke my heart every time she mused about how imprisoned she felt by her struggles with speech.More than anything else about Sadie’s character, though, I loved the fierce, maternal determination she has for taking care of Mattie—and, once Mattie is gone, for finding her killer and dishing out justice. Every memory of Mattie, whether told through her view of their adopted grandmother May Beth’s, is beautiful and haunting. The tremendous amount of guilt that Sadie carries as she blames herself for what went wrong had me completely breaking down in passages, and I’ll admit without shame that I read the last several chapters through tears. The most brutal part of it all is that, somehow, it feels like Sadie’s story could be based on a real girl—no, on countless real girls, all over the world.Without spoiling the plot, I want to warn you that this book focuses heavily on child abuse and sexual assault, and it is broken down in the most honest, agonizing ways. There’s also a solid portrayal of how deceptive abusers can be, as the abusers in question are shown to have fooled so many people. But there’s also another side to the representation here, as we see Sadie’s intense solidarity with other abused girls, and her desperate need to protect and defend them, even though (perhaps especially though) she feels that she failed to protect and defend her sister.There’s not much else I can tell you now, because I think it’s the kind of story that you should go into without too many expectations. Just climb in, let Sadie take you for a ride and tell you her story, and try not to let your heart get too broken in the process. This is a phenomenal story, and I know that I will be thinking about it for a long, long time to come.

This is a good book about a difficult topic. Triggers abound in this novel about child abuse and assorted other misdeeds. You have been warned. But, it is an interesting story about 2 young sisters, one dead, one missing and the sad circumstances that lead to their troubled end. The book is narrated by the missing girl and the other narrator is a radio (serial-type) podcaster/broadcaster who takes up the cause of finding out who killed the first sister while trying to locate the missing second sister. It is quite the adventure. I give is 3.5 stars because the narrative was hard to follow at times but in general it was a worthy read.
