For as long as this marvelous book has been in print, I am always appalled to find so many intelligent people ostensibly graced with a post graduate liberal education that have no knowledge of it. It is a comprehensive study of religion, myth, and their origins and how they are all intertwined in every society. Daunting in size, even in the abridged edition, it is singular in that the facts and conclusions are all based either on creditable ancient sources or mostly on direct study of primitive, isolated societies still in existence during Frazier's life. There is a minimum of speculation and a maximum of conclusion based on comparison of identical or very similar cultural beliefs and practices. The effect on literature alone is reason enough to read this book.

Yes, this is the abridged version, but it still is over 15k locations in the study of ancient ritual and magical practices. Different cultures and different locations perhaps, but so often humanity came to the same conclusions. It's really quite amazing. Having now read this, it's a reminder of how much great literature is out there that I had never read. The King of the Wood will definitely stay with me forever.Seriously, if you don't have this get it now.

In The Golden Bough, James George Frazer, an expert social anthropologist, explains the ancient origins of the world's myths, rituals, and religions. He shows the similarities between many cultures' strange superstitions, such as animal and human sacrifice, fertility ritual, community cleansing rituals, and others.He begins with the question of why, at Nemi in prehistoric Greek times, a warrior priest known as the King of the Wood kept his position by fighting for his life, which could be threatened at any time by his successor and murderer. By attempting to explain this ancient tradition, Frazer examines similarities between religious beliefs and shows how the belief in magic and the worship of nature was gradually transformed into the worship of religious kings and gods.Controversially, many elements of Christianity are included, such as Christ's crucifixion and the fact that many Christian holidays coincide with the dates of prehistoric pagan rituals. For the diligent skeptic of Frazer's ideas, I would advise reading the full, multi-volume edition, which includes the archeological evidence for the theories.This book is ESSENTIAL for the studies of mythology, religion, or anthropology.

I am re-reading this book. I had forgotten how easy the author's writing is to read. Although it's a 19th century book, the writing seems more modern. The Kindle version is very handy. If you haven't read it, this is worth reading. The legend the author researched and described is at the root of many traditional stories.

What else can I say except this is a classic - a treasure-trove of beliefs, rituals and traditions of "Magic" and "Religion" (and wherever the twain, and medicine, do meet). This is an all-encompassing reference book invaluable to those who were mesmerized by Greek mythology, entranced by the sylvan and nature beliefs and rituals of both ancient times and aboriginal practices. Certainly not written with any thought of "political correctness" (Frazer lumps most aboriginal humans - both past and Frazer's present day - as "barbarians" or "savages"), the reader must consider when this was written; yet, one will find terminology still used today (remember the movie "Practical Magic").

Product description is for the paperback Oxford University Press edition; this hardback is a 2013 version by Simon and Brown publishers. The binding is cheap plasticized cardboard (the image in the listing is not a dust cover, it is the book itself) and the paper is inferior and likely will turn brown in a few years. The printing covers most of the page from edge to edge with little of the white space that one is used to from quality publishers. As a lover of quality books with over 5000 hardback volumes in my library, I have never come across a piece of trash like this. It is an insult to Fraser and his work.

Although extremely lengthy and at times, dull, it is a must for students of religion, anthropology, and history. Clearly shows man's evolution through myth\magic, religion, and science. Fascinating!

James Frazer's, "The Golden Bough," is a must read for anyone interested in the comparative study of religion, folklore and magic. This abridged version of a multi-volumed master work will open your eyes to the commonality amongst traditional religious beliefs and practices around the world. One warning though: This book may cause an acute existential crisis for Bible heads. If you can't recognize pagan themes and rituals in the old and new testaments -blood sacrifice in particular- then you're better off sticking to bible tract comic books. I also love the cover art of Turner's "Aeneas and the Sibyl."

If Hunter S. Thompson wrote a hunting book, it would be like this. It's like he set out to write a book about turkey hunting but is constantly side tracked by some wacky thought. Turkey hunters are a kind of crazy crowd to begin with so it's not entirely out of pocket, but you'll definitely feel your head spin at times wondering where the heck he's going. I'm really not sure I gained any more insight on bird behavior or tips to hunting turkeys, but it's an entertaining read if you like the ramblings of old nutty hunters.

I've been a turkey hunter for the last 18 of my 55 years. Like Tom I am blessed to live in Alabama where the eastern wild turkey is abundant and the opportunities to hunt him almost unlimited. As with all turkey hunters I know, my spirits always rise at the approach of the spring season in March and remain high until the close of the turkey season on April 30th. I of course spend most of the month of May in withdrawals remedied only by setting a countdown on my calendar marking the days until the opening of the season next year. I'm a turkey hunter. Recently while admiring my collection of hunting and outdoor books a friend and colleague who is without a doubt the best turkey hunter that I have ever personally known ask, " where's the Tenth Legion?" I had no idea what he was talking about and told him so. Amazed, he said, "you know..The Tenth Legion....Tom Kelly....you're kidding me...right? When I told him that I really had never read anything about a tenth Legion that didn't involve Rome or a Roman army he insisted that I read what he then described as "the best...mind you, not among the best, simply, 'The Best' book on the subject of turkey hunting ever written".Now I have. He was wrong only in that Tenth Legion may be "The Best" hunting book of any kind that I have ever read. And then, maybe it's not even a "hunting book" at all. Maybe it's a book about life posing as a hunting book just to get us started turning pages.Thank you Col. Tom for this wonderful work. It's certainly no wonder that it continues to be so popular even after more than 40 years in print. After spending the last two years hunting high pressure territory in Alabama, I can relate. The humor is splendid and sharp. It's almost like going to turkey hunter therapy to know others have the same addiction as you. Mr. Kelly makes you feel accepted into a secret honor society while sharing the exploits only a turkey hunter understands. A must read for the afflicted.

Extremely easy read, this is the real deal. If you're a turkey hunter, this book will have you reading it again and again. Then you'll recommend it to your fellow turkey hunters. What a great read, especially for the die-hard turkey hunter. A beautiful picture is painted that accurately depicts the splendor and emotional rollercoaster of pursuing the wild turkey. It was written 40+ years ago, but reads as though it was published recently. The only downside is that I'm now ready to roll for turkey, but the season is still 10 weeks away. Highly recommended!

I am chronically acquainted with this book and bought it for a friend in north Florida. He very much liked the Tenth Lesion; I have not talked with him about The Boat and may need to read it while I am down visiting him in March. Col Kelly has an excellent gift of a great sense of humor and at the same time, he has gift of making his humor like one is laughing with him and not at him, as well as vice versa.

Very intense and captivating story of the life events of Annahita. I read this book in 2 days (which it very rare for me), I had difficulty putting it down. It made me more aware that my challenges pale in comparison to that of many others. I don't know that I would/could have survived the troubles, terrors and abuse she endured. The power of the Gospel was demonstrated through the gift of a small bible (God's word) and how it effected her life. She was brought out of a very dark, oppressive, sinister religion into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It reawakened in me the importance of sharing the gospel (and scriptures) more fervently; communicating the free gift of salvation found in a relationship with Jesus Christ through whom I have also been saved.

From the get-go this book wrapped its storyline around me and wouldn't let go. From page to page, the suspense and story put my stomach in knots. I kept thinking "When are you going to get out of your situation? I wanted so bad to take Annahita away from her constantly downward spiraling circumstances and lead her to safety." I kept thinking of how to make things right on the natural level and was forgetting that only a supernatural "Force" was able to make things better.When all hope seemed to dissipate into thin air, God was/is there. Annahita wears the scars of a brutal life and gives hope to all of us who think we can't go any farther.This book will keep your attention and will keep you up at night well past your regular bedtime. Read this asap!

As a person blessed to have been born in the privileges of Western society I was drawn to Annahitas story out of gratitude. It seems fitting if we who are Christians claim to know the Truth that we allow Christ to open our minds & hearts to those who find him in darkest evil.

I couldn't put this book down until the end! I really love reading stories about conversions especially from Islam to Christianity, and for some reason have always been fascinated with Iran. Annahita's life and journey are truly miraculous, there is no doubt that God has had His hand upon her, she wouldn't be where she is today otherwise. Reading this book made me cry tears of gratitude for my many blessings and lack of true hardship as well as the freedom to follow Jesus. This book also strengthened my own faith and the belief that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Thank you, Annahita, for sharing your amazing story. God bless.

The author of Bitter Tears has clearly demonstrated that internecine conflicts and revenge for past atrocities during WWII and its aftermath, has not diminished man’s inhumanity to man. We find that Richard, a Wehrmacht deserter of conscience and his Polish girlfriend Katrina, are subjected to enormous dangers, attacks, and threats as they make a heart-breaking journey across Poland and Czechoslovakia in an attempt to reach the American controlled part of Germany.The threats and attacks, sometimes with almost fatal consequences for each of the two protagonists, come from all sources. For Katrina, it’s the Poles and Czechs who consider her a collaborator. For Richard, the Poles and Czechs who are actively seeking any German soldiers to exact their revenge upon, as well Russians who would arrest and enslave him in Siberia.As Katrina and Richard make their way through inhospitable territory their love for one another and tenderness of spirit is a beautiful contrast to the horrors that lay all around them. The author makes these moments shine through in the way Richard yields to the common sense of a woman’s logic when Katrina suggests a method of coping with the different crises they find themselves in. The little teasing and jokes they bring to their relationship even as they suffer immeasurable hardships as they travel onward through the desolate landscape of war-torn Europe provide that glimmer of hope for their eventual salvation.When they do reach the American sector of Germany after crossing the border, they are independently questioned by military personnel. It is here I believe the author has put forward a very credible dialog of interrogation. It puts Richard in a position of coming to terms with who he is. I won’t say more.I was privileged to review a pre-publication copy.

How can love bloom under the horrifying circumstances of the war? Imagine loving one of the Germans who Katrina’s compatriots hate. Can their feelings to each other survive in the atmosphere of mutual suspicion, hunger, and homelessness at the end of the war?Conflict and tension in this beautifully written novel are almost palpable, eliciting such strong emotions I couldn’t stop turning pages. It’s painfully gripping in the details, which are scary to read about forget about imagining two young soulmates living through them. The level of research is utterly convincing, showing us inhumanity from its most terrible side.There is no shying away from exposing atrocities committed by both sides—the just recent oppressors and the now liberated oppressed. But it’s also a tale about inherited goodness in people.I would highly recommend this book to all lovers of war stories and romance.

Richard and Katrina love each other. They together search for a place they belong and can be happy. This takes them many places and puts both their lives in danger many times, but they are always there to help and save each other. Their commitment to each other and determination to stay together against all odds is remarkable. I could almost feel the bike ride, I was sitting here urging them forward...go ..go..go! She helped him when they visited her relatives and he was captured and he helped her when the villagers shaved her head and tried to hang her for collaborating with a German. Their love was unshakable and they were inseparable. I loved the story it was great. If you haven't read this book you need to read it because it is really good.

An amazing World War II book Bitter Tears is part of Marion Kummerow’s War Girl Series. This is a stand alone book.This particular book has a very different story line. It is set at almost the end of the war and continues after the war. At the war’s end, there were many millions of people in Europe. How many exactly was not known.One thing that was known is that they all wanted to return to their homes and families at the same time. This created problems for some of the countries with some closing their borders and not allowing them in. Other countries were not happy either with the influx as there was little shelter or food. Some countries if they had been occupied chose to retaliate against the occupiers countrymen and women if they attempted to enter and inflected cruel and violent acts and even death to some of the people.Marion’s story relates Katrina who is Polish and her boyfriend Richard who is a German Wehrmacht deserter trek across Europe attempting to return to their homes and families. It tells of hardships walking numerous miles, cold and heat, food and water shortages, and many other dangers along the way. Will they arrive home to their families?This is another page turner. Marion’s books always are so interesting and I have trouble putting them down. There will be a few more books remaining in this series. I will be so sorry to see it end.I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Great police "who done it" story. Relevant to right now. Sounds like a case that could be happening in any big city where political gains can and does interfere with police policy, procedures and promotions. This story could be flashed across the 24 hour news stations over and over again. Love the intrigue between brass and your everyday working officers/detectives. Love the twists, turns, ups and downs. You think you know what is really going on, but you really don't know till the very end. Characters you really get to know and so you either love them or you hate them. Best James Patterson and David Ellis book I have read. Be prepared to loose some sleep or work, once you start this book, it is very difficult to put it down.

This was the best book I have read in a long time. I read all of Mr. Patterson's books and love them But this one is amazing. I thought I had it figured out 4 different time but was wrong. Do yourself a favor and read it.

Downloaded it today, read it today. It's just that good. It has everything you need in a great mystery-twists and turns, romance, secrets, intrigue, betrayals at the highest level,not to mention a set of interesting characters.. I have to say, I was sure by 25% into the book, I knew who was behind all of this. But so much happened in the book, I was about to change my mind. In the end I was right but there's a twist at the end that will really blow your mind.This is one of James Patterson's best books. I am just sorry it had to end.I recommend this book to everyone that enjoys a fast paced, interesting book.Mr Patterson and David Ellis make a great duo.

Everyone assumes (correctly) that a missing black book – which may or may not be literally black or a book— was kept by the madam of a deluxe brothel frequented by prominent Chicagoans. It would contain the names of the patrons and of the police who allowed the business to function in exchange for payoffs. You can see why a lot of people want to get their hands on the black book. At least one of them is a killer.The story, which alternates between present and past, begins with the discovery of three shooting victims in the bedroom of a high-priced condo. Two are dead – a woman detective and a woman prosecutor. The third victim barely survives but remembers nothing. He is Detective Billy Harney, our protagonist, the son of a top cop and the twin brother of a woman officer. Forensics points to him as the perp.Not long before, Billy led a raid on that brothel. Among those arrested were the mayor and the archbishop. Will the case be dismissed because Billy did not have a probable-cause warrant?Billy is put on trial for the murder of the two women in the condo plus the madam and a cop. (He had, shall we say, intimate relations with both women killed in the condo.) After a violent encounter, his memory is restored. He is able to testify about what happened in the condo. Not what the reader expects.As a former police-news reporter in Chicago, I enjoyed revisiting the Windy City. Every chapter ends with a bang. But the timeline is tough to believe. Two big trials seem to begin almost immediately after charges are filed. Justice is not that swift in Chicago or anywhere else.The astonishingly prolific James Patterson has more than 160 titles over (or under) his name. Co-author James Ellis, an Illinois judge, has written nine novels. I don’t know who composes the music and who writes the lyrics, but they make a good team. Patterson calls this book “the best work I have done in 20 years.” Maybe it is.

Everyone wants to get a hold of the Madam’s black book, containing a list of clients and more importantly, payouts to a cop running a protection racket.Some suspect Detective Billy Harney of stealing the book. Others suspect his partner Kate. Billy suspects yet another person. Everyone scrambles to find the book no matter the cost. The search for the book culminates in the murder of Kate, and Billy’s assistant state attorney girlfriend, Amy. Billy is shot in the head and narrowly escapes death. He recovers but with a chunk of memory missing, that fortunately returns in time to clear everything up.The story is a real page-turner that had me up far too late into the night. The characters are well written, complex, and interesting with terrific interaction between them. The plot has many twists and I was kept guessing who the culprit was until the very end.Highly recommended.

This is one of the best James Patterson books I have ever read! I honestly couldn't put it down till I finished it!

Oh boy!!! When I first started reading James Patterson's The Black Book, I thought OK, we know where this is going..It was not what I had expected. The characters, mostly police detectives, etc., were exciting enough, the family was one of the Dad being a high-ranking member of the force and his twins, Patti and Billy were officers as well. As the plot thickens other character's emerged, district attorneys, and then there are the political people that got involved in this story. This could be a very good Hitchcock movie, it is suspenseful and you think you know who is doing the killings, but I surely was way off course. This was a book that I could not put down because I had to find out who did all the things that were happening and then I was getting angry because of the treatment of Billy!!! Now, that is all I am going to say. Read this book, James Patterson has done it again!Sheiz

If I wanted to conquer a country and become its prince, the first thing I’d need to know is how to get my own personal military. I didn’t find that information in this book. It seems to have been written for men who already have their own personal militaries. Yet most of the advice is about conquest. If they have their own personal militaries, why wouldn’t they already be experts in conquest?Someone who is already a prince would need to know about what to do after the conquest. He needs to know how to deal with his subjects and how to deal with other rulers without going to war. There should have been an entire chapter on diplomacy and international trade. The alternative to these things is destroying your own principality with perpetual war. Along these lines, after Machiavelli wrote THE PRINCE and before he published it, he wrote a small work entitled “The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca” that illustrated the importance of caution and diplomacy instead of endless conquests. The key was that princes should keep the limitations of their successors in mind when planning military campaigns. After all, princes die young sometimes.Nothing clear is presented about how a prince should deal with his subjects. A prince might need to kill them, but should leave their property and women alone. He should disarm them so they can’t overthrow him. But what if the principality is being invaded and he needs armed subjects to help him fight the invaders? Liberality is the quickest way to be despised by the subjects, but they should be given festivals and spectacles. It’s confusing and I may have missed it, but he provides no historical examples of princes that prevented unrest and those who failed to do so.What’s also confusing is what everyone focuses on when they talk about this book. I'm referring to the morality of the prince. Must he have a moral duty, breaking conventional rules only when they interfere with this duty? Or is it permissible for him to be a beast who only cares about his own pleasure and glory? I’m not sure what this book really says about that.However, THE PRINCE is a valuable early work of political science. The method is pretty good. Ideas are developed from axioms of human nature, then backed up with historical examples. It’s worth reading.2.8 stars

I often heard of this book but never read it and after reading it I am sorry I didn't pick it up sooner. Some people think that the book is cruel and calculating, but I think it is very insightful of how governments take over countries and keep their citizens in line. Some times it means killing the old administration (literally) and other times it means employing citizens in new territories that you are trying to take over. The writing wasn't convoluted at all. It was very clear and well written. This is definitely a book you can read over and over again.

A great thesis worth multiple readings. This collection of essays and letters are one man's fascinating take on politics and war. The only thing which takes away from the overall work are the appendices which try to spoon-feed conclusions as opposed to providing context for the greater work.To be able to read and understand this book correctly, you must be prepared to spend some time understanding the politics and conflicts of the time. That being said, it's the only way to do it and be able to grasp more than surface conclusions. Being able to read and understand the work changed my understanding of not just politics, but also my interactions with different groups both socially and in my work life.

The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile."The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.As a final note, if anyone has recommendations for histories of Italy in this time period, please link me to them in a comment -- after reading this, I want to read more about the era.
